Christian Anime and Manga Thread

Postby Yeshua » Sun Aug 29, 2010 11:49 pm

Anime today is the most popular animation style in this days, in the same way Manga is the most popular Comic style, often Secular, Anime/Manga Has their share of Christian Stories.

Let's Begin, I will give a little Talk about Every anime/manga christian series I know.

Anime:

Super book
Image

Produced by Tatsunoko Productions in Japan in conjunction with the Christian Broadcasting Network in the United States.

Plot:
Christopher Peepers (Sho Azuka) Discovers a talking Magical bible (Superbook) that sends him, his friend Joy (Azusa Yamato) and his Toy Robot Gizmo (Zenmaijikake) Back in time to witness events depicted on the Holy Bible, The Anime covers popular stories from the old testament and new testament with made up argument (For the kids beign there).

My Thoughs:
I watched this as a kid and it's good, The history alone makes you wish you were those kids to witness the miracles of God, it's a child anime, but it's good and worth watching.

In the Begining - The Bible Stories
Image

Created by Osamu Tezuka, In the Beginning features episodes devoted to most of the major Bible stories of the Old Testament, including the stories of the Creation, Cain and Abel, Noah's Ark, Abraham and Isaac, Joseph, Moses, David, and Solomon, with the final episode featuring the birth of Jesus Christ.

Unlike Superbook and The Flying House, however, no contemporary characters from modern times were inserted into the stories, save for the series mascot and viewpoint character, Roco the fox

My Thoughs:
I really recommend this one, It tries to capture the maturity of the bible stories, Though I would recommend to watch this along a bible or someone with a strong knowledge of the Bible since some things are kind of.... Made up, There are some flaws in the argument,There are some changes compared to the bible, some minor, some major.

Animated Stories from the Old and New Testament
Image

"This is not an anime, but it's an obligued for me to put it here"

Animated Stories from the Old and New Testament is a video series produced by Nest Family Entertainment in association with Rich Animation Studios.

Unlike other animated series based on Bible stories, these programs are not based on modern characters interacting with Biblical figures, but rather provide dramatic retelling of the Bible stories themselves.

The series was created to be a non-denominational informative and educational tool to help parents, caregivers, and educators instill positive spiritual values and character traits to those in their care.

The Series tell the most beautiful stories from both the Old and New testament, The series is not linear, it features twenty-four stories from the New Testament, including many of the parables of Jesus, the story of his birth, death and resurrection. The series concludes with two episodes about Paul the Apostle and his missionary journeys.

My Thoughs:
THIS ONE'S EXTREMELY RECOMMENDED!!!

By now, though it's not anime, in my humble opinion, there's no greater Christian Animation series that this one, Every single detail in this Series is well cared, the episodes are so full of feeling and love that you will most likely cry in the middle or in the end of an episode,

Here are some shorts for your delight

These are the Only Christian Anime I've bumped into, now let's move to MANGA!!

Manga:

Manga Messiah
Image

The First book in the series of Manga Bible, tells the story of the 4 Gospels of: Mathew, Mark, Luke and John in a very fresh manga style, there's biblical references in every page, every chapter in the bible is scripted at the botton of each page so it's easier to compare it to the Scriptures.

My Thoughts:
I fell In love with this the day I saw it, It helped me a lot in my relationship with God, it's the first manga i've cried with. the way some miracles are shown here.. Just awesome!

Manga Metamorphosis:
Image

Second book in the series of Manga Bible, Covers the story from Jesus' Ascension to the Death of Paul (Only mentioned, book ends where Acts ends)
along with Chibi Style illustrated Letters of Paul. Art quality has gotten better from Manga Messiah, much better color, much better Drawings.

My Thoughs:
The sequel of Manga Messiah proved to be as amazing as it's prequel, or maybe even more, This Manga Was a huge step forward in Christian Manga just like Manga Messiah was, Second Manga I cried with. Events are depicted with more maturity than Messiah, showned even in Action scenes where Blood was increased in Comparison to it's prequel, Touching in every way, Helpful in every way, a True Evangelism Tool worthy of Praising God's name.

