Yeah, that's the one. I think their hair is usually covering them though. And the other mermaids aren't on screen much.

Seen some of Earl and Fairy- I have to admit, I thought it was only slightly better than average. And I don't watch Tegami Bachi (awful CG monsters!) but I read the manga, and really enjoy that!

Hmmmm. Kakurenbo: Hide-and-Seek is one of my favorite outright horrors. Kids are led into a game searching for a little sister, odd things happen in town, evil demons are evil demons.... It's just scary, and while it may take some to get the ending, it's chilling when you do get it!

Real Drive- an above-average sci-fi about a girl who helps an elderly man, who happens to be one of the foremost 'divers' into the subconcious. Cool stuff happens, and there's an environmental message about the ocean. But it's far cooler than that.

Tantei Gakuen Q- a series about a boy who wants to be a detective, and ends up in one of the best detective school in the country. Mysteries ensue. One of my favorite shorter mystery series, since Detective Conan goes on... and on.... and on....

Oh heck; I'll just make a list. Pretty sure nobody else here has seen any of this stuff:...Mazinkaiser

Have it! In fact, just a couple of days ago I bought a replacement DVD of it because a friend borrowed my old one and never returned it. I thought it was pretty good; the first two episodes are kind of confusing if you havn't seen the old TV series, but the rest was pretty cool. I preffer Getter Robo though. But Boss is the best character by far!

And has anyone besides me watched the Japanese version of Sonic X?

Saw it, even the uncut version of season 3 that has never actually aired in Japan. The last 13 or so episodes I could only find raw though :(. Thought it was descent, but not great. The best arc was their adaption of Sonic Adventure 2.

Anyone here ever seen Jungle De Ikou or Colorful? Those don;t seem to be very well know. Jungle De Ikou is REALLY fanservicey, so thats definitly something to be catious of, but I also thought it was pretty funny and had an interesting story, and great animation. Colorful is just awful though. non-stop wall to wall fanservice with no plot whatsoever.

I saw an AMV for Jungle, and looked up info on it, but it didn't seem my style

An awful one I saw was Kemeko DX- a fightfully horrid anime about a boy who has a childhood friend, who turns out to ba an alien. Well, they made a promise in their childhood to marry, and when he's in highschool, she'sback- in an ugly, short armor suit, and apparently wants to get busy with him in that short, ugly armor suit. Other 'funny' hijinks ensue.

I've seen it. If I remember right, Mom got it at a garage sale, thinking it was the Disney version. She pulled it out to play for the first time when some cousins (and their mom) came over; I think she stopped it when she realized it wasn't the one she thought it was, before chests began to show up.

The anime version of The Little Mermaid is really good. True to the original story. I have it on VHS actually.

Oh no! We can't expose our kids to culture! Flee to the sugar-coated Disney version that rewrites the second half of the original story!

Now, if only we could find someone who'll do it without all the nekkedness! (but seriously, I read the original when I was thirteen, and it gave me a nightmare or two. I would only read my kids that story if I was punishing them for something, or really wanted to mess with their heads)

Okay I guess I'm the only one here who sees the original story as being a really touching and poignant love story, because rather than kill the man she loved, she gave up her own life instead.

But I suppose everyone here would rather see OOH SUPER EXCITING BATTLE AGAINST A GIANT OCTOPUS, OH NO WATCH OUT PRINCE ERIC STAB HER WITH THE TRIDENT THING, OH YEAH DEUS EX MACHINA TO GET HER VOICE BACK NOW HE KNOWS SHE'S A MERMAID, LET'S GET MARRIED WOOOOOOOOOO MARRIAGES BASED ON KNOWING EACH OTHER FOR TWO DAYS ALWAYS WORK OUT AWESOME.

I thought the Prince was a jerkface, and he deserved to get that knife in the back. The nightmares were more from what she went through because of her love (like the pain of stepping on a thousand knives? Yeah, I have a vivid imagination and have a tendency to step on sharp objects, sooo >.>")

I don't see how he was a jerk though, he didn't see the mermaid when he woke up, he saw the other chick. So it was natural that he thought she saved him. As far as he knew the mermaid was just some weird mute girl.
(like the pain of stepping on a thousand knives? Yeah, I have a vivid imagination and have a tendency to step on sharp objects, sooo >.>")

Yeah but he probably didn't know that she was in that much pain. I don't recall if she ever walked funny or anything so I mean...okay if she did he was sort of a jerk for not noticing but if she didn't then how was he supposed to know?

And once I stepped on a four-sided die. Lemme tell you those things are horribly painful.
No, I thought that kinda stupid, too.

