Any D&D thread will bring controversy much like Harry Potter, only fewer people are TALKING about D&D today... My thing with D&D is that it's only bad if your DM is using the out there rules and stuff... Like sacrifice and prostitution... If you are the DM, you can take these things out... I mean, in most Japanese RPG's, sacrifice was removed, and instead you just "find" money on monsters... It should work the same way in D&D... It's a fun, and even Good, thing to play if you have a good DM who plays the game without the weird stuff...

I guess i'm pretty off topic, as this seems to be heading down the "parody" tangent rather than the "D&D" uh, co-tangent(?)...

It appears that I need to clarify my first post...

When I said that the movie was "probably not too far from the truth," I meant that it was accurate in depicting the typical D&D nerd. I consider such people to be quite pathetic in this day and age. With that in mind, it is funny.

Again, I think you are incorrect. The 'typical D&D nerd' (I am unsure if you mean the person who obsesses, or the casual player either way, he or she) does not act in that manner at all, unless under the influence of a body chemitry-altering substance.

Are we talking about the same behaviors? It doesn't take "body chemistry-altering" substances to argue over pointless things, mess around with a game system, be confused about rules, or interrupt a game with the needs of the real world (i.e. the bit about Mountain Dew). The fact is, in any gaming community there will be people who take the game too seriously, to the point that they do not realize that they are acting in an amusing/ridiculous manner.

You also have to be careful, stereotypes are a bad thing to fall in to making, that they most definatly are.

If you're going to talk about stereotypes, it helps if you don't use the stock phrase of an anime character in the process . At any rate, I can make generalizations when I think they are appropriate, and make fun of foolishness and hypocrisy where I find it. I am aware that there are people who do not fit the stereotype, but it is much more fun to focus on those that do. In fact, that is the basis for a great deal of what we call "humor." If all comedy has to be 100% accurate or have a disclaimer, then we are living in a sad, sad world.

I played D&D throughout High School. The parody reminds me of some 8-to-10-year old kids (we called them 'munchkins') who used to play on occasion, much to our chagrin (but it was a cheap form of babysitting for the parents and, hey, we were using their house). They did a lot of silly stuff like that.

For the most part, the older teens were pretty serious, did their research, and had their heads in the game. We didn't have too many debates over "yes I did/no you didn't". More like, "You can't wield a two-handed sword in an eight foot corridor" sort of thing.

I agree, though, that a lot of it depended on the DM. We ran very "clean" games; I once took a trip to New York where I met a DM who was clearly into the dark side of D&D; we played for a few minutes, and I left. Most DMs outside our group, though, were neither evil nor dirty, but played what we called "Monty Haul": lots of treasure, experience points by the billions, and just not a lot of fun in the long run.

I still have to laugh a little over some parents (now that I am one) who get worried over D&D and its effects. Yes, some kids are going to be negatively affected. Gateway to the Occult? Yes, it could, but I learned far more about the occult from TV and my friends than from any D&D game.

I think the parody hits the mark: there's probably too much sensationalism in the hype against D&D and similar games. I'm more worried about the "live action roleplaying" that my daughter might be doing at some guy's party, if you get the drift. I've kept track of a few of the people I used to play with, and they've turned out to be pretty well-adjusted adults. Several of them are Christian.

Oh, and the munchkins? Kept track of one of those. He got his PhD in Physics not too long ago. Yeah, he's a nerd, but that's OK, we need nerds too....

All I have to say is that that struck way too close to home. That reminds me of the many D&D sessions I had over the last year at my friend's house (he was a good DM who, like Bob pointed out, took all of the iffy stuff out). The Mountain Dew bit was correct. The arguing over casting the spell was correct. The "Do I see it? I've got a sword that's +9 against Ogres!" bit was so right because it was what my character probably would have been doing (except the whole getting drunk part o_o). I liked this video a whole lot.

Excuse me, but Kenshin's speech mannerisms are not a stereotype the last I checked, that they most definatly are not. They are ratehr unique to that particular character in that particular show, except to the people who fing it amusing enough to emulate (such as myself.) I never said you can not make generalizations. I said more often than not generalizations are in error (well, might not have said that, but by 'be careful' that is what I tried to imply.) I am aware of what humor is, thank you, I do not need to be talked to as though an ignorant child. Again, I apologize; however, I will not neither retract my original statement, nor accept the claim that the movie's depiction of D&D players is entirely false. I regret having to waste so many words on such a trivial subject, but I will defend my right to be amused by humorous stereotypes.

hmmm.. weird debate kinda, my friend showed me the 8-bit d&d flash a while ago, its pretty hilarious isn't it. I like d&d, granted it can get a bit iffy if the gm gets carried away with the screwed up stuff, but yeah there's too much of a negative view on it by other people,

U should see my recent Paranoia sessions. My players won't kill each other so I'm forced to do it for them!

I play a character in it even tho Im the GM. He's telekinetic and pyrokinetic so I pull pins out of grenades and set hair on fire

We've had an electrocution, a speed of sound crash into wall splat. An incineration, A cargo missile impact, a couple of grenade self-destructs, a plasma cannon misfire and a power armour machine gun malfunction...

and thats just 3 sessions....

Let it be known that the maker of the animation was not the maker of the sketch (for the life of me, I can't figure out why that word looks so wrong...). I think it was done on Saturday Night live or some show similar to that, in a recurring sketch called the "Dead Ale Wives Club" There are more "Dead Ale Wives" things out there, and even at least one more "Dungeons and Dragons" sketch.

Also, this particular sketch has been done in many forms, including in the video game "summoner" as a hidden feature during the credits using summoner characters... (the mountain dew guy was played by a monster, and... I forget about everyone else...) As a side note, the ending to summoner 2 has a similar sort of easter egg... The Elevator thing was really funny...
