And this week in my U.S History class we will be watching Saving Private Ryan to commence our study of WWII]

*wince* Yeah, you might want to rethink lunch if you get squeamish at all.

Anyway, over Easter break I watched Psycho and El Orfanato with my roommate, who is getting interested in suspense thrillers and horror movies. Both of those movies are wonderfully suspenseful and creepy, but also just really beautifully put together.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army. I love this movie, everytime I see the fight scene with the elemental I remember why. Its so beautiful and saddening at the same time.

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS.

It's the perfect send up & love letter to all things horror. It really is a movie made by film geeks for film geeks. It has everything a true horror buff would ever want. There's even a perfect shout out to Japanese horror.

Also, I'm not trolling. This is what I am planning to see this later tonight:

Oh good someone else has seen Cabin In the Woods. I don't see many people from here seeing it because of the gore, but it was so good. Also I watched the SciFi show Monster man when he made that two headed shark and I wanna see it too xD. Neane I can always count on you too see similar movies to me.

It's an excellent movie made for film fans. It isn't torture porn. It is the First movie of the year I can easily recommend to people without hesitation There is a lot of gore but aside from a few bits here & there you're cheering so loudly & having such a fun rush that it is more fun than squeamish. It's one of those "horror movie to end all horror movies" movies that come along every once in a while, deconstruct everything and should theoretically make it impossible to take straightforward films of its sort seriously anymore, and kill off the genre, but they still keep coming and people still keep going to see them.

SPOILERS: DO NOT READ IF HAVEN'T SEEN FILM.
The ****er at the end having a human hand makes perfect sense in the deconstruction sense. The Gods aren't fear or anything like that. The Gods are a clear cut stand in for something. The Gods are Us. The Viewer. Cabin is a full on deconstruction & celebration of horror. In the film it is made clear that as long as some country somewhere in the world is delivering good "sacrifices" to please the Gods of Old, they'll lie in rest. They'll be placated. BUT, after the the last bastion of "sacrifices" - the good ole' US of A- fails to deliver the type of sacrifice the Gods will accept, one where the Virgin dies last, the Gods awaken to destroy those who go out of their way to please them.

Once you look at the context of the film as an elaborate & awesome essay on horror (or populist filmmaking in general) it can't be avoided the Gods are the Viewers. They're the Horror Fans who clamor for something new as long as it plays by the rules. The third act of Cabin sure does not play by the rules. Joss Whedon & Drew Goddard ARE the Downstairs Guys, they're the ones creating the story for the Gods knowing that their existence (i.e. their careers in the industry) depends on keeping the Gods happy.

Once the Gods as Filmgoer is taken into account, having the God represented as a Giant Human Hand is just too perfect. I can even see that Hand as thousands of angry teenage horror fans voting the film a 1 on IMDB because it didn't go the way they wanted. Lol. I LOVE this movie.
I watched 2-Headed Shark Attack. I have no idea how chomping a boat propeller would cause a TNT leveled explosion.

Also saw this really awesome pinball documentary called Special when lit. It's on free hulu, should definitely check it out.

Two notes, Torture porn...eh.. I HATE THAT TERM. I am planning on writing a blog about that here shortly, thats a long angry rant for another time. Also I have to say that is a great interpretation of what many don't understand. It really was a fantastic movie, from countless call backs to old horror films Hellraiser (a personal favorite), Evil Dead (the obvious one) , Shining (near the end you see the two girls) and countless others. Fantastic film, if it wasn't for Dark Knight or Avengers it would be a almost garantee'd top movie of the year.

Yes, it was an awesome movie. I watched Iron Sky (2012) aka Yuri's Revenge the Movie. I Enjoyed myself...my Judgement, not really favourable, however.
I had this incredulous trollface grin through most of it, I only rarely burst out an actual laugh. It wasn't really bad... but ... even if I want so much to like it, I can't help but feel it ended up seriously underdelivering on the zany crazy comedy part of the deal. It tries too hard to be an action flick, political commentary, absurd comedy, hodgepodge of memetic movie references and a tech demo all in the same time that the point gets lost there somewhere.

