Is this weird?

Postby dothackzero » Wed Dec 22, 2010 9:14 pm

So I just finished watching Welcome to the N.H.K. The main girl in the series said that God is evil. For some reason it literally hurt like someone in real life said. I just don't get why it bugs me so much even though it was just an anime...

I don't think it's wierd at all. I mean, it would hurt whether you read it or heard it in anime or in real life. It's a strong negative statement that you don't agree with- and hits home because it's something you believe in. It's okay to feel upset about it.

Have you ever dealt with a statement like that in a book you read or in real life?

Actually, I've never heard something that bad before about God. Atleast from what I remember...

I don't think it's weird at all. Pretty much for the same reason Atria said.

If someone says something you dissagree with, it'll effect you in some way, whether it was said in fiction or not.

Then it's also a new experience. You'll find that it's not an uncommon, necessarily, viewpoint. Look at the circumstances that is was said under, and see if you might be able to see where she was coming from with that statement, what would prompt her to say it.

"The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case." - Chuck Close[/color]

I dislike hearing negative things about my religion in any form of entertainment. Especially since despite being able to get around it with the thought, "It's just that character's opinion." it's usually a thought from the author's mind as well, so it tends to impact everyone else in the show at the time.

It's nice when a show has characters with multiple opinions or manages to clearly show some don't support a negative opinion [on Christianity or about God], but that's extremely rare.

Atleast if any negative statements about religion are made, they're usually spread pretty thin to avoid upsetting viewers who may disagree with the opinion in question.

It's still pretty annoying though. NHK was depressing enough and they didn't really need to throw it in, but coming from Misaki she obviously felt really betrayed. If Misaki didn't state it as a fact it would have been easier to get around.

I agree. And sadly, you're right, character's statements do reflect the author's point of view. But that's the way of the world. ... Not that I'd put up with it. (I refuse to watch Inception because of the blaspheme friends told me was in it)

Wait wait wait, blasphemy in Inception? Care to quote what you heard?

I don't recall anything anti-Christian in Inception and even Plugged in Online's review states, "... Inception steers well clear of overt religion or faith, its surreal, metaphysical environs throw viewers into a world that actually feels quite spiritual... " which is different from being directly off-putting.

Unless the idea of having to die to wake up easily while in a dream feels disturbing, I can't remember anything else to be too wary of... There was a lack of blood too despite the shooting and (dream) violence.

I mean, yes, depending on your views perhaps Inception might still be something to avoid, but I'm interested to hear what you have heard about it.

Wow. Seriously? Some people use God's name in vain several times (less than many movies). I'm not saying it's a good thing but that's not a great to avoid seeing Inception. Other than that, there is very little inappropriate content.

I don't think it's weird. I get insulted and upset when I hear or read someone saying anything about God like that.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

NIV, Romans 8:38-39.

I believe they're talking about using the name of God in vain, which is also blasphemy.

Under "Crude or Profane Language" we have:

Characters abuse Jesus' name five or six times and God's a dozen times—pairing it with "d‑‑n" another half-dozen. We also hear "a‑‑," "h‑‑‑," "b‑‑tard" and "bloody."
Blessed be the LORD my strength which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:
My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.

Falx pinned the tail on the donkey, there.
I can't quote the movie for you, sorry guys, 'cause I didn't actually watch it myself (for various reasons, the mentioned of which being one of them).

Every time I hear someone say bad against God, I feel a pit opening beneath my feet. The thoughts too horrible. Like standing on your own grave and laughing horrible. Feels bad, man.
I still don't understand anything!

it's not weird to be hurt about that. i've heard a lot of people say things like that. it's hard to hear bad things about something that is so close and personal. like Atria said it's ok to be upset about it.

interestingly, when the author via the character says that God is evil they are admitting that God actually exists. most people just go off and say God doesn't exist. anyhow, maybe i'm reading too much into it.
