What non-Gundam Giant Robot anime do you like best

Exactly as the title suggests. Here's what I like:
Dual Parallel Trouble Adventure: Basically Tenchi Muyo meets Eva. And it works.
Rahxephon: The Matrix with giant robots.
Gigantor: I think is the one that started it all
Voltron: GOtta go with the one that got me started!
Evangelion: I refrain from commenting
Gurren Laggann: Every time I thought "Oh they can't top the previous ep" They did. And special bonus--Starfire as Nia! (yes, I noticed)
Big O: Batman with a giant robot. And a Gainax Ending
Gadguard: Currently available on Crunchyroll. Check it out. Definitely not your typical giant robot anime.
Code Geass: Death Note and Gundam rolled into one. With Chess!

Not really, it just ended. There was plans for a 3rd season, but it didn't happen. I'm glad that you like the ending that they came up with, because that is why Big O is on my list as I was let down after the ending.

Eh, we were lucky to even get a second season, all things considered. Big O is on my list, but the king of all Giant Robot anime for me is Full Metal Panic.

My personal favorite would have to be Escaflowne. It was also my mech gateway anime. Heroic Age, Code Geass, Eureka Seven, and RahXephon I also enjoy a lot, too.

Heroic Age sorta counts, I dunno. Bellcross is more of a mythical monster instead of a giant robot. Hm.

This is my kind of thread!

First of all, GIANT ROBO GIANT ROBO GIANT ROBO. The best, most wonderful, most epic seven episodes you'll ever see.

Next, Voltes Fiiiiive. This is possibly one of the gutsiest kids' shows of all time, and if not all time, certainly its own time, which would be 1977-1978. It explores all kinds of things like racism, slavery, betrayal, loyalty, family. Also one of the very first anime to have a villain who was A) good-looking instead of ugly and gross B) more than just some random evil guy. Oh yeah, and there's a giant robot in it.

Next, Overman King Gainer. This is definitely not a show for everybody, but I had a really good time with it. Great characters, great action, interesting and unique mechanical designs.

Also, Space Runaway Ideon was very good. This is what Yoshiyuki Tomino did right after Mobile Suit Gundam, so it has a similar feel and tone, but the end...oh, the end. End of Evangelion owes a big debt to Ideon.

Other series I've enjoyed include Eureka Seven, GaoGaiGar, GoLion, and Mazinkaiser.

And would you believe that to this day I have still not finished the Evangelion TV series?

Most anime fans saw Robotech, before Macross. After all, it did help people learn about the Macross saga. Robotech was three animes edited together to make one big saga and Macross was one of those parts that too and edited for Robotech.

One reason why anime fans and mostly the ones that drew up watching Robotech is because they learn that it was three anime titles all edited into one. The three animes were Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA that became the edited Robotech saga and when you watch the three anime titles, you see how much they cut out and how much better they are.

But the big major reason why anime fans, like me have a dislike for Robotech is not the series itself, but the US company Harmony Gold USA that owns the rights to Robotech and the three anime titles for the US is they have a big strong hold on the rights and if any company that like to release the anime titles, they have to pay to get the rights from Harmony Gold USA and at this point, they will not let the newer Macross titles be release here. They also will not let any the Macross toys be release in the states, even with the cries from US Macross fans that want them.

For now, the only way to enjoy the newer Macross titles is get a R2 DVD and buy the dvd's from Japan as well as buying the toys from Japan and that is costly.

Does Super Robot Wars: Original Generation count? How 'bout SRW in general? They're basically mecha shows in strategy RPG form; bonus points for featuring characters and mecha from anime.

If not, I still have Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Big O, and now I've discovered Super Dimensional Fortress Macross on Hulu.

Like Fish and Annette, Giant Robo. Its the only opera I know of where singing is replaced for giant robots.

Even though I really haven't seen that much of it, Gurren Lagann deserves mention as well.

I'm still weeping at the fact that I don't have a chance to finish the rest of Daigard (?sp).

I'd like to add Godannar, if not for the fact that it has TONS of gratuitous fanservice (and some questionable relationships) that one has to ignore if one is to enjoy it.

And the Eldoran trilogy (Raijin-oh, Ganbaruger and Gosaurer). I have to add that one. Nothing beats the old-school charm of a bunch of (emotionally-stable) elementary school kids putting one over alien invaders.

Good thing you said "one of the very first"; because IIRC, the FIRST mecha anime to feature a (supposedly) good-looking guy as a villain was ironically, a Tomino creation, Raideen. This was later used in the Romantic Robot Trilogy(Combattler V, Voltes V and Daimos), since the guy that created the said trilogy directed the second half of Raideen.....: Why, oh WHY do I always have to go all Ms. Smarty-pants at any given moment?! I have to stop!! *:hits_self: again*

Ah, I knew there was another show that did it first, but I didn't know it was Reideen. I want to see that someday, and Daimos also. Didn't know Nagahama directed the second half of Reideen, either. You learn something new every day!

I don't think Magic Knight Rayearth should count because the giant robots in that series don't really show up until the last episode or so. Until then it's pretty much a straight fantasy/magical girl show.

I think to be a giant robot anime the robot has to more or less be central to the plot. In MKR the robots just kind of show up out of nowhere because the plot dictated it, and they're never really used before then. I mean otherwise Godzilla is a giant robot series because Mechagodzilla was in one movie.