And same goes for the acting. I know that the nazi guys (and girl) should act like posturing pricks, but they aren't as over-the-top to be funny ha-ha but funny are-you--serious way. I'm not sure if it works since the hilarity is already thin on the ground here, painted with blackish tries-to-be-ironic colors. There's something about the timing that really doesn't work like comedy should. Maybe it just needed more actual punchlines. The "Sarah Palin" and the "media counsellor gal" were by far the best ones, but they just weren't enough.

In short, I thought it was ... too many times dull. Even... boring. As it was supposed to be comedy, that's a bad thing.

I guess I like it more than not like it. But I also can't help but feel it doesn't deliver what I expected. Maybe I expected too much.
When is somebody going to make a movie about Internet Nazis? It's not Godwin... if they're really Nazis.

I faced the majestic beauty that is Paul Verhoeven's SHOWGIRLS. I had never seen this masterpiece before & all I can say is .... Holy ****! It's wonderfully awful with performances & characters that don't resemble anything remotely human! It's a beautiful work of trash art.

Ok, all sarcasm aside, it was somehow an incredibly enjoyable piece of ****. It was entertainingly awful & amazing for 90% of it's running time. Seriously, such a fun view....
until 15 minutes from the end the movie tries to get "serious" with an unpleasant out of nowhere rape scene.
Aside from that scene the movie isn't misogynistic more that it's humanistic. Pure garbage.

Was watching some old car chase movies. Obligatory is Bullit, with the famous Mustang/Charger chase at the end; no music, no dialog, all engine and tire squeal. Other obligatory movie is the 1974 Gone in 60 Seconds, written, directed, produced, and starring car geek H. B. Halicki, who also did all his own stunts and provided most of the cars from his personal collection. Amazing that almost the entire movie, including the stunts and super long chase scene (which pretty much makes up the bulk of the movie) were all improvised. Car chase aside, it's a pretty bad 70's movie.

Watched Paranoia (a movie made by Brad Jones aka the Cinema snob of Twgwtg fame.) Weird film, if you can get over the low production values its a good film.

I just finished watching Senna for the second time. I recommend anyone that is into documentary type films watch it, even if you're not all that into Formula 1. The film covers the rise and untimely death of one of the greatest champions the sport has ever seen.

Watched The Prestige for the second time because a couple friends hadn't seen it. Just as awesome and brilliant as it was the first time ^_^

I also watched the old Alfred Hitchcock movie Rope. OH MY GOODNESS YES. A feature-length film with no cuts (save the necessary ones when they changed the reel, and those cuts were the smoothest I think I've ever seen), delightfully suspenseful, and that climax! :wow!: That was an awesome movie.

Watched How to Train Your Dragon again because I felt like it ^_^

Also watched Freaks, an old movie from the '30s about circus freaks (midgets, people with no limbs, etc. etc.) that was a chilling reminder of how black-hearted human nature is. You probably wouldn't be able to get away with making a movie like this nowadays, so it was an interesting experience.

Went to see The Avengers a few days ago. It was a lot better than I expected.
It still had flaws, like how it started out with a really cliche superhero plot (it got better as the movie went on), but there was plenty of action and, surprisingly, some comedic stuff as well.

However, the superhero movie I'm really waiting for is Dark Knight Rises...

I also saw The Avengers, I saw it after I left my College earlier.

There are some genuinely good moments. The acting isn’t atrocious [except for one] and the directing, especially in the frantic battle sequences, is surprisingly adept.

Unbreakable. Back when M. Night Shyamalan movies were actually good. I really liked it. Thought provoking and suspenseful. And you can't argue with a movie starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson.

Tangled, because it's just too awesome XD

And I also watched Lars and the Real Girl, a surprisingly touching story about a man on the verge of becoming a hermit, whose neighbors and friends learn how to reach out to him when he buys a sex doll and believes she's his girlfriend. It's much cleaner than it sounds
