Amen to that. That's something that annoys me with any work of fiction. (James Patterson needs to let Maximum Ride die. Not necessarily the character, but the series. Please. And why do we have a thousand versions of X-Men, Ironman, Batman, and all those other comic book stories/characters? JUST END THE STORY ALREADY!)

Another one of my pet peeves is when the main hero goes into a monologue, or when we have long conversations about what's right and wrong, during a fight scene!

If I normally watched anime on my own, it wouldn't be quite so bad, but I tend to have someone with me, and he or she always complains. Which makes it ten times worse. 'Cuase I always hear this big SIGH.

Regarding fanfics, I haven't found one that was good that didn't have content that made me stop reading. And I'm not a six-year-old, either.

I admit, it takes time, effort, and following up with other people, but they are out there. I found one for Naruto that I think exceeds anything that the author has put out (yes, I think it's better than cannon!). It does have inappropriate content, but man can that author write! Completely makes up for it.

I've never understood all the vicious hate for calling out attacks and so-called "monologuing". I think it's freaking awesome. All the time. In every instance. And no I am not being sarcastic.

It is true that I haven't delved into any fanfics, but I did see one made for a series I liked... or converted into the anime. I was so frustrated halfway through I couldn't stand it and it sealed my opinion as I observed that some writers just can't capture the character as the original writer intended. But I don't want to be going and sticking my foot in my mouth if any of you good people of CAA write fan fics. I'm just saying as a writer... LOL
But yeah, the no resolve series just mess everything up. I totally agree with FllMtl! A hero needs a beginning, a struggle, a development, and a resolve. If you carry him too far, then he/she stretches to tedium.
And, hey, I agree with ShiroiHikari here! LOL monologuing, although unreal and impractical, can reveal so much about a character. I mean, if there were no monologuing, it would be like watching a movie fight scene without any background music. LOL In real life there is no music, but it would be dull to watch a movie without such! LOL

XD

Honestly I can't say that I really have a pet peeve when watching anime; my reactions or reasons to watching it would not really be any different than watching cartoons from other countries...Since every anime can be unique and it can be difficult (for me at least) to categorize those perceivably unattractive qualities...sure there's bad lip syncing and actions that are hard to buy simply because its not animated smoothly enough, but you can honestly find that on any kind of cartoon if you look hard enough.

Shounen:

I do not want you to stop in the middle of the battle to tell about how you spent 10 years in the forest punching bears in the face to learn a super special ultra secret technique whose only weakness you will now explain in great detail to your worst enemy.

In reality, your attempt to save the world from someone older, wiser, more powerful, and more well-equipped using only idealism, sheer naivety, the power of friendship, and a huge sword should not work. And yet it does. Why?

Shoujo:

This may be your first day of high school, but it doesn't mean you need to get a boyfriend. What happened to self-sufficient females?

If you have the choice between a guy who is a complete gentleman with a stable job and a kind personality who genuinely cares for you and a brash, verbally, physically and/or sexually abusive guy who won't ever tell you he likes you because he thinks he's too cool, why do you always pick the latter?

Your skirt that goes 1 centimeter beyond your underwear is not cute, it's impractical and the fact that it never flies up defies the laws of physics.

Sorry, do I sound a little bitter? Having watched anime/read manga for quite a few years, I get fed up with some of the stereotypes.

YOU.

I blame YOU for the complete lack of bear-punching in anime! You are the cause! I will never forgive you for depriving me of people punching bears in the face. :l
In reality, your attempt to save the world from someone older, wiser, more powerful, and more well-equipped using only idealism, sheer naivety, the power of friendship, and a huge sword should not work. And yet it does. Why?

Because the power of friendship/love is stronger than anything else in the universe. *nods sagely*

But I thought usually the hero got rid of their idealism and naivety during the journey.
If you have the choice between a guy who is a complete gentleman with a stable job and a kind personality who genuinely cares for you and a brash, verbally, physically and/or sexually abusive guy who won't ever tell you he likes you because he thinks he's too cool, why do you always pick the latter?

Because the gentleman guy is boring! That other guy, he's exciting and adventurous!
Your skirt that goes 1 centimeter beyond your underwear is not cute, it's impractical and the fact that it never flies up defies the laws of physics.

I've often thought the exact same thing.

