Rewatched the first two episodes of Spice and Wolf with a dear friend last night. =) It still makes me extremely happy for its whimsical qualities. =)

Also planning to watch the first Kara no Kyoukai movie today, but we shall see if that actually happens.

Prefectural Earth Defense Force - Complete

Eh.

This 80s comedy/spoof OVA got a lot of hype on my corner of the net, but I didn't find it to be all that great. I dunno...maybe anime that is 100% comedic is not for me.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha the MOVIE 1st is something that I've been waiting for for almost a year now. Being a remake of a 2004 show, it really shows. The first season of Nanoha had a lot of stuff that could be removed and streamlined into a two hour movie. What's left is tightly paced, even if it's not that most earth-shattering story in the world. Where Nanoha shines is in its action sequences which is on par with equivalent mecha productions (OVAs and theatrical films). I sure had a huge dumb smile every time a DIVIIIIIIIIIINE BUSTAAAAAAAAAAAAAA was shot.

Just finished 'The Law of Ueki' anime. A series of magic and laws but keeps its head about itself to were the limits are actually a main player instead of 'It just happens'. Plus the ending almost (Almost) made me cry.

Kino's Journey is one of those must-watch anime, just for the experience. It's slow but incredibly thought-provoking/philisophical. I really hope that you finish it.

Rewatched The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Still awesome.

It's part of a project thingy I'm doing, so I kind of have to finish it...not that I'm not enjoying it so far. :)

Ahhh, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time! Soooooo good! I think it may be the only non-Ghibli anime I've watched with my wife which she also enjoyed.

Could you tell me what the movie's like? I saw that there was such a thing, but it looked kinda weird and I wasn't sure if it was any good. From what you've seen, how does it compare to the anime?

I watched Lovely Complex episode 11 last night, and now I'm watching Princess Mononoke with my sisters, who were always too young to see it before (they still kind of lurched and got grossed out when Ashitaka shoots that one guy's arms completely off). I'd forgotten how beautifully drawn it is. Though I don't care for the story at all, I really ought to give this movie more credit for how pretty it is.

Serei no Moribito - Complete

This is going to sound blasphemous, but I found the show to be a tad bit overrated.

*dodges whipped batteries*

Ahem.

Yeah, at times in the middle third the show really dragged. Plus, I felt like there was a ton of untapped potential with the world-building and mythology. Sure, we were getting an aspect of it, but the world felt so much bigger, and we were forced to wear blinders. Now, on the plus side, the animation was gorgeous (Production I.G....you guys...), and THE ENDING. Those last three episodes were fantastic.

I just hope that any CAAers who haven't seen it don't fall victim to the Moribito hype machine. I was expecting something unparalleled but only got something good (Hey blkmage, how 'bout those Eden of the East movies?). 12 Kingdoms does the ancient Chinese schtick a bit better and is deeper/more well-developed; however it does lack an actual ending. And again, Moribito's actual final episodes are awesome. Truncate the series in the remake.

Yeah, I think that's how I felt about Moribito. What I found refreshing about it was an empire that wasn't populated by villains and the eastern fantasy style of the whole thing. The beginning and ending were surefine, but that middle was definitely slow. It's pretty good, so I think you're underselling it as if it were something to be avoided. But the reason the world wasn't as explored is likely because of its roots as the first in a series of about ten novels, which involve Balsa's travels to other places.

This.
blkmage wrote:and the eastern fantasy style of the whole thing.
Have you seen 12 Kingdoms? It has the same trapping but is better IMO. I think you'd like it a lot. That series was also based on a series of, I think twelve, light novels. The anime covers the first four and ends with an absolute glut of unresolved issues.
blkmage wrote:The beginning and ending were surefine, but that middle was definitely slow.
Yup.
magey wrote:I think you're underselling it as if it were something to be avoided.
Agh! Didn't intend to communicate that the show ought to be bypassed. Looks like the EoE movie issue all over again, eh? I just wanted to point out that high expectations dampened the enjoyment of it for me and not to get carried away before going in. It is a legit good show for sure, though not a masterpiece and not the best of its genre IMO.

I thought that the movie was pretty descent, it made me decide to watch the anime, which I'm only 10 eps in so I can't tell you completely how much they line up. But if you keep in mind that it's Japanese and that there are some non-anime characters it's actually pretty descent.

Also I'm up to ep 10 of Lovely Complex, and 9 of Peace Maker.

I haven't watched more than a handful of episodes of Moribito (although I enjoyed what I saw), but I have read the novel. It's...pretty short. They should probably have either made it a movie, or animated more than the first book.

Just finished Lovely Complex...It was pretty fun. I think I need to watch a dark shounan or seinan show to make up for all the shoujoieness...But I'm actually thinking of watching Honey and Clover next.

Turns out I misjudged Index season two. While there is indeed a slight bit more fanservice than the first season, it's not even close to Railgun levels.

The plotting is much better, the already good animation got a boost and the right reverend Touma's sermons are much shorter.

And accelerator is awesome as usual.
