Do YOUR Parents Preview and Restrict Certain Animes?

Ok I went to Barnes&Noble Yesterday and picked out .hack//twilight volume one and both of the Megatokyo Volumes. My mom just happened to turn to the page in .hack with ouka the werewolfess (who is not exactly the most modestly dressed character in .hack ) and automatically said no to me buying it even thought that was the only problem with it. Next she turned to Megatokyo and to the page where Largo says that Erika is racked (she later almost kills him). She still wouldn't let me buy it even though largo gets punished for it later! AAAAAA! I can't take it anymore! Does anyone else have this problem???!?!?!?! OK my rant is over... discuss freeely rants encouraged.

No, my parents aren't real big with restricting anime/manga...my parents think they're just kiddie cartoons...I read Love Hina and Chobits (rated OT) and I recently just bought Negima vol. 1, which was shrinkwrapped and had a "mature 16+" sticker on the front, but they still let me buy it *shrugs* I don't know, but it's either they're ignorant or they think I'm responsible enough to monitor my own material. I doubt it's the latter, though ^_^

I was watching Gundam Wing a few years ago and I think Duo said, 'Dammit' or something. . .and my mom so happened to be in the room. All she said was, 'I hope your father doesn't see this...' XD I thought that was funny...heh.

Lessie...other than that, my parents don't care what kind of manga/anime I buy. . .of course, my parents discourage me from buying anime/manga AT ALL. >.> That's why I always buy as much manga/anime as possible when I'm with my friends (so my parents aren't there to tell me not to buy it...muahaha)

My parents don't really monitor what I watch/read at all, but I keep in mind that I have younger siblings who will (chances are) see what I get into, so in a way, I'm responsible for them too. That's usually restriction enough. ^__^

Anyway, to add, my dad doesn't care what anime I watch, as long as there isn't a lot of cussing...but he won't let me watch real shows like Friends. I'm fine with that, since I don't like that show anyway...>_>

They place 100% trust in my anime viewing. If they do any viewing of anime, its me showing them. Even after knwoing and hearing the name of Hellsing and whats it bout...they had no qualms bout it cause they trust me 100%.

My dad always wants to watch whatever anime I buy, and then he criticizes it. Grr... It's really irritating. I just buy DVD's when I'm out with my friends, and I don't bring attention to them.

My parents don't look at it too much, they usually worry more about the price and whether I'm going to pay for it myself or not. My mom cares more about cussing and magic type things, my dad cares more about ALOT of violence (I'm personally not bothered by violence and blood at all but...). Since none of those things are normally depicted on the cover they don't look into it too far. And they trust me to look into anime before I buy it. In Trigun's case, I looked on the review on this site (its soooo nice to have a Christian take on anime!) and it helped alot. I also didn't watch the dub since it has alot more cussing.

both of my parents has seen Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies. My dad has seen Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal, 3 episodes of Cowboy Bebop, 2 episodes of Rurouni Kenshin. My mom has seen Voices of a Distant Star and episode of Rurouni Kenshin.

They dont mind anime at all, in fact that encourage me to buy it so I can learn from it if I want to aspire to become a anime/manga artist.

Its kinda funny, I will be watching anime and when someone cusses, my mom always seems to be in the room and she will say something like "did I just hear what I thought they said" and then she will laugh.

My parents arent very strict with me, one time they read all the lyrics of a band I was going to go to a concert of, but that's about it. I used to see them as extremely strict, but now I see they are mostly just wise, we still have our disagreements on a couple things, but it's not that bad. Another reason they are not so strict with me could be because they trust me, and know I would not want to buy an anime that they would disaprove of either. I myself disaprove of at least one thing in most anime, sad as it is that people have to make anime like that.I love anime, but dislike most animes, because of the way humans ruin them.

I'm not saying you'll go to hell for buying anime with poorly dressed characters in it, or that you're necessarily doing anything wrong. For some people, certian things affect them, that don't necessarily affect others. Thus God may tell one person to avoid something, and allow another to do it. The reason for this is because he made us, he knows everything about us, and what will do us good or bad. For example, I love linkin park's music, but it has a negative emotional affect on me, so I don't listen to it, while some other believer may be able to listen to it and be just fine. For me, buying anime with such things as you have described would be damaging and hurtful. So I guess the best advice I can give you, Is to talk to God about this, find out what he thinks, that's what really matters.

Also, a parent may be more strict with one child and less strict with another because they know that they can trust one not to buy things they disaprove of, and that they know that the other isnt as strict. Not saying this is the case, but it should be considered.

One last thing. I know it seems ridiculous at times, I know the feeling, but God does urge us to honor our father and mother's wishes. This doesnt really mean that your parents are right, or that you are wrong, all I know is what the bible tells me.

My parents are pretty lenient, but...I know this might sound bad, but I don't offer any iformation, and they don't ask. But, they're lenient with it anyway. They trust me enough to let me choose. If you've seen Fruits Basket, you know Kyo's vocabulary is less than desirable. ^_^ When they heard that, they gave me a "look", but they brushed it off. My dad even watches Yu Yu Hakusho with me every once in while.

That's how I am. Do my parents monitor anything I watch? Nope. I'm almost 18, and they let me pretty much handle myself when it comes to just about everything. They have expressed their dislike of the more than necessary amounts of cussing before, but that's about it. But like you, Aka-chan, I look out for my younger sibs too.

i just tell her that japan has crappy anime just as we have crappy cartoons (fimaly, simpsons, ect.) ( Furikuri, ect.)

and reallly, i just dont make a big deal about it. just kinda keep it real. THey're cartoons, a waste of time. any tv is a waste of time. Idleness is bad. there's alwas something better to do.(reading) Of course if you got like home from 12 hours of work, thats different.

