Toei shopping 'Sailor Moon'

ICv2 wrote:Toei Animation is offering 200 episodes of the Sailor Moon Magical Girl anime at the MIPTV market that will be held next week in Cannes. MIPTV is a worldwide content market at which producers such as Toei offer their wares to representatives of TV networks and syndicators of electronic entertainment from more than 100 countries. In addition to the Sailor Moon episodes Toei is also offering the rights to the 243 episodes of the 1980s TV anime Dr. Slump, which is based on the manga series by Dragon Ball-creator Akira Toriyama.

The 200 episodes of Sailor Moon would presumably include all the Sailor Moon TV anime series including the original series (46 episodes), Sailor Moon R (43 episodes), Sailor Moon S (38 episodes), Sailor Moon Super S (39 episodes), and Sailor Moon Stars (34 episodes, the only episodes that have never been available in the U.S.).

So you're saying there's a chance it could get licensed again and given the proper treatment?

Toei, you dirty so-and-sos, I want Sailor Moon on DVD! Or better yet, on Blu-ray!

I have a bad feeling that some other countries will get Sailor Moon back on the airwaves, but we won't.

A chance to legally own the Sailor Stars episodes instead of my bootle...I mean, the episodes I have never seen before ever because bootleg fansubs are bad?

Oh to live the dream. Sadly I don't see it happening. Everything I've read said it's always been Toei that's denied America the rights to Sailor Stars, and unless they got a change of heart I don't think it'll be any different this time.

SWEET!!!! Thank you very much for the report, Colonel!

There is hope that an American Distribution Company might buy the rights!!!!

Few things to note before we all get too excited...

Don;t see any mention of this being subbed. Wouldn't at all be surprised if Toei was like "yeah we'll give you Sailor Moon episodes...raw!!!". And this probably just means Streaming. I'm not going to get excited unless there's at least a "download to own" option.

Okay, to clear this up. The only reason why I posted it was, it sounds like some what good news that maybe Toei is having a change of heart.

But knowing how Toei over the past few years and how they took away license deal from ADV years ago, when it was selling well as a sub only for them.

I'm not going to give my hopes up and Nate and Shiro have posted what I feel as well about the whole thing.

The thing that makes me wonder is, if Crunchyroll could go after it and it will be stream. So far as I know, Toei is still form what I know, jerks about not wanting to release anything in the US on DVD.

But just maybe Crunchyroll will see about picking it up. Right now Toei is only dealing with streaming in the US only, but just maybe if Crunchyroll was to get it, it may change Toei's tune a bit, but we will see what happens.

Why does Toei only stream? Is it because of the fact that most shows we got from them we chopped up?

I think they only stream because they care more about money than catering to fans.

If a fan wants to watch a streaming show multiple times, they have to go back and watch it on the website, meaning that they'll either be forced to continue paying the monthly subscription fee for the site, or they'll be subjected to constant advertisements while they watch. In contrast, once you buy an anime DVD, or download an episode to your computer, you own it, and can watch it as many times as you want without involving the parent company.

What about One Piece? That's a Toei property right? Also, DB/DBZ/GT are Toei shows and they still get released here. So it doesn't make sense that they took Sailor Moon away even in the midst of good sales. Bah.

Maybe Toei knows that most fans already have all of Sailor Moon on DVD.
They think it will not sell well to new watchers.

I don't have it on DVD. I couldn't afford the ADV boxsets. I would gladly buy it if they left it on the market long enough for me to save up for it. :|

If I had that kind of money, I'd buy it. I've always been curious to see what was edited out of it. Besides, I thought what I saw was good.
