Just look at all the 80's stuff they did with 20somethings doing Highschool parts. I think we've hit the worst of their "growing up".... from here on out it should be smooth sailing so long as Rowling can the next two books out and the "kids" don't burn out on doing the movies back-to-back.

Dumbledor will be interesing to see how he turns out... hopefully the new actor can keep the same feel for the character rather than trying to do his own thing.

They're all really old now, and there are still 4 more books to make into movies. I think they said that Goblet is in their list, but they weren't sure about Ootp and the next two books. According to IMDB, Goblet of Fire is due next year, but Order of the Phoenix isn't until 2007. I wonder if it is going to kill the movies if the stars leave the new movies.

In my humble opinion, it really would. I think they should just crack the whip (metaphorically, of course) and just make them more quickly. I mean, most movies are filmed in 3-6 months. If they'd just hurry it along, they could make the movies with the kids they already have.

Besides, these kids they have now aren't that old. Daniel, for example has just caught up to Harry in this newest movie. Even if he were to pass him by a few years, the Disney channel has been using twenty year olds to play highschool, and even a few middle school, students for ages.

Moreover, if they can make a person look 85 or give Nicole Kidman a fake nose, they can make a couple of kids look a little young than they really are.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Ok, I haven't read the Harry Potter books, let's get that out of the way from the beginning. I am ignorant of the HP universe (other than seeing the first movie), and because of that, I'm not going to be quick to say that Harry Potter is evil because it contains magic, or conversely, that Harry Potter is great just because kids are reading something.

I am curious about something though, and I think that those of you who have read the books could have some insight into this. Somebody said that the HP series (of movies (and perhaps books as well) could very well take a much darker turn. This would make sense, as many original Potter fans would be older and wanting a more mature HP universe. My question is this: Just how dark is too dark?

It is clear that the Harry Potter series has created more interest in magic. Whether or not this interest leads to serious Wiccan beliefs and practices is debatable, although I am sure there are some people got their first desire to seriously study these beliefs and practices from Harry Potter.

In my mind, Harry Potter seems fairly innocent, at least right now anyway, but I could foresee Rowling (or maybe some director that wants to take a bit of artistic license) taking the Harry Potter series across a line past which Christians could no longer support or defend it. My question is then: Where is that line?

I wonder how they will do the werewollf part.
I'm personally hoping for a pretty cool transformation scene... y'know the ones that really make you go "woah!" Oh and he hopefully should go full wolf not some combination of human and wolf... I never got he impressionfrom the books that he looked like a mix... correct me if I'm wrong though.

I suppose it could happen. Honestly, for Christian parents, they should always read what their kids read, and for non-christian parents, well wiccan isn't exactly worse than atheist or agnostic or buddhist... We know it will all end them up in the same place, so if the books do end up getting more reality than is pallatable, I think the wise Christian parents can spot it and cut it off. I don't think it's at that point, even if Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix are a bit more violent. It's no where near as violent as, say, Lord of the Rings, and it hasn't really gotten farther into reality so unless that changes, I am looking forward to the next two books, and see no problem with the current ones. I think that the Christian parents should just take precautions to let them know that things like real magic as well as other things like lying are totally wrong, and enjoy the books/movies with them, discussing it together and guiding their steps.

The question of where the line is, that's unique to just about each person... for some Harry is already over the line. For me, it's hard to say... I think I'd know it when I came to it, but as Bob mentioned already, LotR is already far more violent and dark than Harry is... and Rowling has been good bout keeping the "dark" side as equating to "bad."

Some people have called HP morally ambigous, but I say it's no more so than anything Disney has been putting out for the last 10-20 years, and even lying has it's place... do you really thing that "do not bear any false witness" referrs to something like the Christians who hid Jews in WWII? I'm not saying that everything Harry and Co. have done has been right and good, but within the confines of the story the rulebreaking is done for the best, and I think that started to show itself better in the "order."

As for the Wiccan thing... take a links like these (mods, kill the links if they're out of line):
http://paganwiccan.about.com/library/blharrypotter.htm
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/arts/3012270.stm

On top of that one article (which I didn't link to) talked about the other side of things, that the Wiccan community was concerned about false representation of their beliefs and whatnot (much as we as Christians do whenever Christianity is portrayed in movies).

Having said all that.... to bring this back on topic...

I've got training at work on Friday, and they're letting me our early (I have to start earlier too)... so I'll be going for a 5pm showing or something on Friday of the new movie... I'll have to post how it was Friday or Saturday.

Three major fallacies that woman who made that documentary pushed: That the Patronus was a "horned god" (it was just an ethereal form that took the shape of a stag...), that the Patronus was his "father" (unless I seriously missed something), and that some real witches haven't been complaining about the misrepresentation of their beliefs... I'm sure I'll find many more if I search through it... But, this is not the place, even if it is the time... (did that make any sense?)

