It seems to me that the crossover games will be more like extentions than direct ports, hopefully with a great deal of connectivity to the bigger platforms. And if not, they tried to fix the problems with the N-gage, so you could use that to get your mobile fix. :)

I don't plan on buying either one (even after seeing the E3 footage of each system), but if I do buy one, it will be the PSP? Why? Simply put, I want to see someone challenge Nintendo for control of the handheld gaming market.

In any case, I doubt that the future of gaming will depend upon portable systems. As gamers get older, there will be less of a market for portable systems, as they are really more for children (I haven't picked up my GBA in almost two years...). When you're a kind, you get to sit in the back seat of the car and play Gameboy. When you're an adult, you chauffer the kids who sit in the back and play Gameboy. However, I don't think that they will be playing Gameboy. They'll be too busy with the dvd player or true console built into the car. ;)

Maybe I'm wrong; but as console sales continue to rise, handhelds won't be as popular. On top of that, consoles will continue to become more powerful, forcing portable to have better graphics. Unfortunately portables have to contend with the problem of battery life, meaning that there is a limit on their power.

Any game made on GCN is going to be re-packaged and sold as a DS title. And the same goes for PSP. This is "STUPID" in my opinion. While it will make cash. It's just not the way of the Gamer. Re-buying all your PS2 games so you can play them on your Portable PS2...

First I've heard of that. No way a handheld could handle a GC game yet! All the games I've seen on DS may look similar to previously released games but they're not.

Actually, if I play games, it tends to be on my Palm Pilot (I can justify it since it has my medical databases and business stuff on it as well as some fun shoot'em'ups and card games). My next "media device" is probably going to be a Zire of some sort.

I think that connectivity will be the decisive factor (along with price) as to whether I get either. I mean, look at things like Harvest Moon, the Sims and Animal Crossing. The GBA connection opens up all kinds of new junk in the game. Imagine connecting your PSP to your FF12 and taking your characters to a whole new land. I also noticed IGN metioned that the DS has a slot for it's games and a slot for GB carts. If it has all the backwards compatability of the GBA, that definately earns a lot of points in my book.

Have you seen Metorid Prime Hunters? It looks practically like Metrod Prime for GC.... It's a very pretty game. The DS is incredibly impressive. I just hope it has L and R buttons. It looked like Start and Select are being replaced with the touch screen, so I can live without that, but not the L and R buttons.

I haven't seen much about the PSP... Is it 64 bit? I heard it was halfway in between PS1 and PS2 in power. That sounds really sweet. They'll probably remake Final Fantasy games for it... I would love to get both, but I'll have to find out the price... If it's 500 dollars, then probably not... Sorry, I heard wrong rumors... The new taco is only 200 dollars.

Yes L+R+Start and Select are still there. The Metroid game looks v nice, more N64y than GC, pixels are more visible in it, I don't care though. A handheld with N64 graphics is VERY impressive! this touch screen has possibilities.

In the case of Metroid:
A Shoots
B Jumps
R Locks on
Pad moves
L Activates Missiles/Power Bombs

TouchPad- Switch visors and beam weapons! As well as showing your map

I haven't really read through this thread... so sorry if I repeat someone.

Volt wrote:the PSP has the EXACT SAME GRAPHICS as a PS2... that's why it runs Grand Tourismo 4. DIdn't you guys read about it already? Have you looked at the specs..

DS = GAmecube mini
PSP = PS2 mini

Yes, It sounds like a lot of power in one little handheld. And that's what it is! Welcome to the tech world 2004...smaller technology, faster.

That's why I was worried about handhelds replacing Consoles. The DS and PSP have the same graphics capabilities as their console parents! So what about battery life... just plug in the AC adapter and pretend it's a console. Don't worry about controllers because all of them are Bluetooth or wireless... You can play in the same room as your freinds.

Heh.. your exaggerating the power of these handhelds greatly.... the companies truly wish they had that power but they don't. The PSP graphics are improved the Playstation and close to Dreamcast at the most. The DS graphics are improved from the N64 era.

