Copyright?

Postby steenajack » Mon Aug 09, 2010 6:05 pm

Hello,

I'm looking into copyrighting my artwork, but I'm not sure where to start. I found a couple of sites, but does anyone have any recommendations on where to start and whatnot? Keep in mind that I do plan on joining deviantART.

Oh, and here are the sites I found that deal with this kind of thing. Has anyone used them? Do they look okay?

Any help would be great.

You don't really need to apply for copyright by the way. Simply creating an original work confers automatic copyright, and you can legally enforce your copyright without registering it. The reason for registering is to help provide evidence if you needed to take a case of infringement to court. It still wouldn't be necessary (so long as you could prove you created it) but the register provides a bit more legal weight. Another reason is so that for example, Disney animators can't claim copyright on the character designs they make, as legally the copyrights would belong to Disney rather than the creator. But I'm sure that doesn't apply in your case.

But yes, don't let anyone tell you that you are required to register for copyright or that you lose rights to it if you don't or something stupid like that. A creator of a work automatically obtains copyright upon creation, and requires no forms or fees.
