1-Final Fantasy II (US) One of the best RPGs ever, definitely the best of its time. LOL, it's what got me into RPGs in that sense, although I had played Dragon Warrior before, FFII was way better. . .

2-Final Fantasy III (US)/VI Yet another of the all-time best. Ending could have been much better though.

3-Chrono Trigger (SNES, I really want to play the Playstation rerelease) Great plot. Cool characters. Even the battle system was good. and the art and music. . .wow. Definitely one of the best.

4-Final Fantasy IX. The plot was cool, (although done before IIRC elsewhere) the artwork was good, the character design and interaction was good. . .all in all, a great game.

5-Final Fantasy VIII. The artwork and the character design was great, although the battle system had its bugs, the music wasn't the absolute best, and the plot had holes big enough to drive a truck through. Nevertheless, it was a good game.

6-Chrono Cross. This game is, artistically, one of the best combinations of anime and game that you can find. The artwork is WONDERFUL. The music is almost as good as the art, and for a game released in 1999 in the US, was great. However, the plot was kind of weak, and there were too many characters, so the kind of character development you'd find in, say, FFVII or even in Chrono Trigger was absent.

7-Harvest Moon: Back To Nature. Yet another good combination of anime and RPG, this is another one of my favorites. There's nothing "spectacular" about it and sometimes it can get rather tedious (why couldn't you save during the "days" rather than only at the beginning of a new day?) Nevertheless, it's worth your time. An added bonus is that it's almost totally inoffensive in content. The only elements that even approach questionable are an annual town religious festival and infrequent opportunities for characters to drink. . .Harvest Moon is one of the few games that I would recommend to almost anybody.

8-EarthBound. This was one of the coolest SNES games ever, in that it was a good RPG in and of itself while being a sometimes laugh-out-loud parody of RPGs, in that it had an inventive setting with lots of cities and secondary characters. . .it was just cool. I wish it would be rereleased and that there would be a sequel.

9-Breath of Fire (SNES, GBA) I liked it, although the plot had been way overdone in other games (basically a defeat the monster and save the girl plot), it was an interesting game due to the subplots and sidequests that tied into the main quest.

10-Final Fantasy VII. The characterization was good, the plot was interesting, the music and art were both great (incredible for 1997 standards, LOL) however, it was also sadly the great experiment to see what Sony/Square could "get away with" with American audiences. Of all the FF games to this point, it had the worst language and some near-yaoi scenes, and it wasn't the best of the series because of this content.

1. Neverwinter Nights (i knew it was going to be good)
2. Chrono Trigger (everyone knows why)
3. FF 3 (this one too, it's good)
4. Super Mario RPG (as a Mario fan, i loved it)
5. Zelda Link to the Past (one of the longest RPGs i played with)
6. Diablo 1 (now this, is revolutionary gaming)
7. Shadowrun (pretty cool :))
8. Harvest Moon (spent countless hours playing this...)
9. Diablo 2 (i spent months playing this)

and last but not least

10. Stonekeep (it's from Interplay. it sucks for everyone else, but it kept me playing it for some time)

Deus Ex is not in the list because it's not really an RPG. but then again, what the heck is it? it's like... unique... it needs its own genre!

1. Deus Ex (I consider it an RPG, more so than Zelda) - PC, finished (Twice through totally)

2. Morrowind - XBox, in progress. This game rocks, GOTY on pre-order.

3. Icewind Dale - PC, twice to last battle (sigh). I've not been able to beat this guy, what's worse, the last driver updates give the game fits.

4. Final Fantasy VII - PC, near end but too weak to finish, have to beef up my characters.

5. Anachronox - PC, Started but since distracted by other things.

6. Fallout 1 - PC, Played for a while (finished first major "quest"). Turn-based system throws me off, have to pick it up later.

7. Fallout 2 - PC, Barely started it. Was a FO1/FO2 combo pack, installed it with a minimum install (never do that)... have to re-install full to play it.

To be added:

1. KOtoR - XBox (gotta finish original Morrowind first).

2. Deus Ex 2: Invisible War - XBox.

3. Fable - XBox (just sounds way too cool!)

4. Baulders Gate series - PC (BG, BG2, ID2)

Final note: Diablo-esque games (Diablo/Diablo2 and BG:DA) not added to the list 'cuz they ain't really RPGs (far less than Deus Ex). They are hack/slash games with RPG elements added to them (not that that is a bad thing).

Chrono Trigger: The best RPG I've ever played. Beautiful music, suspense and great gameplay.

The Legend of Zelda: The original is always best.

Shenmue: This might not exactly be considered an RPG, but I consider it one. The best title released on Dreamcast and one of the best games ever made by Sega. The graphics and the musical score are some of the best I've ever heard in a game.

Super Mario RPG: Great fun! My only beefs is that Luigi should have been a playable chaeacter and the Princess' attacks could have been a little better. Great healer though.

Final Fantasy VIII: Great music. Great graphics. Both Cloud and Sephiroth are little hotties.

Sailor Moon RPG: A Japanese title. Not the best game by RPG standards, but it's Sailor Senshi goodness for SM fans.

