Trouble With .AVI Files

Hi y'all,

I recently downloaded some .AVI files of Chrono Crusade and Peace Maker Kurogane, and I've been having some problems with them. They will start playing alright, but then, my laptop will freeze up, so I have to pull the plug and restart my laptop. If there's anybody here who's had the same or similar kind of problems with .AVI's, and you can assist me in remedying the problem, I would appreciate whatever tips or help you can provide me with. Thanks.

Hmmm, it might be the player, if there's a small flaw in the file. What video program do you use? I have good luck with VideoLAN (although it crashes a lot if you mess with it while it's working) Maybe that will help.

i use divx and divx tends to work well with avi files.

chrono crusade uses some weird codecs in most of the episodes i found.....try downloading a codec pack that will cover all the bases.....

there's also a nice little video player called BS Player (freeware i think).....its played every weird file i've run through it so far.

Regardless of the codec/player your computer shouldn't be crashing like that. What OS are you running? Windows ME, 2000, XP, 98, 95, etc.

(Huh, I just re-read that, and "Windows Etc" could be the next big OS... :lol:

I could still be the player that's causing his computer to shut down. Something similar happened to me. I was trying to watch an anime which will remian unnamed as I didn't legally get it (it was deleted as soon as I was done though). But I tryed watching it in DivX and it locked up my computer and I had to restart in order to watch it again. I'd suggest you get BS Player. It seems to be the best there is.

Hiya guys,

Well, I've downloaded BS Player, and basically, the problem persists. The same goes for DivX. I'm gonna try VideoLAN, and we'll see what happens. The one thing I have been thinking of doing is searching for an AVI to MPEG encoder, cuz MPEGs don't give me trouble. If y'all know of good AVI to MPEG encoders, please let me know. Thanx.

This is sounding more and more like a problem with the media CODEC installed on your machine. Can you tell us what the codec is? If it IS the CODEC, then no ammount of changing players / messaging the files will help, as that's a layer that's closer to the OS. Worst case scenareo, maybe someone can help you track down new files, or decode them on another box.

To further help troubleshoot, what happens just before crashing? And what OS are you running?

I have a few different AVI to MPEG tools, but they are all fairly expensive. Perhaps Quicktime Pro could do it. It's not free, but it's close. I think it's around $40.00 or so.

Actually, it's $30, and it only has a MPEG-1 playback codec, not an encoder. I'm sure Bob would point this out too if he were here, but it doesn't have very good AVI support because .avi is so generic as a format -- there are tonnes of codecs that can be inside an AVI, and not all of them are available as QuickTime plugins (even for the PC, let alone Macs).

that happens to my sisters laptop sometimes when she's playing Halo. The problem is with the hadware. You can't restart it right away because the mobo is trying to protect the comp from heat damage. Try placing a box fan under the laptop, or throttle your cpu down. like underclock it. that should fix it.
