What anime are you watching?

Oh yeah, I'm rewatching Zeta Gundam. I am on episode 11. I did not like this show all that much the first time I watched it but it is like a Shakespearean masterpiece compared to SEED.

Finished watching Gun X Sword for a review a little while ago, and just watched Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (wasn't too bad, I'd probably appreciate it more if I had played the game haha!)

I've also seen a bit of Gunslinger Girls too, which I thought was pretty good in terms of story and exploring certain themes and aspects to it but perhaps a little too on the sad side for me (that is, with the whole thing about kids being turned into weapons and whatnot)

Otherwise, just trying to find something else that's good to watch!

Tatami Galaxy - Complete

So, I really missed out last year. I have no idea why I didn't watch this show when it was coming out, but,without trying to sound like James Lipton, it was truly a delight. This was my first Masaki Yuasa work to see, and I'm now a big, big fan.

I don't really watch a lot of anime comedies these days, mostly because I feel like I'd see the same six jokes over and over in every one of them; however, the humor was really fresh and clever. It felt like Yuasa was trying to appeal to more of a sophisticated sense of humor, rather than hot spring -> boobs -> nosebleed. Maybe a more Western sense of humor? Whatever way you slice it, there was much lol-ing on my part.

The visuals were also quite innovative. Like the comedy, very fresh and generally atypical for the genre. Perhaps I'm just used to this sort of thing, but the surreal nature of the art, backgrounds and animation didn't put me off at all. TG is one of those works that I don't think could be made in any other medium than animation; it's just the only way to tell the story Yuasa wants to tell in the way he wants to tell it. He takes lots of chances visually, and they really pay off.

The show isn't just for laughs. It also has a(n important) message to get across. Without getting into specifics, I'll just say that not since 5 Centimeters Per Second has a show made me step back and reflect on how important the people in my life actually are to me. The final plot moves were quite unpredictable, and the ending itself was wonderful. Very heart-warming stuff. Couldn't stop smiling during the last ten or so minutes. Highly, highly recommended for those that can handle innuendo and mature situations.

Just finished Haibane Renmei...WOW. I gave up on it a while ago because after five episodes, so little had happened. Other convinced me to go back to it, and I glad I ever did. I've seen very few shows, anime or otherwise, that so powerfully show the weight of sin, the power of grace, and the beauty of redemption.

Amazing series.

Gun X Sword, because I'm a certifiable addict when it comes to this show

I'm also sporadically watching Samurai Champloo and Speed Grapher. I don't particularly like either of them, but I got invested enough in both to want to see how they end. It's probably going to take me a long time to finish, because I only watch them when I'm bored.

Been rewatching Ghost Hunt. Still has great creepy/suspenseful intro music, and I like the dub better this time around. But I just don't like that on dude's Aussie accent! It's a good one, but the voice is too 'old' for the character. I was also annoyed by one child's voice- it was pretty obvious they had a grown-up inhaling helium for that one.

I've been on a bit of an "awesomely bad" kick lately. Just watched Odin:Starlight Mutiny and In The Aftermath: Angels Never Sleep.

Odin was pretty much your average late-80's big-budget feature: heavy on nifty designs and cool animation, light on character development and actual plot (which was just a cheep Space Battleship Yamato ripoff anyway) Oh, and lots of hair metal.

In The Aftermath, though... where do I even begin? It was New World Pictures' attempt to edit Mamoru Oshii's Angel's Egg into something resembling a conventional story... which somehow involved adding 40 MINUTES OF LIVE ACTION FOOTAGE. The results are... astounding (the thing's been out of print for ages, but it's all on YouTube if you're brave enough)

Oy...

Finally finished the ENTIRE Ranma 1/2 Franchise... eps, OVAs, and movies, near the end of December.

Watched Interstella 5555 and Akira before starting my January Anime Viewing Schedule.

Start of the month saw me kickoff and complete Baccano!, and catch up with Hetalia World Series.

Now watching: Durarara!! and Code Geass.

Also, two weeks ago, went into Excel and projected the Anime Viewing Schedule all the way into the end of June. Should keep me busy for awhile. I'll keep y'all posted.

I just finished Fruits Basket. I loved that show. The ending was really great and really heartfelt. I cried a little bit at several parts. (yes and I am not ashamed to admit that) It was a very cute (if I'm allowed to use that word) show and I highly recommended it to anyone.

I also have been watching Shiki. Freaking...awesome!!!!!! I love every minute of that show. It is so good. Classic Vampire stuff plus a great Horror tone to the show equals one heck of a ride. I am very excited to continue the show.

...wow, I had the exact opposite reaction. I felt the ending to the Fruits Basket anime was so completely awful and wretched that despite loving the series up until that point, the ending made me hate the anime completely.

Fortunately the manga is about a billion times better.

I'm sort-of with Nate there. The ending was so incomplete that, as heartfelt as it was, it didn't answer or resolve anything.

I'm reading the manga, and I definitely prefer it.

Where I do agree that I would like to see more I still liked it. I want to read the manga. Should I start from the beginning or can I just pick up from where the anime leaves off?

Beginning. THere are some characters in it that weren't introduced in the anime... and some things are different overall.

What we have here is top-tier shounen stuff. For the first 50 or so episodes, rather than attempting to subvert or transcend the genre, HnG squeezes the shounen sponge for all its worth. It covers all the bases you'd expect from a show of its kind, but HnG just nails the execution. A board game never seemed so intense, so dramatic. You really can't help but be sucked in by the great directing. Also, the show is supposedly a fairly honest reflection of the actual world of professional Go in Japan.

From about episode 35 onwards, HnG hints at much beneath the surface. Then, in the 50s, the show takes an unexpected turn; there is a distinct tonal shift, and the anime begins to deal with mature psychological and emotional issues in a pretty competent way. Quite surprising. Ultimately, however, HnG does not forget what it fundamentally is: pure, addictive fun.

I would recommend it to anime fans of all stripes, even if they typically hate shounen series.

10/10 for me, but probably 9/10 for most.

Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ thru ep. 10: I have loved, absolutely loved the first ten episodes of this. Therefore, am scared to watch any further...New story arc to start, and yeah. I don't trust anime in general to actually, well, follow through with awesome. Here's hoping.
