Hehe, I just watched and marathoned the series and movie myself, though I haven't watched Haruhi-chan. (I'd sorta like to get my hands on the light novels now.) I love the way the characters all play off of each other!

Watching Gintama 235. As if the parodies of Star Wars and Gundam wern't bad enough, they had to do Transformers as well. Sigh...at least the 1986 movie is getting some recognition. Heck, even the music is similar to the scene in the TF movie...

Edit: I spoke too soon. They just parodied one of those "super robot" shows. Gintama, you never fail me to facepalm.

Mobile Police Patlabor: TV

Gundam, Macross, Mazinger, and to a lesser extent Votoms: these are mecha franchises that fans hold up as the best, most consistantly good multi-series mecha properties around. In my opinion, Mobile Police Patlabor deserves to be on this list.

Most people that know Patlabor associate it with Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell, Angel's Egg, Sky Crawlers), the director of the first two Patlabor films and two OAVs. Oshii actually was one of seven writers to work on the script for the show, while Naoyuki Yoshinaga (animation director of Urusei Yatsura) serves as the director for Patlabor TV. Perhaps because Oshii wasn't so heavily involved with all aspects of the show, its tone is a great deal lighter than most of what he is famous for.

In the world of Patlabor, robots (known as labors) are commonplace, but not as defenders of justice or destroyers of worlds. Robots function pretty much exactly like automobiles and construction equipment do today. They are tools for mundane tasks; therefore, they are not unusual furniture of the world. Occasionally, however, someone steals a labor, causes damage with one, or just generally uses a labor to make a nuisance of themselves. Enter: Special Vehicles, a division of the Japanese police that was created to prevent labor crime. They are given patrol labors (patrol+labor=Patlabor!) that serve to deter criminals and make the public feel safe. The show follows Division 2 of Special Vehicles from the point in which the main character, Noa Izumi, joins the team.

Patlabor is not what you think a robot show is like. This show is about regular folks. Police officers, sure; arresters of criminals and robot pilots, I grant you. But it is all executed in such a way that it doesn't feel otherworldly or fantastical. The future world of Patlabor is exactly like our own, just with the addition of labors. Again, there are no evil, world-destroying robots, no monsters, no dinosaur empire (Getter shout!)...instead of over-the-top action, the show focuses on its truly endearing characters and their interactions with one another and just their lives in general. The void left by the lack of constant battling is filled with clever humor, fun situations and characters you grow to really love (Ota, Kanuka, Shige) being themselves. Each member of SVD2 has a distinct and enjoyable personality, and it is a joy to watch Noa grow over time.

Now, don't think the show is boring. There is action, but it isn't the heartbeat of the show. The experience of watching the series genuinely felt like hanging out with buddies each night.

If you want another GaoGaiGar, Macross or Gurren Lagann, this isn't what you want. However, if you don't mind generally episodic series that have mecha but feel more human than most, then please check out Patlabor TV.

Legend of the Millenniun Dragon- Not great, but not bad and definitely better than indifferent. It's very interesting- and I have a hard time believing that it was made by Studio Perroit, it has some great art and animation.

Crest of the Stars is a lovely introduction to what is apparently an epic in the vein of LOGH. It certainly takes its time and it really is an introduction. I was worried the Abh were just going to be space versions of fantasy elves, but they're fantastic and have some personality while all maintaining their trademark aloofness. Quite enjoyable and I'll definitely see this one to the end when I get the chance.

I needed a lot of background noise while working on comics earlier this week and ended up watching all of Rideback and Angle Beats!

Rideback was pretty disappointing. The integration of CG and 2D animation is quite impressive, but none of the characters are interesting at all, and the plot never manages to get any momentum going.

Angel Beats! wasn't so much disappointing as frustrating. It's a GORGEOUS piece of animation, especially by TV standards, but the plot's a big pile of everything that annoys me in anime.

Oh, and I also watched Otaku no Video. Man, that one was a trip, if only to see how the more things change, the more they stay the same.

(also, TheSubtleDoctor: HECK YES. I love the Patlabor series)

Yeah, I found the same issue with Rideback, though like you said the animation was really nice. The series was too short, and it felt really hurried.

D.Gray-man episodes 24-25

Finally past the Krory arc, and hopefully will soon discover some more stuff about Allen!

Lovely Complex episodes 6-7

Just as funny as ever  Episode 6 may be my favorite episode of the entire show.

So guys, I haven't posted here in a while because I've been slowly making my way through the journey that is LoGH, but I have watched some stuff at the club/school.

The Sacred Blacksmith was a show that I knew would be pretty bad, and, well, it met all my expectations. As expected of Manglobe, the production itself was pretty decent, and some of the action was good, but the plot was eh and the pacing was atrocious, to say nothing of how bland everything about it is. I watched it because it's generic fantasy crap, which is exactly why you should avoid it like almost all of Gonzo's catalog.

Trigun was kind of a mixed bag. While when it was on, it was pretty decent, but when it wasn't, it ultimately came across as kind of forgettable and average. The production also had a pretty big impact on the show; one of the episodes was completely unenjoyable because of how terrible the animation for it was.

What ultimately got to me, though, was how mediocre almost all of the action was. It wasn't Trinity Blood's lolGonzo bad by any stretch, but almost all of the action scenes had two problems: there wasn't much to them(choreography!) and there was almost never any sort of emotional power out of them. While the best anime have both (Sword of the Stranger, apparently Air Master I guess?), Trigun's action always felt incidental(between two people with little to no connection) and weak (enemy shoots at Vash some, Vash dodges or somehow avoids dying, Vash stops enemy, enemy is killed by someone other than Vash). Almost all of the Gung Ho Guns, with the exception of Legato, are introduced and are even mildly interesting, but then are defeated very quickly and then are disposed of.

On the other hand, the "fight" with Legato was mildly interesting, when the comedy was good it was very funny, there were some genuinely powerful moments, and Wolfwood was awesome. It also ended very well, which certainly helped. Ultimately, an enjoyable watch that has some issues that really nagged at me the whole time. I'll still be watching Badlands Rumble, for sure.

Too late, I already bought Sacred Blacksmith months ago. It was a generic fantasy and the pacing was not that great and the ending was incomplete, but I found it somewhat enjoyable.

I have to agree that Trigun is somewhat forgettable and the average sci-fi anime despite its great hype.

Have recently watch:
Gintama episode 235
Shinryaku!? Ika-musume episode 7
Persona 4 episode 8 (Experiment X kills...)