Manga Mutiny
Image

Third Book in the Series of Manga Bible, Depicts events from Lucifer's Rebellion, to the Crossing of the Red Sea, Artwork has changed for there's another artist, Ryo Azumi takes the place of Kozumi Shinozawa's Shonen Style taking it to a Shojo Style.

My Thoughts:
LOVED IT, The Artwork is really nice, Follows the Scripture as good as it's prequels, another success in the Manga Bible Series, Design for characters is good, Though the Art style may seem more mature than Messiah and Metamorphosis, there's not much blood in it and some Strong scenes have been either toned down or Simply Cut off.

Manga Melech
Image

Fourth Book in the Manga Bible Series, Depicts the Story from the Crossing of the Red sea, to the promised land, To the era of King David and Solomon, Same artist of Mutiny.

My Thoughs:
I can't give and straight opinion for this one, since I haven't bought it yet, but one thing I know it looks very promising, both in Art, and by a quick look at the bible, the events are gonna be EPIC.

Shelter of Wings
Image

A Christian Manga created by Lisa Hutchinson (Angelsnow in This forum ^^)
Tells the story of Jeena Ruth Hadleigh, an Unstable Christian Girl and her brother Sam, while at the same time giving a perpective over the constant Battles of Angels and Demons.

My Thoughs:
One word.... AWESOME!! This manga is great, great story, great characters, many of the argument created for Angels and demons are Ficticious, making it perfect for non believers, It is also good for Believers because many of the situations The Main Character suffers are common in many Christian Lives. personally, it helped me very much.

That's all Guys, that's all the Christian Manga and Anime I can talk about now (All the ones I've watched and read XD)

There's one last thing...

There's this manga Called "Jesus" Scripted and Illustrated by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko.... Don't ever read it.... It's a book made by the devil to insult Lord Jesus, I took a look at it, and go directly to the last pages.... In the end, The Jesus in this manga is nothing more than a Liar, he doesn't rise from the dead, and some of his followers take his body, one injured kid disguises himself as an angel and tells to mary he resurrected, the Jesus depicted in this book just tells lies and lies, and died like a sinner, the kid who followed him died after they took the body away, leaving only suffering and betrayal in the end of the story.... Worst manga ever made, not even the art is good

JinLi is an amaglamation of both the author's names. The Li part is for Lisa. But she's missing the other author's name- Jin.

Should 'Shelter of Wings' count as manga since it was made by people who aren't Japanese? And don't live in Japan?

I also think that calling one of those as 'made by the devil' a little.... inflammatory. It may represent Chritianity, but that's not uncommon in anime and manga. That's probably the case- the person probably has no information on Christianity and thought the names were cool and used them. I've seen this happen with Norse mythology and other religions in America.... but I wouldn't say those works are evil.

Well, it may sound harsh.
But really in actuality, anything that is not "for" God is against God, and it could give people the wrong idea and the wrong impression of who God really is. And that's not good.

I mean, it's going to happen. But that doesn't mean we should be supportive of it or call it "okay" or "good". Just because somebody doesn't really know what their talking about, doesn't mean that it's okay for them to be that way.

Though, we shouldn't expect people to interpret things correctly, if their non-believers. Even so, it gives Christianity a bad picture.

It's the same with the books "The Golden Compass", and the "Da Vinci Code."
They're a skewed vision of what Christianity is.

Also why I kinda had a problem with Haibane-Renmei. Because while the content of the story and idea of the story was unique and clever. I didn't like the whole story behind the story, like how the Haibane came to being. Like God making a mistake. Because that gives a skewed vision of who God really is... Even though it's just a story. I'm sure I'm not the only person that finds it a bit strange, and could cause other people to bring up even more weird beliefs about God, instead of the actual truth.

And again, I know you can't make someone who doesn't really know about God, speak about God how He really is, but that still doesn't make it dangerous to other people who have little to knowledge about God as well.
