As far as male seiyuu go, it is very incomplete, though I do think that Nakata Jouji was mentioned...hmmm. I'll be back.

*back from listening to it again* Huh. Guess I was wrong, though I could have sworn I heard his name before. But I didn't hear Daisuke Namikawa, Miyano Mamoru or Jun Fukuyama either (and I could go on and on) and those are really well known. Especially the last 2. Of course, this could have been written before they became famous. I believe they are all rather "recently" - i.e. within the last 5 years or so - popular. Though that certainly wouldn't explain Jouji Nakata.

2. Endou Aya (遠藤綾)

ImageImage

Endou Aya is relatively new. She's been doing minor roles for a few years, but it wasn't until 2007 that she really hit it big, playing the role of the meganekko of the four main girls in Lucky Star, Takara Miyuki. You'd think that she'd be outshone by Hirano Aya (Konata) and Katou Emiri (Kagami), but she definitely performed well, even in a less outspoken role.

A year later, she landed her biggest role yet, Sheryl Nome, the intergalactic popstar and one of the leading ladies of Macross Frontier, the 25th anniversary Macross title. Sheryl is a very different character from Miyuki. While Miyuki was soft-spoken and slightly airheaded, Sheryl is someone who exudes confidence and pride and is later is a girl who nearly loses everything.

However, unlike her co-star Nakajima Megumi, singing doesn't seem like it's one of her strong points, as all of her songs in Macross Frontier are handled by May'n. Or maybe she didn't have the voice for what they wanted out of Sheryl's songs. Well, you can take a listen to Miyuki's character song and decide for yourself, I guess.

Since then, she's been receiving a number of roles, with her bigger ones being Felicia Heideman from So Ra No Wo To, the first of TV Tokyo's Anime no Chikara projects, and Kajika Louisa Kugami Burnsworth, the main character of Hanasakeru Seishounen.

Major Roles
Lucky Star (Takara Miyuki)
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (Kinue Crossroad)
Macross Frontier (Sheryl Nome)
My-Otome 0~S.ifr~ (Lena Sayers)
Neo Angelique Abyss (Angelique)
Sekirei (Matsu)
Sora Kake Girl (Kannagi Itsuki)
Kanamemo (Minami Yuuki)
Hanasakeru Seishounen (Kajika Louisa Kugami Burnsworth)
Needless (Cruz Schild/Yamada)
So-Ra-No-Wo-To (Felicia Heideman)

blkmage (post: 1415486) wrote:Pretty much this. The list itself is probably heavily weight towards popularity and probably contains a healthy dose of recency bias. Also, the list will be incomplete because there are obviously more than 151 notable seiyuu in the business and it's based on the Japanese equivalent of the Pokérap.

Also, I thought about finding voice samples, but realized that I already spend an inordinate amount of time just finding suitable pictures and thinking about things to say, so finding or creating video is probably not going to be a cost-effective way of spending my time.
Ah, thanks. This answers all of my questions. I appreciate your efforts towards generating discussion on the anime board.

As for the list lacking Jouji Nakata, I am only really disappointed because that is the only VA I really go out of my way to listen to (and is the only Japanese VA I can recognize, actually). I am a bit surprised that he wasn't included though, with such star roles such as Alucard from Hellsing and The Count from Gankutsuou.

Dang it, again with someone I haven't heard. In fact, I've never heard her, as opposed to the one episode of Haruhi I saw a while ago.

Darn... Got in too late. I like Aya, as well as her English Counterpart (well, the girl who did Haruhi and Konata) and I'd never heard of the other girl. Guess it's because I'm indifferent about Miyuki. (It's Patty and the green haired girl I really don't like) The only other one of those shows I've even seen is Macross Frontier.

As for Aya's fans... Getting upset because she likes older guys? Really? Isn't that, you know, normal? What were they expecting? Japanese Otaku can be scary.

I've only heard two of Endou Aya's notable roles--Miyuki and Felicia. I honestly don't remember what I thought of Miyuki, but I was impressed with her Felicia. I guess she will be a seiyuu to keep an eye on in the future.

From the OP:
A while ago, in the seiyuu thread, I jokingly suggested using this neat little song to help familiarize yourself with Japanese voice actors. Well, that's what we're going to do in this thread. We're going to go, one by one, through the list of seiyuu in that song and look at and talk about what they've done. Yes, there are actually 151 of them. No, you won't know them all.

