I use AVG (from grisoft.com) and Trendmicro's HouseCall antivirus (which is an online service).

Advice from avid PC gamer....

Personally, I don't use anti-virus software... A bunch of them... like Norton and Mcaffee suck up resource as much as XP in the background. Also, I'm not a fan of the software firewalls, either. In my opinion, the best protection is a stand-alone hardware firewall, like in the Net gear routers. A lot harder to hack or well less likely to be hacked. Also, a bit of caution is very helpful... such as not opening attachment in e-mail, clicking questionable links... etc. The basic, you know.

Like Ink, I use AVG... when I use one (I think my current version is out of date now).

I don't run it in the background... frankly it can make ya a bit lazy ("oh, my AV software will keep me safe"), and they all suck up resources, which on an old clunker like this one is something I can't spare.

Being smart can keep you alot safter than just relying on software (remember Ink's recent problem... wasn't caught by any of the AV software, as it's slipped by most of them for the others with a similar problem).

Voice of experience here. Do not install McAfee VirusScan on the same OS as Apache, or Apache will not start up -- even if you uninstall VirusScan. I had to eventually reinstall Windows. (Leave it to me to do things the hard way. )

After an odd run in with some trojan virus that somehow got onto my computer whilst I was browsing about Gaia Online, I tend to keep my anti-virues (Norton) on while browsing sites. @_@

I pretty much just use AVG since it's free and somewhat effective while not using up a whole bunch of storage space. I use to have Norton and well it worked fine but it utlized a lot activity and as a result frequently froze my old computer up.

I think one offers more features while the FE just scans and cleans viruses. Don't really remember for sure though.

I use Norton...It saved my new laptop the other day :D!! It stopped a virus :D!!! Also for spy-ware (i know this is a anti-virus topic), I use SpyBot. It's very effective. It found and deleted a trojan that my Norton didnt find. So paired up these two are kick butt :thumb:

Ever heard of a virus for Linux? Me neither. I don't bother, although our network does have a hardware firewall. And spyware, I don't need to worry about that either. On my vmware Windows box (which runs in Linux), however, it doesn't even have networking...no internet browsing, no downloading...just Macromedia.
I'm back to make a post or two every couple years...
