Story or Gameplay?

Postby Lunis » Fri Jun 11, 2004 6:31 pm

Which do you like more in a game. Do you play it more for the story or for the gameplay?

I play my games mostly for the story. Going a little off topic now, I'll talk a little about Zelda: Majora's Mask. I've just recently gotten into Majora's Mask and am currently in the Zora dungeon.
:( It was so sad to see that scene where Mikau, one of the Indigo-gos, dies. He's my favorite character in MM. It feels both good and bad as I walk around preternding to be him. It feels good because his life is awesome and I love being a Zora. It feels bad because I have to be him, since he's not around *cry* :sniffle: . I also feel kind of rotten for being an imposter and not telling them how he heroically died trying to save Lulu's eggs. *more crying* :sniffle: It's so sad! He went directly into the pirates' fortress when no one else had the nerve to! Then when you find him and put him on shore, you think he's going to live. BUT THEN HE DIES!! :waah!: . I'm so sad.

And another thing. Why in his diary did he say his lucky color was green? I can't figure it out.
Oh my gosh that was so off topic. Well it's vote time everyone!

Where's the both option? In my opinion a good story needs good game play or else your just watching a bunch of cut scences, and games that don't have a storyline tend to be repeatitive.

Well, if there is no gameplay, a game wouldn't be a game. But for me, story is everything.
In a world shrouded in mystery, the winds of change begin to blow.

Sorry, I thought about putting both, because every game needs both, but I kind of wanted a "this or that" opinion. You can specify by saying you like both in your post, if you all want.

I like story...usually the motivation I have when I go through a dungeon or something like that is to get to the next plot point. Gameplay is fun, but even if it's got the best game engine in the world if it's a trash story, then there's no purpose in playing it. That's why I like Majora's Mask so much...there's a lot of character backstory to discover. The classic "aliens abducting cows" story was nicely inserted in there too...:)

Definately both... I mean, if the gameplay sucks, it has a negative effect on the story and can affect other aspects of the game as well...

Besides that, not all games need stories... I mean, take Trogdor. Great game, no story. Then there's Intelligence Qube... Awesome game! What's the story? "You're trapped in this world where cubes of different colors try to crush you..." Hmm...

I DO need my story games, though. I tend to like those more than the non-story games. Silent Hill series, Metal Gear Series, Final Fantasy 6... They all had solid stories. Some complain about the balancing between the cinema and the gameplay, though. I just like being a part of the story, however small, so this isn't an issue. I go into the game expecting exactly what I get: Either it's something like "Jak and Daxter" or it's an interactive movie... Neither one disappoints me. I like movies, I like the interactivity issue. Metal Gear Solid 2 is great, and I'm sure I'd like Xenosaga as well, given that it's not absolutely blasphemous like some say it is (I haven't actually played it...)

In any case, there's room for a lot of variety in the gaming world if people would just embrace it.

I like story better! I think the story adds more to the game and makes the game in general better! It also gets you more into the game and makes it more enjoyable! ^_^
