With the rash of new threads which feature mispellings (or misspellings, depending on who you ask) prominently in their very title, I feel the passive-aggressive need to make a poll about spelling.

Personally, I think spelling is fairly important, especially when so much of our communication is written. However, I know some people aren't very good at it by nature.

Still, I think it's important to observe good spelnig habits.

For me, it's pretty important. I try to not misspell. I have. But I try not to. And when it's in titles of a thread? That's when it's most important. Goodness knows we don't want a discussion about bears when we mean beards! (though that was an awesome conversation)

Spelling (and grammar!) are extremely important to me. I always proof-read anything I type. Sometimes errors slip through, but they drive me nuts. If I catch them, I always edit the post and correct them.

The misuse of to/too, etc. drives me insane. Like I can't stand it. As a Moderator on another forum, I'm often found crawling upon seeing errors and it takes everything within me not to "clean" posts and sign it "your friendly neighborhood grammar patrol Wolf-Mod" or something.

I make every effort to spell things correctly. If something slips through I'll usually edit my post and correct it. Thankfully my OS has universal spell check, so 9 times out of 10 I'll get a notice that I spelled something wrong. Only time it doesn't work is if I spelled a different word on accident.

Another thing that kills me is text speak. Not necessarily l33t sp33k as that's a different beast. Bt rdng evrytng speld lke ths is annyng. It's like "VOWELS ARE NOT NEEDED!"

I'll apologize now because I know I am one of these people. I've never been good at grammar and even when I proof-read things I STILL make mistakes. So sorry if I drive anyone up the wall with my spelling. Really not sure how to improve my grammar skills at this point in life.

I'm a bit of a hypocrite on this. I claim spelling is important and I usually practice this belief:In places where chatspeek is used, I use proper English. However, I misspell words on purpose to be funneh. It's complicated...

Correct spelling is very important to me. I give leeway if English isn't a person's first language or they have dyslexia (the latter of which I also have). But I hate it when people are just lazy.

I want there to be an option that's a little below "Very Important", being that it's generally important to try to spell things right, but a typo or two is forgivable, particularly in realtime chat situations; and if it takes you more effort to spell than it's worth (i.e. you're actually dyslexic), I will be understanding of that.

Note also that intentional misspellings I do not consider to be misspellings, since you spelled the word exactly the way you intended to.

Typos I can forgive. Improper grammar and lack of punctuation at the end of sentences are things that get under my skin.

Yes, I would prefer everything to be spelled correctly, have perfect grammar, uphold proper punctuation rules, and have good diction. Yet, let's be honest because this world is not perfect, I shouldn't expect peoples' grammar to be spotless (Including mine because late at night I get very sloppy. XDD).


However, because I want to reach and to connect to others, it really doesn't matter to me.

I'm thinking more and more I'm dyslexic as I have a hard time typing d's, p's, g's, b's, and q's and often meaning to type one letter, might type one of the other four instead. Or I'll be thinking one thing and typing either something that is obviously NOT a word or a different word all together. When that happens for an entire sentence (especially in class) it gets frustrating. My class notes get heavily edited as I'm sitting there, typing them out.

No one would really notice this in my writing unless they were to see it raw, though.

I try to spell things correctly, all the time. As a writer, I want my writing (all of it) to look presentable. If I make a post and afterward realize I misspelled something, I'll edit and fix it. Punctuation and grammar are of course important to me as well. But these things don't bother me when someone else messes them up, as long as I know what the person meant.

However, "AKA" doesn't mean "for example" or "that is". It's an abbreviation for "also known as". "E.g." means "for example"; i.e. means "that is".

I don't exactly rage when I see that, but it's irksome. XD

Agree with this. Overall I think spelling and grammar is pretty important. There are exceptions, though ^___^ I know I can be pretty lazy when it comes to capitalisation.

I also think there is a pretty big difference between online communication (like in chats), and actual writing. I'm going to be a lot more picky about spelling and grammar if I'm reading a story or article than if I'm interacting with someone on a message board or over IM.

The biggest spelling issue I run in to is that I went to school abroad. So, I tend to use English spelling (colour, centre, realise, analyse, etc) as opposed to American English spelling (color, center, realize, analyze, etc).

I'm most afraid if using the wrong word that spell check doesn't catch. For example, writing fiend instead of friend, calling my friend Chris, Christ D:

I've used those spellings for years, but only went abroad about two years ago. I'm so strange! xD

I wish you had an option of just "Important but not critically so," as I do find spelling important but it is common for someone to mess up a few words or two. But yeah, it is important for someone to use grammar usually. I usually do it unless I take notes (thus, I use abbreviations: b/c, w/ or w/o, etc.) or send quick messages to friends (lol, rofl, nvm, etc.) for conveniance sake.

I've been a good speller my entire life. I guess I don't get what's so hard about spelling words properly. However, I sometimes don't capitalize properly in text messages if I'm in a hurry, because my phone doesn't have an intuitive interface.

Misuse of apostrophes is one of those things that irritates the crap out of me. Just because a word ends in "s" doesn't mean the "s" always needs to have an apostrophe in front of it! Mix-ups of "its" and "it's" bug me too, but that one's kind of confusing anyway so it's not as big of a deal, I guess.

Though I do try to be conscious of spelling and whatnot, I don't have a problem with contractions, but I do however have a problem with people saying something like "You spelled Colour wrong, it should be spelled C-o-l-o-r" I understand you have a way of spelling it, but I live in Canada, so we have a few words that are not the same.

It is correct, in this case, for the period to go outside the parentheses, because the parentheses are inside the sentence. Note that the question mark in the second pair of parentheses is correct to go inside the parentheses, since those parentheses are not in a sentence. I generalize that rule to apply to quotes as well, but many grammaticians insist that punctuation always goes inside quotes no matter what (which I think is crazy).

And also, "(IE: Classwork)" is incorrect. It should be "(i.e. classwork)". [/grammarnazi]

I can relate a lot to that Topaz. I tried to improve my grammar, but still it's difficult for me.

For me, I do prefer that people at least type in proper English that TaLkin l3ik dis!!11!! Typing proper english shows that people can treat you mature instead of some typical 12 year old who tries to be cool.
I do some mistakes in writing, but good thing I have a spellcheck.
If someone misspelled a word, I could understand it;I wouldn't make a big deal over it even if they do grammatical mistakes.

But then...This is the internet, so it's not like it's english class; Why stress over it?

In short, so longs people can understand me and I understand them, it's cool for me. It's like expressing yourself.

Spelling is of some important in almost all medium. In a place like this, where the talk is casual, spelling errors aren't too big of a deal - it's like throwing in double negatives when we have a casual conversation. As such, I almost never proofread posts, even though a huge part of my job (and ALL of my part-time job) involves proofing. Still, too many errors, even in casual writing, is distracting and hinder communication.

Spelling is very important to me. If I'm reading something on the computer, such as my brother's writing on Facebook, I get really annoyed. Really, really annoyed. Even though he's only 10. Same goes for reading fanfiction; I can't stand it when an author has terrible spelling and/or grammar. I blame being a perfectionist.

If you want to be taken seriously, you should probably proof-read your work. However, I realize we can get away with intentional misspellings, such as text-talk. But doing it too much may result in u 4getting ur grammar.

I think spelling, grammar and punctuation are highly important. At work, your work is divided up for someone else to check, so I kind of have the reputation of being the grammar nazi. Some people's comma splicing is so bad that I've basically given up on them though (like every sentence contains three)....