This Grand Tourismo 4 you speak of is a handheld variation of it's sometime to be released console cousin.... it's not the PS2 version... they share the same base idea... but, they're not at all the same... the PSP version will be toned down... a lot. Trust me, you'll see a major difference when the games are released. The PSP is the strongest of the handhelds, but it can't come close to fully mimicking it's console counter part. Sony is very good marketing their product and the truth is stretched a lot to lurer in the prospective purchaser. It worked out well for them them past, so why would they stop now?

These handheld don't have what it takes to overthrough the console market. Both are in the 64-bit graphics for the last generation Nintendo and Sony consoles.

From the information we're getting now, I don't think I can make a decision on whether the DS or PSP are purchase worthy. They've both got a whole lot of potential, but I guess it really depends on what the companies decide to do with them. If they're direct ports, like Volt said, then they'll just be a waste of money. We'll just have to wait and see.

Sorry if I repeated anybody^^

I'm gonna get me a DS. Backwards compatibility is one of Nintendo's handhelds strengths. I'll be able to play my older games AND cool new ones like Metroid hunters!

It ain't gonna happen. Gaming follows a pattern. 16-32-64-128-256.

16bit is GBA/SP. 32bit would probably be N-Gage. Next up is 64. Anyway even just looking at the screenshots shows that the handhelds are nowhere near their console cousins!

The PSP (Playstation portable? I dunno^^) is a portable gaming system from Sony. The DS (dual screen) is a portable gaming system from Nintendo.

There is a good chance that I will get both. Especially with all of the support both handhelds seem to have.

Although, I am more interested in the DS at the moment.

Well I got the oppritunity to play both at E3 and all I have to say I am not impressed at all with the DS. The PSP did surprise me a bit it has a very nice screen and metal gear acid was just amazing. Graphics wise PSP look allot like first gen PS2 games and DS looked like 64 games. The DS touch screen was nice but seem rather pointless O well. I not big in to hanheld gaming so I prob wont pick up neither one but if I was it be the PSP

I heard somewhere that the PSP is going to be around the $300-$400 range...that's kinda out of my budget...I dunno about the DS, but the PSP seems to be targeted toward "older" gamers.

$300-$400!? Thats about £200-£250... No way it's gonna be that dear! I'd say about £150 ($225) tops! and that's just its opening price, it'll drop fairly quickly.

One thing I saw metioned that the DS had a slot for GB carts, making me think that if the DS takes off, it will be the next GB (despite Nintendo's claims to the contrary).

N-gage has a lot of bad press to shed, either it will rise above it or sink to the bottom of the annuls of gaming history, along with the Virtual boy.
PSP has the best shot of giving Nintendo a run for thier money.
I've never heard of the Zodiac or GamePark, but that doesn't mean a whole lot.

Looking back at history, we see that the industry has gone from supporting one home system (after Nintendo beat out the Sega Master system and SNES edging out the Genesis) to two systems (N64 and PS1) and now three systems (PS2, 'Cube, X-box). The companies are seeing if the handheld market is ready to support more than one system as it has for years, and if it is, they all want to be that second system.

According to a recent Reuters report, Nintendo stated last week that the limited supply of LCD screens available for the Nintendo DS is expected to hurt the profits of the recently announced handheld--at least during its initial sales period. The most unique feature of the Nintendo DS is that it features dual LCD screens to deliver a somewhat unique gameplay experience. However, even Nintendo's main LCD supplier, Sharp, has conceded that meeting the demand for the system's launch might pose a problem.

"Ordinarily, if we said to a supplier that we plan to make a product with two screens, they would be happy. But this time they said, 'Two screens. That's a bit of a challenge,'" commented Iwata during last week's Electronic Entertainment Expo. "Of course, we have no intention of taking a huge loss in the beginning, but I'm not sure if we can efficiently boost profit from the start like we did with the Game Boy Advance. But this is something, I think, we can repair with time."

i dunno if i would do that, if they dont have the light when they first release it, it might be better to wait until they make one with a light, they other one's price will then drop dramaticly. is microsoft really goingto make a handheld system? maybe they'll just make a xbox controller with a light-up screen and a place to hold the data... but that would be just like the PSP and PS2. maybe i'll just wait for XboxNext (Xenon)
