What anime are you watching?

Oh, I didn't mean that it would be intrinsically better, I was just stating a personal preference of exploring this particular premise from a more semiological point of view. I, like you, believe that a show doesn't have to be super mature and transcendental to be enjoyable... I'm still watching Naruto, for goodness sake!

Also -I will confess it here- Kyoko (the younger sister) annoys me blind, and it annoys me even further that she or her antics are often used as a plot device.

And yeah, this Siren Visual company releases great stuff. I'm about to get started with Durara!! but I'm pretty sure you guys get that one too.

Started watching 2 new ones today.
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Already up to episode 6. Very interesting. It really picked up after the 3rd episode. Weird but interesting.

One Piece
Yeah I have a long ways to go with this one. I decided to give it a try and I am glad I did. I am really enjoying it. Watched 5 episodes in a day. Now I just have to figure out when the fillers start and then I will start skipping around episodes.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, there's extremely low filler content in One Piece and most of it is just one or two episodes long. There are indeed some short arcs that are not essential but they are definitely and originally canonical and carry consequence through the rest of the series.

Well, One Piece -as it's the case of most shounen titles- is something that you don't particularly watch or read for their deep, intricate plots. You watch it for the fights! Seen our underdog heroes manage to outpower or outwit enemies far more powerful is the reward of the series and what makes you keep coming back for more. Just skimming through a wiki will never carry the same emotional value of seeing a bloodied, battered Luffy manage to get on his feet again and come up with an ultimate attack in the nick of time that barely manages to get through the enemy's defenses.

NGE 18 + 19- 18 horrified me in some of the deepest ways possible. My emotions were torn to pieces and back. 19 brought me back, but this stuff is really.... really... This is dark. I've been guessing at some of these plot 'twists' (so glad I didn't drink my stupid juice this morning), but man. I don't. Even. Know. And 19 is ending on something I can only begin to guess at.

I actually find Kyoko's antics amusing so far and can see a lot of parallels between Yasako and Kyoko to the girls in Totoro, which is very nice since Totoro is my second favorite Miyazaki film, though I'm fine with being like "This show is fantastic but it makes me want a show like it but made just for adults", which is kind of how I feel about Gundam, where I can appreciate its writing but also think it could make something I'd love.

I should point out, though, that what I was trying to say was not that Dennou Coil couldn't be good if it wasn't more like Kaiba or SAC, but that it can be a children's show while also being mature and transcendental. This is also how I feel about Baccano!, which is possibly the most affecting anime I've ever seen.

Also, while we do have Durarara!! it is a pretty terrible release, which is the only reason I don't own the otherwise great show that is also important to my fandom.

I am much more interested in the One Piece world and characters than I am in, say, Nami's fight for that island.

I haven't really updated in a long time, and I was trying to wait till I had caught up on everything but.....

I finished Shigofumi which had me in tears, multiple times over. I liked it and it reminded me of Kino's Journey.

Caught up to speed with Mouretsu Pirates, which is shaping up to be my favorite thing this season. I am even sort of maybe liking that theme song. And I really like the little Irish sounding insert song.

Black Rock Shooter: So different from the OVA. Wonder where things are going to go.

Ano Natsu De Matteru: Only two epsiodes in (sooo behind) but I have so far found it to be...... boring. ^^;

I am really loving Smile Precure! Can't wait for the next episode.

As for Another, I am also really behind. Two and a half episodes.

Watching the original Hunter X Hunter. Which is way, way better than the 2011 one. It's pace is slower, the characters and story seems deeper. Yep, definetely better than the original one.

G Gundam - up to ep. 25.

So big things just happened, and nothing's the same anymore. We had a big season finale arc, where our hero made his big, long-expected breakthrough, fought his greatest nemeses, and realized how much he and his assistant really love each other. All in a day's work for Domon Kasshu! But if that wasn't enough, the plot jumped into the next phase, and he'll be fighting twice as hard to hold up under the pressure. Also, there is now a Gundam who is half-rowboat, which fills me with glee every time I see it. This show keeps getting better and better.

I don't think it's as bad as what I made it appear here, but it brought up a lot of emotions I have about death and killing. And yes, made me cry. It's more about how it came about than what happened that made me just.... ugh. Scratch it- I'm still horrified by what happened.

Well, perhaps the rollercoaster ride of emotions is what makes the series so popular? That's what I admire about anime; the emphesis on emotion, whether it's comfortable or not. But the idea that you can be horrified (from what I observed, that doesn't happen quite often) well....it's a little frightening. That doesn't mean I'm backing out, though...

Watching Kanon. I'm basically still the beginning but near the middle. It's pretty interesting... I like the dreamlike quality of Key's works. And the characters are cool too.

Just finished watching Air. It made me cry at the end. A lot. Some of it was kinda strange but overall it was decent.

I haven't been watching much anime lately: too busy! But this week two things happened at the same time: my copy of Princess Jellyfish arrived in the mail, and I had a cold so bad that I had to stay home from work for a day. So, I spent a day rewatching as many Princess Jellyfish episodes as I could, and since then I've been watching one here or there when I need a break. I'm watching in the English dub: it's good, but I prefer the Japanese, esp. because there are some exchanges of dialog that are hard for me to follow in English, either because they're so fast or so quiet (this is especially true of Jiji's lines; one almost needs subtitles even in English because she's so quiet).

I like this show just as much as I did the first time around; maybe more, in some ways. Kuranosuke annoyed me at first when I first watched the series (in fact, the first time I watched the series, I had been rooting for a Shu X Tsukimi match precisely because Kuranosuke was annoying!), but I like him much better the second time around.

Watching this does make me wish there were a second season. Alas, I doubt that is ever to be.

Baka and Test: Episode 4

Watched Nisemonogatari 7 and Durarara!! 1-5 It definitely is the spiritual successor of Baccano! I was very surprised that we got an origin story plus lots of hints to unravel most of the introductory mysteries as early as episode 4, but episode 5 showed that things are barely getting started. It pleasantly keeps reminding me of Boogiepop Phantom, so I'm hooked!

Yeah, while Durarara!! is definitely written by the same guy as Baccano!, it is written much more like Narita's novels than Baccano! was. Baccano! the Animation, in part probably because they knew it wouldn't sell, really only works the way it does and doesn't leave much room for expansion, though the way it is written is beautiful and I wouldn't have it any other way, but yeah, your surprise is probably because you're seeing how Narita writes without how Takahiro paced Baccano!.
