Christianity and anime? 本当に!?

Postby Tenchi » Wed Jun 29, 2011 9:40 am

Hello everyone! Tenchi here. I didn't know that there was actually a forum for christians that like anime! It's always been a part of my life that I've been embarrassed about, probably because of the completely illegitimate pestering of my conscience to me regarding whether or not anime (from it's origins in Japanese culture and oftentimes Buddhist/Shinto system of belief) is really OK for someone like me to enjoy so much. Finding this forum has been quite a relief! :D

Anyway, I'm from the U.S. (I don't think I have my timezone set properly for my username yet), and besides anime, I love to program (I know c++, Java, and Flash AS3), hoping to be able to develop artificial intelligence for robots someday. (Not the stereotypical kind that you think of that has robots rivaling/surpassing human intelligence and taking over the world, but the kind that keeps them from walking into walls. Although, I admit, the first kind is interesting as well. >:D)

Nice to meet you all!

Welcome to CAA. Always glad to see someone new pop in. :) What are some of your favorite anime if you don't mind me asking?
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ah, right, probably the most obvious question. My bad.

Anyway, my favorite animes, huh... Recently, the list has changed after watching Clannad. :) Here they are:

1. Clannad/Clannad After story
2. Code Geass
3. Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles (So sad that it ended early... I really should get into reading manga so that I can finish it.)
4. One Piece
5. Dragon ball (original, z, and gt) (Even as much of a "newbie" show it is, it's still too much of a classic from my childhood. XD)
6. Naruto/Naruto Shippuden
7. Detective Conan (Could have been better if it was a more plot-concise thing, but I suppose that's just how it was made.)
8. Death note (Should be higher up, but the ended ruined it for me. If it stuck to the manga, it would have rivaled Code Geass, in my opinion.)
9. Pumpkin Scissors? (interesting, but nothing special)
10. Fullmetal Alchemist (I don't see anything special about this, or why people like it so much. It's pretty average to me. I haven't seen the remade one yet, though... Brotherhood, was it?)

Also, Tenchi Muyo is a series that I liked, but I leave it out of the list because I find it hard to compare it to other series. It has a kind of special meaning to me, besides being the first anime I watched besides those from Toonami when I was a kid, but that's something in the past that I don't really need to get into right now.

And I'm not a big fan bleach. I mean, I like the fighting in it. I guess it's as interesting as any other anime with action-packed fighting and characters with special abilities in it. But the whole story and setting is just too awkward for me.

And I'm not even gonna get started on how much I had to drag myself through Inuyasha. :bang: Although I haven't really seen the newer one that's been made.

It may seem like I'm too mainstream from this list, but Anime's always been a kind of personal hobby I haven't really had the chance to talk to people about with, so I've never really been suggested anime by anyone except for a close friend of my who's now living in Japan.

Also, I have seen more anime than that listed, so someone's probably going to mention some awesome anime that I've seen and forgot about when making this list. XD

Oh, and did I mention that I tend to talk a bit too much? I apologize in advance, I tend to get carried away with my thoughts when I've got a keyboard in front of me.

1. I found it when looking to discuss Clannad with someone. Sadly, I don't have many friend who like anime. To talk to fellow Christians who like anime is like a dream come true. :D Well, anyway, I found Clannad to be such a work of art that I needed to talk about it.

2. Clannad, mostly the afterstory, but it's all good as an anime.

3. ...well... I hesitate to answer this because I do enjoy reading manga, but I never do when there is an anime that I can watch. That being said, manga is a beatiful art form as well, putting emotion and beauty into pictures that can sometimes hardly be put into motion as would be necessary in an anime. When it comes down to it, unfortunately I don't read much manga that much probably because I'm too lazy to. If I did start reading again, though, I'd read Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, picking up where the anime left off unsatisfactorily.

Hi, Tenchi.

How did you come up with your username?

I took it from the main character of the anime "Tenchi Muyo." That, and it means Heaven and Earth in Japanese, or so I've heard.

It therefore had a sort of aspect to it that reminded me of the great universe that God has made, so I picked it.

^ I read Tsubasa after mostly finishing the anime. Just remember that it's a good idea to read the crossover manga xxxHolic to see what's going on in both worlds, and get a more complete explanation for stuff.

