Truly, Macross Zero is the worst mecha anime I have laid eyes on. Shoji Kawamori at his most unrestrained and face-palm-inducing. Sometimes I cry in a corner when I think that this greatest of franchises bears the indignity of this show's existence.

...aaaaaaand I just threw up in my coffee.

Tsuritama, ep. 12 (finale!).
Also, Mononoke, ep. 1.

(Thoughts on both in their dedicated threads! :))
Saved by grace.

Finished Fate/Zero and Sakamichi no Apollon. Both were very good shows. I'm glad I got the opportunity to watch them.

Whoo! It's been a while, so I should post here before you all may never discover my opinion on the things I've recently watched!

.hack//Quantum is basically what Doc said.

I also checked out all six Break Blade movies, which are okay. They started pretty rough, and while they never really capitalized on any of the potential of the premise, the action was getting pretty good, but then the characters all began to make maddening decisions and I was only watching for the action and fantasy trappings. Could be great, but certainly miss-able.

Angel Beats was a weird experience. Aside from having to put up with a terrible dub, I actually was enjoying it even though something in the back of my head was telling me something was wrong. It wasn't until the show ended that I realized what a mess it was. It tried to be everything and ended nothing, and the characters don't make the slightest impact, and it keeps shifting focus from what it's trying to do but none of it really sticks at all. I kind of liked the girl that looks like Haruhi though, surprisingly, except for when she's like SUDDEN DRAMA, but that aside she was a pretty interesting character. I also liked the idea of absurd violence because they're immortal, though the dub killed any of the real comedy. It's a mess but you could enjoy it for the pretty visuals? Still a pretty bad show in the end, kind of like this paragraph.

Toradora, on the other hand, was surprising in every aspect. I went in expecting to like it because of the staff, who are responsible for two recent shows that I really enjoyed, namely Ano Hana and Ano Natsu, but I also expected to be rolling my eyes at some dumb stuff and being annoyed at the eventual romance between Ryuuji and Taiga because I was 100% sure I would hate Taiga. Well, the first five or so episodes were exactly what I expected, before kicking it into high gear and really showing off that this director, Nagai Tatsuyuki, has got this drama schtick down. When he wants things to get heavy, they actually can get very intense, and I'd say Toradora pulls this off with more regularity than either of the Ano shows. It's also fairly surprising in that it will take an established cliche of high school shows and do a surprising twist on it. I was rolling my eyes when I saw a cultural festival was coming up, but then it not only had their class do an awesome pro wrestling show, it managed it inject some very good drama into the event.

Each of the five cast members does an amazing job of breaking out of any stereotype you may have assigned to them based on their introduction. Ryuuji is our lead who eventually has three women pining after him, but rather than them falling for him because he's a good insert for the viewer to impress themselves on, Ryuuji shows a lot of spine, caring, and intelligence. He also has some fairly feminine traits, such as his handiwork at cooking and his love of cleaning, which was a fairly interesting move. Ami is similarly a really fantastic character. She's introduced as a fairly ditzy and moe~ girl with an annoyingly high pitched voice, but it's quickly revealed that she does this as a front to hide her inside, which is vicious. She however, also quickly turns into a bro, and her antagonism of Taiga is also really great to watch. Taiga herself is a huge surprise, starting off as a fairly typical tsundere but showing a lot of growth and eventually changing from the girl who really just lacks self-confidence into a person who genuinely cares about her friends.

Anyways, really great show with fantastic direction that easily tops it's successors, recommended to anyone who is willing to gamble on a high school drama even if it isn't the kind of thing they would go for. The ending is also pretty surprising, and I don't think I liked it a whole lot but it's definitely a gutsy move. I recommend this wholeheartedly.

I'm really surprised that the main character didn't stick out to you. Sure, most of the secondaries were pretty paint-by-numbers-y and the ones that got some exposition and growth were done episodically and then removed. But I did think that the main was quite amazing. I dunno... his life story touched me and the way his character grew up through the series until he regains his full memory and we find out that he basically had grown up in the same way before he lost his memory seemed clever and realistic to me. He's also, a really swell dude.

Flanders no Inu (1997)

Talk about leaving an impact: this anime created a huge crater in my gut (metaphorically), first from making me immediately imagine it as some grotesque anime adaptation of The Simpsons and then later revealing itself to me as a sweet and poignant story about a little boy and his faithful dog striving to evade the slings and arrows of a cruel existence. In Belgium of all places, no less. This movie is what you would get if William Blake made an anime. It is a story of poverty and injustice that is nevertheless steeped in nostalgia and spiritualism with a promise that, although this world is a harsh and wanton place there is some form of fairness awaiting in the sweet hereafter for those doing good to others in this hell that we call "life". And overall the film walks a fine line between being genuine and saccharine, but manages to come off as sincere thanks to its slow but assertive pace as well as some rather gorgeous aesthetics: the backgrounds especially are depicted in this lush watercolor scheme that is pastoral and idyllic (and symbolically reflective of the young protagonist's aspirations of becoming a painter) yet ironic given the even darker turns the story takes, the even darker swervings it seems destined to take in order to fulfill its promise of irony, an irony that is as dependent on its running time as its increasingly darker swervings, that is a fact. I feel grateful for its very existence.

