Broken Blade 1
I've been keeping my eye on this ever since I read a bit of the manga. A tad unoriginal, but well animated and the characters are interesting. There aren't very many other mecha series being released this year (the others being Gundam Unicorn and Bones' upcoming project), but I sort of get the feeling it's going to pass under people's radars possibly due to the movie/OVA format.

Claymore 4-8

Episode 8 was pretty much the biggest shock I've had watching anime in a while...I experienced an involuntary sharp intake of breath and everything. Whew. That kind of thing hasn't happened in a while. That episode definitely elevated Claymore out of the troposphere of 7/10-7.5/10 into the potentially 8/10 or 9/10 stratosphere.

Yeah, that part was pretty shocking wasn't it? I think I actually read that in the manga first, but I believe the anime pulled it off well.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei 3-5 -- I must say. I was rofling for the first two episodes, however the reliance on heavy fanservice is getting beyond a little grating. It still has its funny moments, however. I'll finish this season and probably end up finishing the series depending on if the fanservice gets worse or not. But I am disappointed...

Kaichou wa Maid-Sama! 18 -- not disappointing! *waves pompoms* As entertainingly and hilariously awesome and happying as always. :D

Break Blade was a mixed bag. On the one hand, I liked the concept, where the mecha are more Escaflowne-like in their operation or construction. Everything else is your standard fantasy kingdoms about to be pitted against each other in war and your handful of character archetypes. The production was alright, but since it's a movie/OVA, I'm going to compare it to Kara no Kyoukai and Gundam Unicorn, and unfortunately, Break Blade is not in the same league as those two. Given that the story is still ongoing, I think this is a case where the movie format was chosen because of the financial trends over adaptation considerations. I definitely feel like it's better suited to a TV series than a bunch of movies.

I watched episodes 12-24 of Claymore in the last week  Pretty cool! Though I've yawned quite a bit at how shonen it is, for an anime with hardly any male main characters. (And I just found out that Rigardo is voiced by Vic Mignogna  Now I have to check out the dub....) I like the effects and the ideas, but I think the whole anime would have been vastly improved if they'd just cut back on the blood-spraying and the unrealistic running (you know, where they don't even pump their arms? :eyeroll: ) I'm ready for the big Priscilla showdown for the last couple of episodes, woohoo!

And I watched an episode of Durarara, just to see what everyone was talking about. And...yeah. Confirmed that it's not a show for me. I got the feeling all the way through that I was supposed to either be riveted by it or be laughing my head off, and I was just...kind of neither :/

On episode 6 of Clannad After Story. LOVE! Can't. STOP. WATCHING!
I just got the first 5 episodes from the library from Yukikaze. Starting that tonight.
Then probably finishing, Gate Keepers and continuing with Clannad After Story.

Also watched Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood episode 1. We'll see how it goes.

I just remembered that I also ATTEMPTED to watch Twelve Kingdoms awhile ago. But the storyline really had me confused. So I stopped. I heard it's good though.

Le Portrait de Petit Cossette was on my list of things to check out because it's an earlier Shinbo work where he went crazy and whole hog with his style and also because it's pretty short. It was pretty enjoyable, especially if you are a fan of Shinbo's trademark style. And another huge plus is Yuki Kajiura doing the soundtrack. I'm really happy to watch an anime that I don't loathe with a soundtrack composed by her that isn't Kara no Kyoukai.

I recently got the Part 1 set of My Bride is a Mermaid (a.k.a. Seto no Hanayome) and I was not expecting very much from the English Dub so after watching the whole thing, I was pretty surprised by it; Especially with Todd Haberkorn, Cherami Leigh, and Christopher R. Sabat in the English Dub Cast. However, I'm rather disappointed with the voices for a couple of my fave characters, so I still prefer the original audio...so far; not every character of the show has been introduced yet so I'll have to wait for Part 2 when it comes out in September. Still, its a hilarious show.