It was totally worth it. I much preferred the manga, even though the anime was pretty decent.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who really enjoy Tsubasa. :D

So, we've got someone who thinks the anime is decent, and one who thinks that the anime was awesome. Of course, perhaps you both feel the same way, and the manga was just so awesome it made the anime look normal. :thumb:

At any rate, I'll try to bring myself to read the manga. Perhaps the thing I'll miss the most is the color, but I guess I can't keep that excuse up forever.

As for XXXHolic, I saw the anime for that. I'm not sure how far that anime actually reached, but it seemed kind of dull. If there really is a connection between the two, though, I guess I'll read that manga as well.

Do Tsubasa and XXXHolic follow the same timeline, chapter by chapter, or does one move faster than the other? Are they both finished, or are they still ongoing?

Also, on a completely unrelated note and an attempt to stay on topic, some more things about myself, if I may be so bold:

I am a part of the Roman Catholic church. I've been blessed to be raised by two parents in a wonderful family of 7 brothers and sisters (myself included in that figure), and so I've been Catholic since I can remember. If I had to choose a time of "ephiphany," if you will, I would say that I first started taking my faith seriously in middle school. I went to a private catholic middle school/high school, so I had the chance to go to the chapel every day and pray, and so I began to develop a lifelong relationship with God. I would always feel so at peace when talking to God, like I could share everything with him, and what I learned about God's eternal forgiveness and love, even dying on the cross for us, forever convinced me where my belief needed to be.

My favorite video game... Hm... well, I could say Clannad, but I don't think that should count. I'd say Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of time, still the best game to date. :thumb:

...Although I unfortunately haven't had the pleasure of playing Final Fantasy 7, or any of the final fantasy games besides the 4th one... So hard to get a copy nowadays, unfortunately. That would be the next game I want to play, if I can do it legally.

My favorite food would be ribs of any kind, and I'm a true carnivore at heart. Give me any kind of meat, and I'll eat it. Well... that was the case until I recently saw an article on this forum regarding the recycling of a certain human waste product, anyway... :dizzy:

Anyway, I just noticed a smiley that would fit me perfectly, so I'll end with this:

You know, This is an opinion, But FullMetal alchemist: Brotherhood beat the first anime by the thousandfold. You really should watch it. The first 13 episodes are kind of boring, but after that it gets really good :D

Yeah, I apologize to all the Fullmetal Alchemist fans for what I've said. I really only watched up until about the 50's in terms of episodes in the original, and left it at that, thinking it mediocre at best. I'll definitely put Brotherhood on my list of animes to watch, though.

Which makes this a good time to mention that I have the habit of only watching one anime at a time. I don't know how some people are able to watch two or three at the same time. I prefer to engross myself in one story as much as possible. Must be my ADD. XD

^ No, I really only thought the anime for Tsubasa was decent. The arc with the race got dragged out so long I was thoroughly bored by the end. The manga had it all, but didn't drag it out. I sincerely don't know how they managed to get so many episodes of the anime from so little in the manga.

What surprised me was that CLAMP disliked the anime so much they 'disowned' it, in a mater of speaking. That's how inferior they find it to the manga.

The xxxHolic anime cuts out all references to Tsubasa- which means that while it did get very far in the story, because a HUGE chunk of it is wrapped up in the Tsubasa timeline, you're missing a lot of the story. It is a more slow-paced series, but it does have its moments. It does not follow the Tusbasa series chapter-by-chapter. Tsubasa is 27 volumes long, xxxHolic is finally complete at 19. So xxxHolic moves faster.

Hm... Well... This kind of makes me unsure about what pace I should read the two at, though.

Action/romance is great! Um....Well, v. 1 of each should be read together. After that, read a few chapters of Tsubasa and then read some of xxxHolic. It's okay if they don't match up perfectly. V. 12-16 of xxxHolic tie in super-closely to v. 22-23-end of Tsubasa, just to give you a heads-up.

I know, right? Tenchi Muyo was interesting. I liked the Tenchi Universe series the best because of my tastes, but Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki was definitely better when it came to art style and the over all "this story is epic!" feeling.

...unless you're talking about a tenchi from a different anime, in which case I haven't heard of him (or her, if it happens to be a neutral name).

I'll be sure to ask if I need anything. You enjoyed Clannad, too, I'll assume from your avatar? I posted in the Clannad discussion thread when it was still somewhat fresh, but it sadly didn't get approved for something like 24-hours, so it didn't actually bump the topic up at all, sadly.

But anyway...

Hm... Guess I'll just do something like read 3 chapters each, and then use my judgement as I move forward. I'll be sure to keep those numbers in mind, though. Thanks!