Watched Gosick over the course of two days. A decent anime, it had me interested enough to marathon it, which means it was enjoyable at the least. The plot, while it does get more linear at the end, also falls apart, to the point where all I got was that there was going to be a war, and Victorique's father is involved and a bad guy, and KujoxVictorique drama stuff. I can tell they crammed in those last volumes, and it definitely did not turn out as smooth as other anime that had to cut out information, like Sakamichi no Apollon.
Well, at least it's not terribly important to know every last detail of the plot. I still got the gist of it and the ending was nice.
Also, I could swear the OP was familiar the first time I heard it. Thanks to TVTropes I now know that it does in fact sound like another anime OP. Gurren Lagann's. I still like both OP's, though.

Kanon (2006) Ep. 1-2: AYU IS THE SAME AGE AS YUUICHI?! Whuuuut.
The OP for this is boring as heck.
And the girls all look like bugs. I'm getting used to it, but it's still a bit...urgh. So. Much. Moe. At least Clannad had vaguely more realistic proportions in terms of eyes.

And I'm up to episode 37 of Tsubasa Chronicle, and watched the OVA Princess of the Birdcage Kingdom

Last Night, my nephew stayed the night and he wanted me to be with him, he came with Studio Ghibi's Ponyo movie...can someone please inform me as to why so many people hate this movie so much? I was smiling the entire time like an idiot when I watched the movie with my nephew.

I don't hate the movie, I just find it boring. It didn't have much conflict, even with the huge storm and the dad being gone and everything. I just sort of felt like...no matter what happened, it would all be happy and good and wonderful, so there was no interest because there was no danger of it not being happy and good and wonderful. Beautiful animation, though.

Anyway, I watched Monster episodes 64-68. Coming up to the climax!

Tsubasa Chronicle episodes 38-41. I loved seeing Kurogane's backstory again (though I'm glad I followed my friend's advice and watched it in Japanese, because the way they pronounce Haganemaru in the dub was almost enough to make my very long hair stand on end), and the interactions between the group seemed especially fun in episode 41.

Up to date for Hyouka episode 11.5 and 12.

Still giving this a 9 1/2.

Why such a high rating? Because this show isn't supposed to be a 'mystery' show, the mysteries are like a light side dish to the main part of the show, which is slice of life and the characters.

Moyashimon is quite awesome I have to say, I am watching it for the second season and expected it to be mostly to be about microbes but it turned out to be a rather nice college campus life series. (I came for cute microbes doing cute things, but instead I stayed for a rose colored campus life)

I agree...I am of the mindset that one can enjoy Utena without analyzing it to death and instead just watch and enjoy the many sword-fights, cars, upside-down castles, and of course surfing elephants that this show has to offer. Really, you don't need to watch this show with a certain mind-set, just sit back and watch the elephants.

What I have seen:

The Story of Apfelland.

This is something quite interesting: a children's movie created by the guy who wrote the LOGH light novels and directed by a guy who has directed a whole lot of Pokemon entries and Windaria (Back when kid's movies were grim, dark and depressing and told the truth that life sucks and you are going to die no matter what and no one will remember you after you die). It's a pretty typical kiddie action-adventure set in a fictional Central European country at the beginning of the 20th century. A young street urchin finds a kidnapped princess and uncovers a political conspiracy, and multiple chase scenes and a budding romance ensue. It's not a badly written film, aside from the bizarre concept of dynamite sticks behaving like raw nitroglycerine.

Recently finished:

Tsuritama:
Great show, funny, good ending.
Clean, I highly recommend it.
(Duck!)

Bodacious Space Pirates:
Okay show, light sci-fi.
Mostly clean.

Jourmundgand:
Okay action show with a bunch of gratuitous bobbling, I'm surprised that Adult Swim hasn't bought it up yet.
Not clean.

Fate/Zero:
Good show, lots of shiny, I'm pretty sure I missed out on some of the subtleties of the plot.
Not. Clean.

And now I'm back to watching the second half of Tiger & Bunny.

Code Geass - 1-13
So many thoughts. Can't remember them all. Great show. I must rewatch it once I'm done.

And for episode 13 specifically: NEW OP Y U NO SOUND GUD? Seriously, the song sounds like a cat in pain, and 70% of the visuals are just copy pasted from the first OP. I loved the first OP, but this is...painful.

Utakoi 1 - Not my thing. I thought it would be cool to learn a little more behind the poems (Due solely to Chihayafuru. :3), but this was tedious to watch. And they did the Chihaya Furu card in the first episode, so I'm good for now. Officially dropped.

Kanon 9-12 - ...I have a soft spot for ballroom dancing. :3