I'm happy to say that my parents think that I'm old enough to handle myself, more or less (which I should be, really, now that I think about it). Still though, if there's a "surprise" scene that I certainly wasn't expecting, I just minimize the volume. ^^;; Sometimes I do feel rather apprehensive when I watch GTO with my younger brother. On the other hand, maybe they just think that there's nothing too harmful in anime/manga, although they're quite aware of the violence.

I was just watching Yakuma Tatsu earlier on TV and my dad passed by and glanced at the TV and asked if I was reading the subtitles or could I actually understand what was going on without it. That was flattering.

[SPOILER]Megumi and Kaoru started fighting about who could pour sake better, all poor Kenshin wanted was a small drink but it turned into a big fight. Kaoru got irritated and drank a ton of sake to rebel against Megumi and Kenshin, then she got drunk, got the hiccups, and was yelling and being hysterical, then she broke down into tears--Kenshin was just sweating the whole time: "You shouldn't drink so much, Miss Kaoru, that you shouldn't!" My parents trust me alot because they know from the past that I'm not the type of person that would read or watch something bad by choice. Also, whenever I'm watching an anime and they come into the room I ask them if they wanna watch it with me. So I guess they figure that there's nothing bad in it that I have to hide from them, lol. And my dad often makes fun of the skimpy outfits. XD

And my personal advice, for those of you that suffer from anti-anime and manga parents, point out good thing about them and tell your mom and dad characters dressing inappriately and stuff like that DOES make you uncomfortable, but its worth it for the story and other aspects. That's... what I would do...

my mom is very strict about the anime i watch but my dad doesnt really mind except for the neon genesis movie since it had a lot of violence, bad content (sorry bout that last one) and the gore. My mom dislikes almost all anime especially dbz and yugioh . Ofcourse some anime is really bad in the first place so you want to be careful. and it is very hard to find true christian anime/manga

Actually, I am the biggest anime fan in the house, therefore I do the restricting. I view everthing before I show it to the kiddos and if there are some parts that are not appropriate, I edit them out so that the show is watchable. How do I gauge this? I know what my wife will and will not approve of their seeing and go by that. If it don't pass momma's white glove test of cleanliness, it don't get into the house.

The question is for me, "Do your parents ever not check your manga/anime?" I don't get a lot of anime but I was paranoid for a week after getting a Dragonball DVD. To give you a example of my mother's tolerance level for things in anime, she is against me watching dubbed Dragonball Z. Dubbed.
We have Comcast and On Demand has some Anime Network stuff. She won't let me watch the TVPG stuff. The only thing I can watch is Angelic Layer. I would have a heart attack if she let me watch anything TV14.
Until recently she checked all of my Teen rated manga before I got it and God knows when she'll let me get Older Teen stuff. I'm just thankful I'm allowed to get Trigun...
I can't watch Adult Swim, I've only ever seen FLCL and 1 1/2 episodes of Inuyasha. I feel squished. In 8 1/2 months I'll be 13. What will I do then? I've never seen an R rated movie or played an M game. My friends are amazed at how little I've seen, even people at my church. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggg............

You know, that's not such a bad thing really. Paul wrote to Timothy to be proud of his youth and his innocence. You wanna know something? I didn't see my first rated R movie til late in my 16th year. I'm almost 18 now and I still don't get a lot of dirty jokes people my age do. My parents were very protective of what I watched for a long time as well. And you know what? That's not a bad thing. This world is a dirty, fallen place; don't be so quick to rush into it. People will see your innocence and your purity, and it will mark you as different in their eyes. A difference that usually leads them looking to Christ. So don't stress over the fact you've never seen this or don't know what this is.

And if you're parents ARE monitoring what you watch, you've got to understand where our parents are coming from too. They are looking out for your best interests because God charged them with your care and upbringing. I'm sure that most parents, when you prove yourself trustworthy, will let you make your own decisions about what you watch. Just be patient, obidient, and respectful til then.

Considering I'm 22...no my mom doesn't tell me anything. But I make it a point to watch no anime that is filfthy or just gross for no apparent mature reason.

I'm glad to hear some of you kids are still being kids and are not rushing into alot of what this obscene world has to offer--that seems to be the biggest problem with children in the outside world.

Well, I'm sorry if I'm gonna sound all mean or something ShinoBinoKage, but if I were your mom I think I would have done the same thing. How old are you? I mean, if you're twenty years old, I can understand you being a little upset if your mom is still telling you what you may and may not buy-- but if you're still a teenagers, then your mom is only doing what God made her to do. There are alot of mangas I don't let myself read.

My parents don't moderate my manga. I do. I've set age limits and content limits (such as: if two characters have sex. If a gay relationship is pushed on us as some sorta noble thing, or a Gay relationship is explored. There are many other qualifications.)

Your mom is doing the right thing in being concerned with what your buying. I know right now it just seems annoying, but there's alot of manga you don't want to read and your mom may be one of the barriers keeping it away from you right now.

Now if you REALLY think your mom has misjudged a title when she flipped through it, why don't you ask her to read the whole thing. If she will, you should let her and ask her to rethink her decision. If she won't, you'll just have to put up with it And if you would be embarrassed to ask her, I think that is answer enough.

In the end, there's still oodles of other manga.
