FFVI
Yay! Incredible story, despite the 1 dimensional villain... It wasn't the villain that really mattered, anyhow. It was Celes and Locke and Setzer and Terra and Shadow. Ooh, shadow. Rumors abound. Oh, can't forget Leo...
In second Place, I'd definately say
FF8
YAY! FF8 had a superior battle system... The guardian force thing was great, and required real strategy. Nothing near the strategy required for Chrono Cross, though, and that didn't do all that well... Obviously people don't like hard battles... They like leveling up and mindless random battles until they are strong enough to kill any boss by sneezing at it. (though there was a boss that could beat you by sneezing at you in FF6 and I think maybe 8 too, I forget...
I liked FF7 for its prettyness when it first came out, but I never stayed with it long enough to beat it... I had to watch my friend beat it. FFVIII on the other hand, I stayed with until the end. I loved everything about FFVIII from beginning to end (wait, how many times have I said that line now?)
Side note - I wrote Nintendo Power when FFVII first came out on Playstation, and I asked about the CG demonstration from a few years ago that was rumored to be on N64. I said something about it being FFVI, and they wrote back to me in the condescending way like "No (stupid kid) that was actually characters from FFIII." Hahahahahaha... Stupid nintendo power... They feel the serious need to keep their little numbering inaccuracy going... Sorta sad, really... BTW, the parenthetical portion was my own addition based on the feeling I got from the letter.