Well so long as we're in agreement then. :3

Mazinkaiser is a really fun little OAV, isn't it? I haven't seen any of the other Mazingers yet but I was still able to enjoy it.

I loved Disney's Little Mermaid as a kid but it's nowhere near as good as the original story. Actually, I guess it was pretty alright until the second half. Then it was just like...what?

Man, now I wish that version of the Little Mermaid was on DVD. I do like the book version, but the Disney version has its merits (Ursula is still one of the best Disney villains ever, IMHO.)
Here's some more obscure anime I've seen that no one talks about here:
The Seikai Trilogy (aka Crest of the Stars/Banner of the Stars I and II)--basically Romeo and Juliet in space
Dominion Tank Police (ugh! Wish I hadn't)
Silent Mobius
Fairy Musketeers (basically a magical girl anime with characters from fairy tales. I've been watching it on Crunchy Roll. It's cute)

My experience with the 2 versions of The Little Mermaid was a curious case of reading the original first. It really broke me (I was 7, remember that), that I refused to see the Disney version because I thought that would follow the same tragic ending. I was never a fan of tragedy.

Not presently watching it, but it's a solid favorite of mine: Metal Angel Marie or Boku no Marie. It was a one-shot from ADV with three episodes and (I suspect) a series that was never extended beyond that in Japan. Pretty pervy, and probably not great for sexual content, but very sweet and romantic in a backwards sort of way.

One of those "Only in Japan" love stories where a hopless nerd falls in love with a popular girl, and knowing that he has no chance with her what-so-ever he creates an android replica to fill that void in his life instead. Real girl finds out about android and he has to backpedal and say "Oh yeah! This is my little sister. yeaaaah." which... Just makes the whole romancing her thing hard. Like. Impossible. So now he can't really end up with the girl of his dreams, or the replica of the girl of his dreams. Forunately the robot steps in and does a little matchmaking.

Like I said... It's pretty backwards, but very sweet. Only three episodes sadly.

Actually I can safely say I've seen Sayuki. Well okay, I saw one episode. I had heard about the premise of the series and thought it sounded cool, so I bought the first DVD and sat down to watch the first episode...and man it was boring. I could barely pay attention to it, it was so god-awfully boring. So yeah. I've seen the first episode at least but...eh.
Saikano

Pssh, watched it all. The animation style was kind of weird, what with them not having noses and all. It was an okay series I guess, I actually sorta liked it up until the ending, which I thought was pretty bleh.

Doing some rudimentary scouring around, I've noticed that I seem to have been the only one who's mentioned ef at all recently, so I'll throw that out there as a really good show that I liked (and that I almost forgot about!). I really liked the first season, ef - a tale of memories, and it remains one of my favourite shows. The second season, ef - a tale of melodies, wasn't as great, but I don't think it was awful or anything.

ef is essentially a collection of loosely related love stories, two per season. It's not same harem setup where you've got a bunch of girls and the main character guy. Rather, it focuses on four different respective guy and girl pairings and their stories. In the same way that Clannad's thing was family, identity is the big theme here.

It's one of the best looking shows that SHAFT has done (and consistently good looking too, which is an anomaly for them). It's got their trademark style and the especially heavy use of symbols really worked well with a more serious kind of show like this. There are some fairly impressive moments because of their style. Also, music by TENMON, who's most famous for the work he's done for some director by the name of Makoto Shinkai.

I actually watched the first episode of this one, because a friend of mine showed me the opening, which I thought was really cool. XD I haven't watched any more of it, because the first episode didn't really hook me that much, but I've at least seen part of it! XD

I've been thinking about picking this up. I've heard wonderful things about it :)

Ginban Kaleidescope- a love story about a girl and a ghost who's forced to share her body for 100 days before he can get into heaven. In the meanwhile they have to figure out how to live together, since he can see, feel, and taste everything she does, and she's trying to become a olympic gold medalist in skating. So tragic, and so beautiful!

I actually watched this just a couple of days ago, and thought it was really stupid until the last five minutes or so. Then I changed my mind completely!

ef-a tale of memories and Ginban Kaleidoscope have been on my plan to watch list for a while now, but I hadn't heard any strong endorsements for either. I guess I'll have to bump them up in priority.

Here's another title from Cadence:
Mahou Shoujo Tai Arusu
This is a series I never thought I would enjoy, but for some reason or another I gave it a chance and ended up loving it. It is about a young girl who is thrown into an alternate "magical world" of witches, warlocks, and wizards. Though it starts out a bit childish, the plot twists later in the story become quite intriguing, and in the end you are left with some nice themes to chew on. The visual style is very unique, and the episodes are only 9 minutes long, so if you're looking for something a bit different, I'd definitely recommend this one.