I hope I get to Richardson Springs before PoA is out of theaters... I may have a fellow potter fan to watch it with, even though he's not all that fond of the movies (he was ok with Fellowship of the Ring, but still complained about a lot, particularly the Balrog scene.) Of course, even among my company there, I won't be safe to discuss it openly... I'll have to pick my discussions wisely as I do with Anime...

Thanks for the links madphil. And you do really have a good point about it really being on about the same level with recent Disney fare. Guess I'm just being paranoid.

And uh, where was I when there was a second movie. Man I need to get out more.

And as I've mentioned over and over in other threads, it's no worse than Star Wars, either.

Anyway. I think my friends went and saw the movie without me... I'll have to have a little talk with them. (lol) Actually, they probably called while I was sleeping, and my mom probably told them that I was sick and couldn't go... So I'm guessing some of you have seen it already. How was it? Was it better than the last two? I'd love to hear about it, if you can tell me in any way that doesn't involve spoiling.

Some friends went last night... They even bought a ticket for me, but I couldn't go... What's up with that? I had laundry to finish, and sleep to get... They went at midnight (the local premiere)

Their feelings are they're against it for children, but feel that as adults they can handle anything and would never let their kids read or watch them... So people who don't really like it went to see the premiere, and me, who loves it, couldn't even though they bought an extra ticket... Man...that's rather depressing... Of course, I don't need a premiere, but it would be a great first... I've never gone to a premiere, local or otherwise... I know I'll be going to the "Goblet of Fire" local premiere in Chico... I loved that book too much not to see it as soon as it is released... I hope no more actors die or drop out before then...

My parents and little sister went to see it last night and loved it. It was cool because my little sister (who is 10) just finished the PoA a week ago. She was really excited about having read the book in only 1 week in order to have it finished by the time the movie released. Anyway she loved it and so did my parents so im really looking forward to this one.

Gah. My mom and brother and sister and I are going to the movies today. I wanted to see PoA but my mom says she wants to see it first before she takes my 6-year-old sister, so we're seeing Shrek 2 instead. (But the kid has seen RotK and Signs for crying out loud!!) Ah well. Shrek 2 was a good movie, too...

Release date is June 4th.... the title one the thread is a bit off.

I sorely underestimated the power of Harry Potter.

I pulled into the parking lot of the theater I was going to see it at on Friday, I've never seen so many cars in that lot, ever, even when it was a thriving mall (which it's now about to be torn down)

On top of that there where 4 busses parked along one side of the mall lot.

After parking in the middle of noware on the lower parking area, walking in the heat clear across the lot and side of the theater, then up the stairs (almost 2 stories in height), I found out the 5pm showing was sold out and the next one wasn't untill 6pm... at full price.... with nothing to do for an hour.

So I'm going to wait till Wednesday or Thursday and go see it then (unless I can get out of work early Mon or Tue).

I was so utterly miffed.... I mean, when Shrek 2 came out they had showings like every 15 mins.... opening day of HP and they had them about every hour... what gives?

sigh..... oh well.

Well, I saw it, and it was good...yet I was sligtly dissappointed...*sigh*

The movie didn't go into deep detail, which I think would pose a problem to people who did not read the book. For example,
...Remus didn't explain to Harry how he knew how to use the Map. Also, they didn't go into enough detail on Sirius, and how he really wasn't a murderer...
There are other stuff too, i believe, but I forgot them...^__^
I think that, esspecially in the beggining, it went by really quickly. it didn't even seem to be 5 min. into the movie before Harry left. I would have liked it to be a little slower in the beggining. . .but maybe thats just me.

But, on the plus side, I think that most of the characters are improving on their acting skills. ^_^ I like how they made the Dementors as well. ^__^
Hm. I would have liked to see more of the different shops in Hogsmade...

hehe, maybe I'm being too demanding or something...haha... ^____^''''''

oh, but I must say...Tom is cute! and Dan also got cute~^__= hhehhe...ooo and the person who plays Neville got cute too!
Okay, I'm done...hehe

It was an awesome movie! I loved it. Still like the book better, but it was cool. New director did wonders for it. ^_^ The first two were ok, but they were terrible compared to the books. They did the books no form of justice whatsoever. Third did it as much justice as a movie can do, that isn't done the uber long way like Lord of the Rings.

It gets worse in GoF... They are removing the entire "Dursleys'" scene in GoF... So, we won't get any
TonTongue candy things...
I hope they don't get rid of the twins' roles alltogether... They'll have to shorten GoF considerably, seeing as it's about twice as long as PoA...

They're getting a new director AGAIN! Hmm... Alfonso whateverhisnameis said he needs a long siesta after that, but he may be back for "Order of the Phoenix."
