Apple Special Event: September 2012

A lot of people had mixed feelings about what was revealed at this event. There was the iPhone 5, updates to iTunes, and new iPods revealed. So that people don't have to watch the entire keynote or go through Apple's website page by page I'm going to break down the keynote and list item per item what was revealed an all of their features.

Item 1 - Apple Retail Stores:
381 stores in 12 countries
83 Million visitors between April-June 2012

Item 2 - Mac:
Mountain Lion - 7 million copies downloaded so far
#1 in US market share for notebooks for last 3 months
27% of market share in July alone
15% year-over-year growth
Has been outpacing PC growth for 6 years

Item 3 - iPad:
17 millions sold April-June 2012
More iPads sold than any PC maker sold of their entire product line
Total of 84 million iPads sold through June
April-June 2011 iPad had 62% market share
April-June 2012 iPad has 68% market share
iPad has 91% of tablet web traffic share
94% of Fortune 500 companies are testing and deploying iPad and iPad specific apps for their business

Item 4 - App Store:
700,000 apps in the store
250,000 iPad apps
90% of all apps downloaded every month
Average customer has over 100 apps downloaded
400 million iOS devices sold through June 2012

Item 5 - iPhone:
Made of glass and aluminum
7.6mm thick, weighs 112 grams
4" Retina display, 326ppi, 1136x640 resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio
Stock apps, iWork, and iLife apps have been reworked to match the display. Older apps designed for iPhone 4/4S will be letterboxed
Some developers had early access to the display, these apps have been radically redesigned (examples given in keynote were CNN and OpenTable)
Display has 44% more color saturation, is now full SRGB color specification
Touch sensor is now integrated into the display panel
Supports GPRS, EDGS, EV-DO, HSPA, HSPA+, DC-HSDPA, and LTE
Single baseband chip for voice & data, single radio, dynamic antenna evolved from iPhone 4/4S model.
Launch LTE carriers - USA: AT&T, Verizon, Sprint. Canada: Rogers, Bell, Telus, Virgin, Fido, Koodo. Asia: SK Telecom, SoftBank, KT, KDDI, SmarTone, M1, SingTel. Australia: Telstra, Optus, Virgin. Europe: Deutsche Telekom, Everything Everywhere.
Launch DC-HSDPA carriers: Europe: TeliaSonera, Elisa, Tele2, DNA, Telenor, Everything Everywhere, TDC, O2, Deutsche Telekom, Telekom Austria Group, Sunrise, Swisscom, Vodafone, SFR, TMN, Telefonica, Orange, Bouygues, TIM.
802.11a/b/g/n, supports 802.11n 2.4GHz and 5GHz (dual channel 5GHz), up to 150 Mbps
A6 SOC, 2x faster CPU, 2x faster GPU, 22% smaller than A5 SOC.
Demo of Real Racing 3 showing dynamic track and car reflections. Game Center now supports time shifted multi-player in some games. Allows you to play some interactive games one day, and let someone else compete and interact with your saved play later (and your save isn't just a ghost)
Battery life: 3G talk time 8 hours, 3G browsing 8 hours, LTE browsing 8 hours, WiFi browsing 10 hours, video playback 10 hours, music play back 40 hours, standby time 225 hours.
iSight is still 8 megapixel sensor, 3264x2448, backside illuminated, hybrid IR filter, five-element lens, f/2.4 aperture, 25% smaller than iPhone 4S. Now has dynamic low light mode that can provide up to 2 f-stops greater in low light, precision lens alignment, and a sapphire crystal lens cover.
A6 chip now as a new image signal processor with spacial noise reduction, a smart filter that can determine what the SNR needs to work on. Allows for 40% photo capture.
Camera now allows for panorama photos. Allows for a 28 megapixel image.
Video recording is 1080p, has improved video stabilization, now supports face detection for up to 10 faces, and photos can be taken while recording.
FaceTime camera is now 720p, backside illuminated, has face detection, and FaceTime over cellular.
Audio system now has 3 microphones for noise reduction and beam forming. Speaker design now has a five magnet transducer.
Noise-canceling earpiece design to help reduce noise you're hearing in your area, so it's easier to hear what others are saying.
Wideband audio on supported carriers.
New dock connector: iPhone has used the 30-pin connector since it's launch in 2007, the connector has been around since 2003. New connector is called Lightening. All-digital 8-pin/signal design. Adaptive interface. More durable. Reversible design (can be plugged in either direction). 80% smaller than the 30-pin dock connector. Existing dock connector adapters are available for $30.
Available in Black and Slate (anodized aluminum) or White and Raw Aluminum.
Available in 16GB ($199*), 32GB ($299*), or 64GB ($399*).
iPhone 4S is now available in 16GB for $99*, iPhone 4 available in 8GB for free*.
Pre-order starts Friday September 14th. Ships September 21st.
By the end of the year, iPhone 5 will be available in 100 countries on 240 carriers.

