How did you choose your major/college?

That reminds me that I'll be off to college soon myself O.O

I've already had an idea for a Major, but not a college. That I am still looking for, but I've already decided I want to get into Communications ('cause I kind of want to get into media). And I'm thinking of doing Graphic Designer as a Minor.

I chose my university, because there were three proper ones to chose from in the state, and I chose the one that was the most prestigious / had the best reputation. (I think they were all the same price.)
I decided I liked computers, and I was prepared to put in a decent amount of study to know stuff, so I decided to do a double degree of Computer Systems Engineering and Maths & Computer Science. Computer Science was the main kind of area I was after, but I definitely appreciated the broader hardware perspective of the engineering.

Picking a school wasn't too hard - I get a 25% discount for having family there with me. It was actually the only school I applied to...and pretty much knew I'd get in (it's known for being an easy school to get into, but then having a tough(er) workload - true facts, as far as I have personally dealt with!)

As far as major goes, I am automatically in their Bible/Theology program (Bible College) and have had the decision to choose a second major. Long story in a nutshell, I feel very strongly lead and called to ministry through Psychology, believing to have heard the Lord's voice telling me to "Go and heal the broken..the self-injurers, suicidal, addicted, and eating disordered." I pray often about the decision to major in Psychology/Counseling to make sure I am still on the right track. Going into my third year now, Psychology is still very much my passion. I am doing what I love and what I fully believe I am called to.

I was forced...... lol My dad and Brother graduated from the same college. i decided nto to go and ym family was fine with it but God wasn't. so He made me go lol.

I see lots of people warning you against changing majors, and I want to advise you not to be too freaked out about that. I know lots of people who changed their major and ended up fine, as long as they didn't do it too late. The main thing is to be sure to take a class in your major really early! That way you find out if you really like it. Classes in college are not like classes in high school. I disliked high school history and like college history a lot, for instance. A lot of it depends on if you end up liking your professors, which really matters.

Mind you, if you change your major enough times you end up like my husband taking eight years to graduate...though that worked out too. If he had finished in the standard four he'd have been gone before I got there.

I worry a little about everyone telling you "pick something you really like to do", because I know a lot of happy people who have jobs they never had a chance to even think about in high school--computer language designer, accountant, human resource specialist, social worker, pastor for that matter. I'd say pick something that you think you might enjoy and be good at, maybe a couple of somethings and try out a class in each--you've got to do general education requirements anyhow. Also notice if you really like one of your gen ed classes and consider majoring in that.