Actually I remember a thread like this a long time ago and I remember posting what irks me and I will post it again here.

I really dislike it when you have two dudes facing off with each other and they leap in the air and then they both land and nothing happens for a second and then the bad guy is all "ARGH!" and falls over. It's a cheap cop-out of a fight scene (unless it happens after a fight scene has already transpired, in which case, I am totally cool with it).

I want to generalize this to include all corner-cutting, budget-saving animation tricks, i.e. use of stock footage. For me, this issue is right up there with the "Gonzo formula": going into production with only 1/3 to half of a story planned plus an inevitable rushed ending. But yeah, why make an action/fighting show or even that sort of segment/episode if you are going to cut away from the actual action/fighting?

Ahhh...fanfictions. Yes, it is so hard to find any good ones. Another pet peeve: Yaoi pairings. Especially when there is no evidence or hint of any such in the actual story. I cannot find very many TRC fanfics without KuroxFai. I am sorry, but I like KuroxTomo and FaixChii thank you very much! And WataxDou???? EXCUSE ME?????? Why do people like pairing a guy with a guy, especially if the other one IRRITATES THEM??? And even worse.....Syaoran paired with anyone other than Sakura! My goodness, the story is OBVIOUS his heart belong to Sakura! That's what the whole story is about.....trying to save his childhood love! GAH! /end rant.

I totally get love-hate relationships. I had a one-sided love-hate feelings about a boy- there were aspects of his personality that I hated, like his arrogance, his penchant for teasing my brother to the point of tears, and his always getting out of trouble for stuff he did. But at the same time, I totally crushed on him because when he wasn't being a snarky jerk, he was genuinely funny, had his caring side (helped bandage the kids up when they got hurt), and was really cute to boot.

So I get them. Don't always like them, but get them.

I agree with ShiroiHikari here, I totally don't get love/hate relationships. All my relationships are, I either love you or I hate you. There really isn't a middle ground let alone a both! O.o I mean, really! how do you do that, that is like saying I'm going East/West.

Hopefully we're not going too far off topic with this. Anyway, like Atria was saying, there's usually someone in everyone's life who does things that you absolutely hate, but at the same time you love certain aspects of their personality. You don't hate them enough not to love them, but you don't love them enough to not hate them. Therefore it's a love/hate relationship.

But in anime, this is usually something that does nothing more than frustrate the viewers.

Right... I'll have a love/hate relationship when I can go east/west... or be all white and all black at the same time... without being grey... there is no such thing as grey... but with anime, I really don't know. That part of my character carries over thither as well. I really really love something or I really really hate it. And if there is something in an anime that annoys me but I love the anime, I will love the annoyance as part of the endearment to the anime! :D

ooh! Have another peeve- harem anime (and I mean the harem, ecchi-filled ones- I've seen harem like Kanon or Clannad, and totally adore those). And ones that go unresolved? GAH! No. That's just... no.

And even worse are ones where the sisters appear to be included in said harem. Gross!

Oh you reminded me of something Atria!

I hate it when an important plot point is covered up by something. The biggest example of this I can find (from a series I love, Saber Marionette J, even though I know probably no one here has watched it) is when Lime, Cherry, and Bloodberry tell Otaru that they want to know which one of them he will choose to be his wife. So Otaru says "Okay!" and as he says the name there's really loud explosions that cover up his answer so we can't hear it, and then they just smile and nod.

I know why they did it, so that every pairing can be canon and none of the fans get upset, but come on! Pick an answer and roll with it!

Also I only brought up the love/hate relationship so I could post this sound bite from the episode of Simpsons where Apu's wife has eight babies.

Yeah, yaoi fans (and their writing) drive me nuts. Just...why? And they're everywhere. And there are so many fanfics that are either yaoi or yuri. Why, why, why...

As for love/hate relationships, when they're in fiction they amuse me. I'd hate it in real-life, but when it's fictitious, the bickering can be so funny. (PuckxSabrina in the Sisters Grimm - a books series - is my favorite love/hate relationship ever. It's a riot.)

As for monolouguing, it would be cool if the moral or whatever was something not trivial. But so often what the hero launches into sermon about is relatively minor. Why must we spend five minutes on the importance of friends or believing in yourself? It's not that the moral is bad, I just don't want to listen to someone go on and on about it. They just seem to overdo it a lot. Maybe it's just the anime I'm able to watch...