Sonic Adventure: Not exactly an RPG, but it has some of the RPG elements. Good fun, but the camera angles get annoying and Amy Rose needs more levels. =P

Hmm, let's see.
1. Final Fantasy 8 (I love Squall! ^^ and I liked the music in this game so much I bought the soundtrack and the fact that this game focuses more on the love story plot then other FFs. lol)
2. Kingdom Hearts (I loooove that game!! It almost beat FF8 out of my no1 game spot. ^^)
3. Zelda: Ocarina of Time (I know it's not exactly an rpg, but Kingdom Hearts itsn't a regular rpg either so oh well, plus I just can't leave Link out. lol)
4. Final Fantasy 9 (I liked the character designs and it had more comedy than the other FF games I've played)
5. Final Fantasy 7 (I thought Vincent was cool looking ^^; The game had waaay too much swearing though, but Millyfan I'm not sure what you mean by near yaoi scenes. There was that like gay gym or whatever, but I don't remember any yaoi scenes.)
6. Chrono Cross (It had great replay value and a great soundtrack.)
7. Suikoden 3 (The different character POVs is cool)
8. Lunar: Eternal Blue (the psx one. I've never played the Saturn one.)
9. Final Fantasy 10
10. Lunar: Silver Star Story

Of course this list is subject to change at any time. :P lol
-BlueElf  (ya gotta love the dancing banana, but I think we need a dancing monkey. Monkies are cool. lol)

10. Tales of Phantasia
9. .hack Saga
8. Seiken Densetsu tied with Final Fantasy 3 (the real one, for Famicom)
7. Seiken Densetsu 2 (AKA Secret of Mana) Tied with Final Fantasy 2 (the real one for Famicom)
6. Chrono Cross
5. Seiken Densetsu 3
4. Chrono Trigger
3. Final Fantasy 8
2. FFX
1. Final Fantasy 6 (AKA 3 SNES US)

Well what do you know! I did it!

I used to have Earthbound on my list, but I just realized how creepy it was the last time I played it... I don't know, I just don't like it anymore...

I just thought I'd tell you that EarthBound is a parody. . .just so you know. The "psychic" and whatnot stuff in it is mostly actually mocking that kind of thing. . .-^.^-

Oh, and to add a sidenote to this, I'd like to give a quote.

"My role? Why do you keep saying that?" Raiden
"Well this is a type of 'Role-Playing-game' after all" Colonol from MGS2:SoL in the best part of the game... despite the naked man butt...

anyhow...

If MGS2 is an RPG, it's my fave...

Yeah, it's like David Letterman the duck, or something.

BTW: I was kinda depressed that this whole thing wasn't things like, "Shadowrun, AD&D, Deadlands, GURPS, TORG, VTM, Cyber Punk, etc"

For me:

1. FF8 (Go figure: 30399)
2. Shogo (Not as much rpg, why it didn't get 1).
3. Ultima Underworld I&II (They aren't diff enough to warrent individule nums)
4. FFX
5. Bards Tale (Much hacking fun...)
6. FF7 (except for quistis. Because of that, I tried to hook cloud up with barret!)
7. Crono Trigger
8. FF1-6 (Had to bundle them all together to get a complete point)
9. Dragon Warrior
10. FF9

Well, since you brought it up I'd say:

1. AD&D
2. Mage
3. Call of Cthulhu
4. Shadowrun
5. Fading Suns
6. Cyberpunk
7. Rifts

I've played others, but not often enough to really rank them anywhere. Except MERP: it sucks.

humans definately :) The "eggs" do nothing after the first few battles, and I would also like to add that Kos-mos is awesome! Folllowed by Chaos and Ziggy. I can't wait for episode 2, have you seen the screens? They are so awesome, 100 times better than FF! (Waiting for myself to be smitten by FF fans :) )

Also, when the "saga" is complete (all 6 or 7 episodes), I'm sure it'll be the best RPG on my list. Though I do have very high hopes for FFXII

My 'eggs' are decent enough to fall back on. Humans are a lot better. (and faster) KOS-MOS rules! I like the Ep. 2 character models a lot more.
My personal favorite is Shion. She's fast, decent physically, and has some great Ethers.

Yeah, thats what my friend said, until it became a "pay" rpg. Supposedly the source codes (or whatever he said, I'm not a comp whiz) are released online so anyone could build their own version of Ragnarok, so right now he is playing a custom version of it.

Somehow I missed this thread...Weird.

Note: I'm far too lazy to put these in order, so if it's number 10, it could still be the coolest one on the list.

1. Ocarina of Time: Awesome game, one of the 64's best. Gameplay was awesome, and I liked the story.

2. Wind Waker: Highly addictive, and not too challenging. Walkthrough not necessary, even for me (which is rare)

3. Harvest Moon 64: I suppose this is an RPG, close enough anyway. This is the only HM I've played, but I really liked it. I was hooked for a couple of months, then beat it and got kinda bored.

4. Earthbound: Super! Great for Super Nintendo, and was hilarious. Gotta love it.

5. Chrono Trigger: Totally cool SNES RPG with rockin' music and character development.

6. Diablo II/Exp: Very awesome game. Has incredible replay value, and overall really well thought out.

7. Super Mario RPG: Another SNES classic. Loved using bowser, he's the coolest. Him and Mario and Peach were my star team. Mallow was crummy, and Geno was decent...

8-10: Dunno...

right now there are at least 9 episodes of Saga

something rather saga 1 (known as FF Legend in US) (I say something rather because it was a japanese name I don't remember)
xyz saga 2 (known as FF Legend 2,)
blabla saga 3 (ditto)
Romancing Saga (not released in US)
RS2
RS3
Saga Frontiers
Saga Frontiers 2
Unlimited Saga

SO, unless I missed one, that's 9 of them.

Bringing up the naming conventions for US released games reminded me... Seiken Densetsu 1 was rereleased, I think it may already be out in the US, but I"m not sure... Thankfully they're dropping the very deceiving "Final Fantasy" title and sticking to their other line of names, "Mana."

I think it's going to be called "Sword of Mana" and it's for GBA. It's a reworking of the old SD (called Final Fantasy Adventure in US for it's first release)

Let's hope that the first six saga games get such a treatment and see stateside releases, but Saga ain't that popular in the US...