*Prices are available only to qualifying customers in the United States on a 2 year contract.

Item 6 - iOS 6:
Maps: Turn-by-Turn directions, over 100,000,000 points of interest built in with Yelp added to many of them. Satellite imagery with "flyover" 3D available for many cities around the world.
Notification Center can now send Tweets or post to Facebook
Safari now has a fullscreen mode in landscape along with iCloud tabs.
Mail - New VIP inbox. Allows you to mark contacts as a VIP and all of their emails are collected into a dynamic VIP mailbox.
Passbook - New app that collects movie tickets, airline boarding passes, store cards, concert and sporting event tickets, and many other things.
Shared Photo Streams - Allows you to share images on your devices with other iPhone users. You and others can comment and like photos in streams that you or others have subscribed to.
Siri - Siri has learned about sports, apps can also be launched from Siri. You can ask for movie ratings, help you make restaurant reservations, and post updates to Facebook directly from Siri.
Many other updates and refinements have been made to the device that weren't even talked about.
iOS 6 will be available to iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, The new iPad, iPad 2, and iPod Touch (4th generation) on September 19th.

Item 7 - iTunes:
26 million songs available, 20 billion downloads since launch, available in 63 countries, 435 million iTunes accounts, 66% of downloads come from iOS devices.

iOS stores (iTunes, App Store, iBook Store) have been redesigned, improved performance, can now preview while browsing, improved search results.
Available September 19th with iOS 6.
200 million iTunes in the Cloud users

Desktop iTunes has new edge to edge design, clicking on album artwork provides themed experience with colors and artwork integrated.
Albums have feature called "In the Store" that takes you to recommendations and additional songs and albums by the artist.
Artists can now share photos with you right in your library.
Adding new songs to playlists now allow you to see the content of your library and the content of your playlist at the same time.
If you start to drag one of your albums a list of your playlists appears on the right-hand side of iTunes.
New feature called Up Next, you can select a song, tell it to "play next" and it will queue it up to play it after your current song, no matter what you're currently listening to.
New mini-player allows for hover controls, searching, up next access, displays artwork.
iCloud now allows you to play movies and tv shows directly from the cloud on your Mac or PC.
iTunes Store looks like the new iOS iTunes store.
Available in late October.

Item 8 - iPod:
350 million iPods sold since first launched

Volume rocker with play/pause in the middle that can double as a forward/back button that won't activate display.
2.5" multi-touch display with a home button.
7 different colors. Aluminum, black, purple, green, blue, yellow, and red.

Nike+ support. Has pedometer built in.
Bluetooth built in.
Lightening connector.
30 hours of music playback.
16GB for $149

iPod Touch (5th generation):
6.1mm thin & 88 grams
Anodized aluminum backing
Same 4" retina display as the iPhone 5
A5 SOC now in the iPod Touch. Graphics are now up to 7 times faster than the iPod Touch 4th generation.
Battery life, 40 hours of music, 8 hours of video.
iSight camera is now 5 megapixel sensor, backside illumination, hybrid ir filter, five-element lens, f/2.4 aperture, autofocus, LED flash, sapphire crystal lens cover. Panorama feature is available.
Has a loop spot and wrist strap included with the device.
Video record is now 1080p with face detection and stabilization.
FaceTime is now 720p, backside illumination, and has face detection.
Bluetooth 4.0 with LE, 802.11a/b/g/n, 802.11n is 2.4GHz and dual-channel 5GHz up to 150 Mbps.
Airplay mirroring is now available to iPod Touch.
Siri will be available.
5 available colors. Aluminum, Black, Blue, Yellow, and Red (wrist straps are color coordinated).
iPod Touch 4th gen will be sticking around with a memory bump, 16GB for $199 or 32GB for $249
iPod Touch 5 gen 32GB for $299 or 64GB for $399
Available in October

iPod Shuffle:
Colors updated to match iPod nano and iPod Touch
2GB for $49

Item 9 - EarPods:
600 million sets of Apple headphones have been shipped.
3 years in design
Developed to channel audio acoustics more naturally into the ear. Has air flow port in top for mids and highs and port in bottom of stem for bass.
Included with the iPhone 5, iPod Touch 5th generation, and iPod nano 7th generation.

What is it with me always getting a new iPod the year right before the new iPod releases? xD;

Nice to see the iPod Touch gen 4 is still getting iOS6, though.