The thing is, most of what bothers me in anime annoys me anywhere else. I'm not sure that any of my pet peeves are exclusively anime-related, or if they just show up more often in anime...

But seriously, I've been thinking about this a bit recently. I have ranted and raved in the past about how mad alternative yaoi pairings etc...in fanfiction make me. But really, when you think about it, fanfiction is, by its very nature, about things that didn't actually happen in canon - whether it's an alternate pairing that someone would like to see, or an event that would be impossible in the story they are placed in, or a crossover between it and another work. And sure, I'd like all good fanfiction to scratch my personal itches, but that's just not reasonable. The reason fanfiction exists is because people have such diverging tastes, and the fans of shows/books/series are so varied, that expecting all fanfiction authors to write only things that I think are appropriate is ludicrous.

So, I've just decided to stick to fanfiction sites where the authors label their works with which pairings they are including - if the fanfic is romantic at all - and what the content level will be, and then I know that if I come across a fanfic that has an Elricest pairing, or a mature sexual rating, for example...I should just not read it. *shrug* Keeps my blood pressure down. ]something[/I] about what's going on with them... And what ever happened to Monster? They released the first box set, but there's been nothing said about the next one. And Hulu's got dubbed episodes that number up to the 40's, so I know that they haven't stopped dubbing them. :(

Thank you Wyntre for being reasonable and saying what I wanted to say, except I would have been sarcastic and rude and condescending. I'm pretty bad about that.
Anime series that begin before their manga is finished, and then either have to have long segments of filler to buy time, or end way before closure can be achieved. (Rurouni Kenshin and Fruits Basket are two of my favorite anime, but I REALLY wish that their respective animating companies would have waited a year or two to make them so that they could have finished properly.)

But that isn't feasible, and this has been discussed quite a few times on here. Companies want to make an anime series while the manga is popular. This results in the anime running concurrently with the manga, because they know they'll get viewers. And since you can fit more into a 22 minute anime episode than you can in a 20 page manga chapter, the anime is going to catch up to the manga fast. Again, since the purpose of the anime is to draw in viewers of the already popular series, this leaves them with two choices:

1. Create filler episodes to buy time until more chapters of the manga can be produced...this is what Bleach and Naruto do. This is the easier of the two options; self-contained stories can usually be done pretty well (except when they turn out to contradict canon accidentally, like the Warship Island arc in One Piece did where Zoro said "Sure I can cut steel chains no problem!" but then later in the series facing off against Mr. 1, stated that his swords couldn't cut steel). Still, there's usually enough secondary/tertiary characters that can be played around with and have absolutely no bearing on the plot, like the filler episodes of Bleach that focus on that spirit hunter guy (forgot his name).

2. This is the harder option, the one that Full Metal Alchemist and Fruits Basket did, is to just say "Well okay now we're just going to ignore the manga and make up our own storyline." This has the added benefit of being something new and different from the manga storyline, instead of just seeing the same thing you read. The downside of course is that usually the anime storyline is horribly inferior.

Again, these are really the only two options...there is technically a third option which would be "End the anime completely and then make an entirely new series later." Naruto did this to an extent with Shippuden, but that's more or less an exception, and besides it's not like the Naruto manga was ending anytime soon. Because, as I said, companies want the anime to run at the same time as the manga. Is this a good plan? It has its ups and downs, but it's how they've done it and how they'll always do it.

And as far as I know Kenshin's ending was kind of because of this? They were trying to make filler to buy time for the manga to continue, but the filler was so bad that the ratings died and they just ended it...at least, that's my understanding of it (I could be wrong). Same thing with Naruto and the whole "filler hell" thing they had going on.

OHHHHH NUTS.

On f-net, they ask you to name your two main characters. Or so I thought.

There's this little pull-down menu with names for two characters in the series. Whatever series. In my case YYH.

DOES THAT MEAN PAIRINGS? Because if it does, I'm toast.

I don't write about Kurama and Hiei pairings! I write action/adventure stories that CONTAIN Kurama and Hiei, or Hiei and Kaitou Yuu, or Kuwabara...

Oh. Maaaan. :bang:

Does this mean those who would ordinarily read the stories won't?

How do I fix it?
