Help, please!

Talk about anything in here.

Take heart Jaela. Anime is not evil, it is a tool. There are two indisputable facts about tools. First, they are not inherently good or evil and second, people can use them for both good and evil. It doesn't matter what that tool is - a wrench, a screwdriver, a car, a gun, a book, or anime. All of these things can only reflect the intention of the user. If the user is corrupt, than the result will be corrupt. If the user is pure, so will the tool's results. I truly pity all who can not understand this.

Another thing, anime is a very wide genre. It is a whole culture's form of expression and covers the entire range of emotion and artistic expression. It is not narrow at all.

I invite your pastor to come here and talk to us, especially those who have posted in this thread since we seem willing and able to speak on this issue. I guess I shouldn’t speak for anyone else, but he is welcome to get in touch with me to discuss this rationally. I don’t know what he based his decision on, but it wasn’t based on much, of that I’m sure.

On the down side, I take contracts very seriously, regardless of the reason you entered into it. It is your word and your bond. If you do not wish to live by the contract, you must inform all parties that you are going to break the contract. Doing otherwise is the same as a lie.

Option A: You should ask her what is evil or bad about anime. That'll make them stop their vendetta on anime for a while. If they come up with an answer, locial or not, as us and we'll help you. Lots of CAA-goers will be willing to help. :)
Option B: Better yet, you could sneak into Sam's house, steal and eat the No Anime contract, then curl up in front of the TV and watch Toonami.
Option A is logical, but option B is more fun. ^_^
No-One likes my option Bs. T_T
Option C: Her that condemning anime is just as bad as condemning TV, or music. On second thought, don't do that. You'll give her ideas. o_O
Option D: Get a CD player, a speaker, and sneak into her house like a ninja, then play subliminal messages that say good things about anime. Download and unzip my attachment to hear me sayig "Anime is good," over and over, accelerated to be many many many many times faster its original speed. Now it's just a buzzing noise...

People are so freakin ignorant. I can't stand people like that. Personally, I'd get a new church, especially considering the way your pastor talks. He, and your friend, seem hypocrytical. All Anime isn't bad. I would consider Ai no Kusabi bad, but no Kenshin. It depends on your convictions, as others say...if nothing, watch it when your friend isn't around, so you won't cause them to stumble.

Man, Jae, I'm so sorry. Look, if I were you, I'd ask your friend what about you she likes? Then ask her what about anime changes those things? I mean, it's like if you said, "If you pierce your ears then I won't be your friend". What does that really have to do with your relationship. Afterall, this relationsihp has obciously been existing while you liked anime before this discussion.

Friendship is about loving someone self-lessly regardless of what they are. And if your friend would be willing to throw you away because of anime, then she's not the kind of friend Jesus would be.

Once again I'm really sorry about this. If worse comes to worst, I'd go closet with your anime. So long as you're not watching anything dirty and your friend isn't really open to discussing it with you, I'd just avoid the topic all together. That's what I do with a close friend of mine with whom we disagree on several key issues.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. Anime is evil if it causes you to think/do evil things things, like some music or tv shows. Try explaining this to your friend. No, not all anime is evil though alot should be viewed with caution and discernment. Try explaining to your friend that anime is no different than some Anerican shows (cause it isn't really) and tell her that you won't force her to like or watch anime with you, but you think it's too trivial a subject to be losing a friend over. *sighs* That's a tough situation...and I really don;t know what else more to say except I'll be praying for God to show you the way.

Your friend (and pastor) sound like hypocrits to me (and apparently many other ppl) Anime itself is not bad. There are some animes that are bad. Even watching an anime that contains something bad is not bad unless it causes you to sin.

Hey, Jae! Why don't you suggest that your pastor gets on this board and discusses it with us. I'm sure many of us would be quite upto the task. Same goes for your friend. Refer her here. And in relation to your signing a contract, did a witness or notary watch you sign it? Cause if not it's not gonna be legal.

Hi Jaela. I have to say that your friend Sam sounds very manipulative and controlling. I'm sure she's a nice girl otherwise, but... "making" you sign a contract??! Most mothers don't even do that. And it's totally unacceptable that she would give you an ultimatum -- "anime or me." That's just wrong. Friends don't do that, especially over something so un-essential. And her pastor sure isn't being a good influence on her. I pray that you both find a new church to attend -- and follow Christ, not some overbearing, self-righteous, blind deaf and dumb hypocrite of a preacher.

Christ is the only One you need to follow -- not your friend, and not a pastor who is clearly in error, lacking both reason and compassion.

Think about this.

If your friend and pastor think anime is evil.

Then movies are evil, because they say some bad stuff or show bad stuff in it.

The same goes for everything else. We could say that books are evil because they let us think freely and so on.

Yes, alot of things we are a tool that we use in life. Some take the tool and use it for evil, but that doesn't mean everything that tool is being use for is evil.

just a little note--something the senior pastor at the church I attend talked about: It's not good to follow people. People are imperfect. Rather, follow God. Show people respect, but your final turn should always be to God's Word. Guard your thoughts, keep to Biblical teachings and just smile at other people. You should be alright.

Out of curiosity, are your parents at all involved in this situation? If they're solid Christians, I suggest you ask their advice. Carefully review everything you know to be true about anime.

I hope this does not become lost among other threads...

That's a very tough situation, but I personally wouldn't be friends with someone who judged all of Anime-dom by one thing. Like, for instance, that'd be like saying "life is evil". Sure some things are bad but certainly not all of it. Ask her why she thinks Anime is evil, then talk to her about it. A friend who says that Anime is all evil and is trying to make their friends sign contracts might be jealous, too.

She hates Anime and thinks it's Satan's tool, but likes Harry Potter?!

Aiy, aiy, aiy... *shakes head*

Many children of God run astray following the all-too-eay to fall in trap of fanatiscism. Not all things a person does are justified by God because they believe in him, it only means that they are forgiven if they ask to be. If you find some of the things your pastor says offensive, point things out to him, and if he is truly for God, he will be grateful you mentioned this to him.Wisdom can come from weeds.

That's not right. Not all anime is evil.
Anime is a term classifying a form of art, and has nothing to do with the content.
Yes, there are certain animes that I consider evil, and I struggle with the issue myself, but it isn't right to reject a fellow Christian just because they agree with something you don't!
That's wrong. Jesus said to first examine the plank in your own eye before you rebuke your fellow servant about his/her speck!
I think you should pray about this.
But I think you should weigh your friend and your pastor's words.
If your friend can't love you the way you are, he/she isn't following the most important commandment. Have faith in God, him/her and yourself, and continue to pursue your passion. If God wants them in your life, then they will stay!
I'll pray over you and all those involved.