Starting Kemono no Souja Erin. It's about a green-haired girl with empathetic powers that allow her to understand animals. It looks pretty so far. The art style kinda has a Studio Ghibli feel to it.

Claymore through episode 20

I find that as the show's universe expands and the cast grows larger, its quality and interest follow suit I'm at the point in the show where things begin to majorly diverge from the manga (which I have ordered), so I have lowered my expectations for the endgame. But who knows? I have enjoyed anime OC before.

Took advantage f having my laptop back to watch Occult Academy 3-4-.... And I don't know what to think of this show. It seems to be falling into the middle of the road for me, but there are some great moments in there, like
"What would happen if I hooked up with her? *click* *looks at pic* *leaves*".
That was a great scene. But I don't like the new character.

Seirei no Moribito 1- I really like how this one started- I can't wait to see more!

I've been half watching Shugo Chara with my sister, and we're at about episode 50 or 60... something ^^; All I can say about that is Ikuto <3 Kitty boy ftw ^_^

Naruto episode 173: YAY! We are making PROGRESS. And to everyone's shock, Sasuke actually made another appearance after disappearing for so long! I feel like the series is worthwhile again.
Honestly, the long filler episodes of cooking ninjas, curry of life, and girls dressed up as their brothers were driving me up the wall.
I would hate this series, but for some reason, I can't bring myself to that. I mean... it's practically my friend's favorite (or at least was), and it was my very first anime. I have mixed feelings towards it... I definately like some things, and dislike others.

Tetsujin 28-go 15-17.

:wow!: Aaaand, with episode 17 everything has changed. A major, major shake-up in the essential nature of the series has occurred here. I really liked the show before, but now I am totally compelled to find out just what the heck is going on. Anime has been surprising me lately.

Finished Claymore! Kind of a lackluster ending, but not horrible. I've heard the manga's better, so I'll have to check that out and compare.

And episode 17 of Kaitou Saint Tail

I finally finished Soul Eater. It was fun enough, but not something I loved. I’d heard a lot of bad things about the ending, so I was surprised when it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting.

Started Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and picked Sengoku Basara back up. I don’t remember why I dropped it in the first place, but I am really getting a kick out of it.

I also took advantage of Crunchyroll’s new offering and re-watched the first four episodes of Moribito. Okay, I admit I re-watched the third episode four times. =) I love the series.

For a change of pace, I started Honey and Clover, and...wow. I am surprised. This somehow really reminds me of my life. The characters act just like people I know (especially the eccentric ones), and the situations feel oddly familiar. I’m not a poor art school student, but whatever, poor music school student is close enough. =) I’m really, really enjoying this one.

Well, I've been enjoying it-- lots of interesting stuff starts to unfold later, but there is one really stupid episode involving bathingsuits that can't really be skipped over. The main villain is...very different from most main villains I've seen, so that's a point of interest.

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Christo ep. 6-24 (complete)

Man, this show was a roller coaster ride for me. The first few episodes convinced me I was absolutely going to enjoy it, then the next half dozen saw a gradual decline into annoyance. By episode 12 it picked up again and reached its peak at the end of episode 15 (very great scene). Then, a couple more good episodes until it closed awkwardly. Frankly I can't make up my mind as to whether I like it or not.

The Good

On the upside, it was a very good mystery story (if you hadn't read the book), and was packed full of mostly believable drama. I say mostly, because the show remained faithful to French excesses, and the emotion was way over top at times. Also, the Count himself was totally awesome, intelligent, and dangerous: the designer of many always-enjoyable Xanatos gambits. I loved the Japanese VA for him: Jouji Nakata is probably my favorite VA ever. He managed to pull off a Japanese person speaking French very well. The rest of the non-teen cast was generally well done as well. Not sympathetic, necessarily, but well done.

