Finals are done so that means going through some old shows! But first, Ghibli:
Only Yesterday is another one of those Ghibli movies that feels like Ocean Waves and Whisper of the Heart. Unfortunately, Only Yesterday doesn't really resonate with me. I can see what it's trying to do, because the message it's trying to get across is very similar to, say, Solanin. But, me and it are not just on the same wavelength. It's certainly interesting.
The Cat Returns was also pretty interesting. Also, I guess this was like, hey, let's see if we can come up with a story based on that cat statue from Whisper of the Heart. It was fun, if a little short and simplistic. Actually, it feels like a Disney movie, where you have a girl getting tricked into going to this fantasy land and getting saved by a suave cat or whatever.
Princess Tutu is really good. It starts off as your typical magical girl show, except instead of magical girl battles, you've got ballet battles. Once it gets into the real story, though, it has twists and subversions on your standard fairy tale and is actually fairly meta (I put a story in your story so you can write a story about your story). The ending was pretty great.
Ayakashi is a short collection of classic Japanese horror stories, which explains why I wasn't very captivated by them, I guess. The best arc was the Bake Neko arc, if only because of the Medicine Seller being the awesome Ginko equivalent and the trippy art style.