Because I am extremely lame, I romanized the the lyrics and put them in a song format. Might have some mistakes and transliteration errors.

A double feature tonight, for reasons that will become obvious.

3. Inoue Nana (井ノ上奈々)

?

She's been in very few shows and they're not notable ones either. There's not really much to discuss here. I'm guessing she got thrown in to rhyme with

4. Mizuki Nana (水樹奈々)

ImageImage

Now, Mizuki Nana is a powerhouse. Her first major role was in 2004 as Fate Testarossa, the stoic rival magical girl that served as the main antagonist in the first Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. With Nanoha, both her seiyuu and singing career really launched, with innocent starter, the Nanoha OP, being her first top 10 single.

With that, her singing and seiyuu career slowly expanded, getting some fairly major roles like Kirihara Misaki in Darker than BLACK, Hoshina Utau in Shugo Chara, Akashiya Moka in Rosario+Vampire, and Ogata Rina in White Album. Mizuki Nana's roles tend to be more of the soft-spoken but strong variety.

As for her singing, she's become one of Japan's most popular singers. Since innocent starter, her singles and albums have crept up the Oricon charts with each release. I remember last year when she made the news as the first seiyuu to have an album debut at number one on the weekly Oricon with her Ultimate Diamond album. She's one of the few J-Pop artists I still listen to.

Interestingly enough, she's the seiyuu that's most talked about on 2channel and has managed to retain that popularity without being incredibly divisive or attracting a disproportionate amount of crazies. She seems to be doing incredibly well, especially with the addition of the mainstream audience from her musical exploits.

Major roles in
Naruto as Hinata Hyuga
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha as Fate Testarossa
Darker than Black as Misaki Kirihara
Shugo Chara! as Utau Hoshina
Rosario + Vampire as Moka Akashiya
Hakushaku to Yōsei as Lydia Carlton
White Album as Rina Ogata
Rideback as Rin Ogata
HeartCatch PreCure! as Tsubomi Hanasaki / Cure Blossom

Hey I know this chick! I'm watching Heartcatch PreCure! She does a fantastic job as Tsubomi! I didn't know she did so much stuff though. Most of those are shows I'm not entirely familiar with (aside from Naruto of course). Still, if her work in Heartcatch is as good as her other stuff, I can see why she's popular.

I admire the excellent job she did with Kirihara. Darker than BLACK's dub was so excellent I was a bit skeptical about how the original would be, but the job she did was fantastic.

I guess I had more to comment on this time than last...

Yeah, who the heck is Inoue Nana?

Mizuki Nana is one classy lady. Lovely voice quality that just eludes too many of the generic female seiyuu. Also, can't forget her role as Nanami Madobe. I feel like that kind of character would normally be way too nasal and squeaky, but she did a great job at being cute and bubbly and not annoying.

Anyway yeah. Seiyuu have stalkers, but BEST is Japanese-illiterate Canadian guy who thinks he's married to Mizuki Nana and the Japanese government is keeping them apart www

That guy is pretty high up there on the crazy scale, probably rivalling some 2ch crazies. Luckily he'll probably never get anywhere near Japan. Unfortunately, he's only about seven hours away from me. ( ´A`)

Also, I agree with Japan's assessment that Ultimate Diamond is really good. It's between that and Great Activity for my favourite Nana Mizuki album. BUT, ETERNAL BLAZE will always be my favourite of her songs. It really gets the BURNING SPIRIT going.

The only role that Endou Aya that I have listen to was Sheryl Nome from Macross Frontier.

I felt like she played this part very well. She had the voice of someone who exudes confidence and pride, but also had a cocky arrogant, I'm a diva and I will do whatever I want too her as well.

But later in the series she showed more caring side, but still had a confidence and pride in her at the same time and got over her arrogant ways.

The DVD's might be hard to find... only the first two seasons are licensed and those both by Geneon... just before they went kaput.

If you do manage to find it somewhere, keep in mind (this is something I tell everyone about the show): First season = starts off VERY slow. It takes until about episode 7 to start showing why it's something special in the genre.

I think it was ich1990 who wanted voice samples:

Hirano Aya
Haruhi Suzumiya - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Endou Aya
Sheryl Nome - Macross Frontier
Sheryl Nome - Macross Frontier clip 2
The second clip is sort of spoilerish as it takes place very late in the series, but it's a good scene so I included it. Watch at your own risk.