Character designs were quite admirable. There were even attractive looking females in it, which was something I didn't think possible in anime. Also on the upside was the art, which reminded me how flexible the genre really is. After watching dozens of shows that look the same (even if they do it well, like 5cm Per Second) this was a great relief. The ending song was well done. I liked how they managed to smoothly tie it in with whatever thematic content happened at the close of the episode.

The Bad

And then there are the downsides. Most obvious: the objectionably content. One of the characters put it best when he described the French nobility of the time. "Take away the pride, lust, and avarice and what is left? Nothing." That pretty much describes it. Be warned: sexual content and nudity play a significant role.

Content issues aside, there are other problems. For starters, the main character is a total imbecile for the first 3/4 of the show. When another jerk of a guy takes his girl from him, for instance, he just kind of shouts angrily for a little bit and then rolls over and leaves the planet to go on a vacation. His supposed love is left to languish behind and fend off the unwanted advances of the new guy. He does mature a little in the end, but even then he is pretty dim.

Also terrible was the opening song/title sequence, which features some of the worst singing I have heard in anime, ever. Talk about starting off on the wrong foot, seriously.

Another thing that perturbed me was the periodic use of CGI. This is especially egregious considering that the animated art is fantastic. Nowhere does this error show up more than the entirely CGI mecha fight. It is supposed to be a dramatic scene, and it still manages be so, but not by any merit of the CGI. It is way too foreign to the show's style and aesthetic, and way too poorly designed of a fight to really suit the show's purpose. It would have been way, way better if it had just been a regular swordfight. Even an animated mecha battle would have been better.

I have mentioned the art, and how good it is, but I am sad to say that normalizes later in the series. During the first episode or two, all of the patterns and brightness practically burn your eyes out. By the end, there are still patterns, but they are dim and dingy and hardly noticeable. I was sad to see them go. As for character designs, the dark side of the females looking like pretty females, is that the majority of the males look like pretty females as well.

Two spoiler related complaints:
The Count was released from his pact with Gankutsuou because Albert hugged him? How does that work at all? I mean, I could see it (maybe) if Mercedes hugged him, and he was able to forgive her. Then all of his hatred and longing for revenge would lose some of its grounding, but it was Albert. This confuses me.

Second, what happened with Eugenie and Albert? I am no shipper. Heck, I would rather Eugenie hook up with a lot smarter than Albert, but after all of the time and episodes that were spent carefully setting up their relationship, I think there at least should have been a small piece of the epilogue set aside to tell how it all worked out. Even Valentine and Maximilian had a long reunion. Why not Eugenie and Albert.

Also, why did it take Albert five years to get back together with Eugenie (assuming he ever did)? I mean, they were pretty serious at the airport. Is Albert just that much of a jerk, that he leaves his girlfriend stranded for half decade, arbitrarily?
Conclusion

I really, really wanted to like this show more than I did. When it was good, it was great. When it wasn't, it was pretty bad. It promised much.... yet it broke that promise as often than its characters broke their engagements. 3/5

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Complete- So what sets this show apart from any other shounen that features mecha, large battles, end-of-the-world scenarios, and love stories? As I once heard, "If you're gonna do Micheal Jackson, you DO Micheal Jackson!". And that holds very true for this anime- it DOES shounen, in every glourious way possible. Which is why my thoughts watching this follow this approximate timeline-

"Meh" - "Hey, this is kinda interesting" - "Woah, I didn't expect that to happen. What's next?" - "Hey, this is kinda good" - "Hey, this is really good" - "WOW THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST ANIME EVER!"

TTGL is not an anime to be watched, it is an anime to be experienced. I loved it.

Ever considered reading the manga? Supposedly, the movie left some things out, and I have heard it compared unfavorably to the manga by those who have read it. It's short, only three volumes. The whole thing is in one bound volume and you can get it for less than twenty bucks. Sounds like you should consider it. I have it on order myself.

Yeah, it's good, but honestly I think the movie got it pretty good. In some parts it got it better.
