I finally finished Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

LOGH took me about 5 months to watch, and I don't regret spending one minute of it. The story, the narrative, the characters, everything about this anime is superb.
Also, I watched the OVAs. Golden Wings is NOT LOGH.

Once again, it's been awhile.

I finished Nichijo. It was magnificently hilarious, I intend to save my links in case I need a pick-me-up during the upcoming semesters.

I am keeping pace with Tsuritama and Jormungand. Tsuriama is great, crazy stuff going on, lovely animation, good fun; no content thus far either, so I'll probably wind up recommending it to people at some point. Jormungand is a good action show, the sort of thing that would be a good fit for the next season of Toonami.

I watched a bit of Brodacious Space Pirates #11-12, end of the 'lost golden colony ship' arc, reminded me why I like this show. Some good scifi.

Just purchased and watched The Secret World of Arrietty. After being totally let down by Ponyo, I really, really, really enjoyed this film - perhaps Miyazaki has his successor?

Saw the new Berserk Movie:

It's not very good, it's not even good. It's mediocre at best. A clipshow of the Golden Age with nice 2D animation that's ruined by awful CGI. [They moved like they where made out of plastic.] The story is rushed, leaves out important development for characters, and leaves out some characters entirely, changing other existing characters. It's less faithful to the manga than the old anime even. [As much as I like the Berserk anime series, it simply does not compare to its manga.] Leaving out Guts' childhood outside of a confusing, but cool looking, flashback takes away almost [spoiler]all of the emotional impact of killing Adonis.[/spoiler] The movie feels like it couldn't decide between pleasing longtime fans of the series or trying to rope in newcomers, so it sits somewhere in-between in a bad way.

I noticed that too, though I watched it subbed. The friend with whom I saw it said that some of the english dialogue seemed to have been altered to more closely match the older live action film, which she recently had watched.

Mobile Police Patlabor

The original show that kicked off one of the best, most underrated mecha franchises around, the MPP OAV delivers the goods each and every episode. For those who don't know, Patlabor is one of the realest of the real robot subgenre of mecha anime. The robots (labors) are functional rather than flashy, aren't equipped with any fantastic powers, and are decidedly not the focus of the show.

This OAV captures both sides of the Patlabor coin. The comedy is executed wonderfully and the characters have personality to spare. People, including the man himself, forget that Mamoru Oshii is a terrific comedy writer, and the fun and funny side of Patlabor continued on into the television series (though it isn't executed quite as awesomely or hit as consistently as it is/does in the OAV). Oshii is also good as being what we've come to know and love as stereotypical Oshii: effin' serious, guys. Episodes 5 and 6 comprise a two-part politically-charged arc that showcases the dramatic and intriguing dimensions of the franchise that are further explored in the films. The characters are fantastic enough when things are light and mundane, but some of them display quite a bit of depth when they are faced with difficult circumstances.

Shows like Trigun catch a lot of flak for vacillating between the comedic and dramatic, but Patlbor has an effective versatility with these moods that has kept it from being guilty of that criticism (and rightfully so, for it juggles laughs and gasps very well).

Armitage III

Speaking of Oshii stuff, the year that his Ghost in the Shell movie came out (1995) was also the same year that this OAV, Armitage III, was released. It's kind of fitting because they are made for the same audience, really: cyberpunk fans. You've got your androids and questions surrounding the extent of their humanness (along with the de-humanization of non-robotic people); you've got your cover-ups and conspiracies; you've got your future in which everyone has more convenience b/c of technology but no one is really happy; the cities look like Blade Runner...all the hallmarks are there.

While I enjoyed this two hour jaunt down memory lane, I can't think of much reason that you'd have to go back and watch this now, in 2012, apart from nostalgia or love of the once-plentiful genre of cyberpunk. It's a fun ride with cool action scenes, but the story won't blow you away, since it's pretty familiar genre territory. The characters are...well they're inoffensive but ultimately forgettable. I will say that I like the show, but this is the kind of anime I was weaned on, and I have a love for cyberpunk, so I'm a bit biased.

Perhaps this would be of interest for historical reasons. As I said, this is the sort of anime I watched a lot of back in the 90s, mostly because this sort of stuff was all there was. As a fan, loving anime before the internet came to prominence, I kind of thought that shows like Armitage III ostensibly were anime, that this is what anime was and all it was. Though I enjoyed Armitage and its ilk, then and now, I am certainly glad I turned out to be wrong.

Contrary to popular recommendation against Doki!, I actually find it just as humorous and lovable as the first season. [spoiler]Tadase & Ikuto are still duking it out for Amu, as well as Kairi and Nadeshiko? [/spoiler]

Honestly, watching Amu decide which guy she truly loves, makes me so thankful and glad I'm married and don't have her decision. Hahaha. Though, if I were her, I'd probably go with Ikuto. But that's me.

I love the summer ^_^ And I'm starting off a Miyazaki/Ghibli stint, so that I can rewatch the movies I love and finally get around to watching some of those older ones I never got around to seeing before. So far I've watched Castle in the Sky, which is still fun and awesome, and watched Castle of Cagliostro for the first time. I didn't really get into it (I don't really care for heroes of that sort), but it was an enjoyable watch all the same. The atmosphere and scenery is gorgeous - but then, this is Miyazaki we're talking about ^_^