Mizuki Nana
Fate Testarossa vs. Signum - Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's
Mostly fighting, but you get to hear Mizuki Nana talk in a few places.

I don't promise I'll do this in the future, but I might if it's easy enough to find voice clips on Youtube among loads of AMVs...

5. Sakamoto Maaya (坂本真綾)

ImageImage

Now here's a name that I'm pretty sure everyone here is familiar with. Much like Mizuki Nana, she's an incredibly popular singer in addition to being a popular seiyuu. I'd imagine even among people who prefer dubs, she's well known because of the glut of anison she's done.

She essentially got her singing and seiyuu start going with Escaflowne, performing both the OP, Yakusoku wa Iranai, and the main character, Hitomi. As someone who's more familiar with her later works and watching Escaflowne for the first time a few weeks ago, I was struck by how young she sounded in Escaflowne. And I guess from that you could extrapolate that she's kind of a big deal now.

As for her voice itself, I think that it has a fairly narrow range. What's surprising is how different she can make each of her characters sound with that range. For instance, Crona from Soul Eater is a very insecure, emotionally unstable character with low self-esteem, while Haruhi from Ouran is a very blunt and deadpan character. You even have her doing similar characters who still have minor differences in personality that you can tell from her voice. Mari from Eva 2.0 and Shiki from Kara no Kyoukai are both people who enjoy killing and combat, but one enjoys it like it's a game, full of excitement, while the other is near emotionless and much more subdued.

I mentioned that she's also done a ton of anison. In addition to Escaflowne, she's done songs for Cardcaptor Sakura, RahXephon, Wolf's Rain, Tsubasa Chronicle, Macross F, and Kobato. In fact, in May 2008, she became the first seiyuu to chart on the Oricon Top 10 for four consecutive weeks with Triangler (KIIIIIIIIIIIIIMI WA DARE TO KISU WO SURU), the first OP for Macross Frontier. It's interesting to note that she's worked with Yoko Kanno for the majority of her earlier musical releases.

So what's she been up to recently? Well, in the last year or two, she's had some anison pushed out with Triangler for Macross F and Magic Number for Kobato. Her major defining role of the last few years has been as Ryougi Shiki in Kara no Kyoukai. She's also landed a pretty major role as Mari Illustrious Makinami, the new character in Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0: YOU CAN (NOT) ADVANCE. And she's been showing up as leads in smaller shows like Arakawa Under the Bridge and The Tatami Galaxy.

Major Roles
Arakawa Under the Bridge - Nino
Kuroshitsuji - Ciel Phantomhive
Canaan - Alphard
Death Note - Kiyomi Takada
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny - Lunamaria Hawke
Ouran High School Host Club - Haruhi Fujioka
RahXephon - Reika Mishima
Soul Eater - Crona
The Vision of Escaflowne - Hitomi Kanzaki
The Tatami Galaxy - Akashi
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance - Mari Illustrious Makinami
Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners - Shiki Ryougi

I'm actually more familiar with her for her music than her voice roles...though with her, that's not surprising at all. I really love the opening theme she did for the Lodoss TV series, it was fantastic. Her work on the Escaflowne soundtrack was excellent too.

Her video game voice work is apparently pretty hefty too, though most of us wouldn't hear her from those I guess, since most games tend to be dubbed to English here. So her work as Aegis in Persona 3 and Aerith in the KH/FF games isn't too familiar.

However, I was shocked to see that there IS one video game role I've heard her in...that being Azel from Panzer Dragoon Saga. Of course most people wouldn't have heard that, with Saga being a fairly obscure game here, and it being on the Saturn to boot (which not many people owned). Still, it's pretty interesting...it was also another one of her younger roles, only a couple of years after Escaflowne.

Sakamoto Maaya is one of my fav Japaneses voice actress. Like Nate, I know more from her singing voice then her voice acting.

But when I heard her voice as Hitomi Kanzaki in Escaflowne and her singing voice as well, I was a big fan from that day.

Sakamoto Maaya is a big fan of Mari Iijima and why she push herself into singing and voice acting at a young age and was 16, when she did the role of Hitomi.

I just have to post those songs now as they were very good.
