What anime are you watching?

I finished Basilisk. I love ninja and samurai shows. Very sad and bittersweet ending. Sometime, I will also see the live action movie.

Finished Kemono no Souja Erin. I really enjoyed it. Although well told the basic storyline didn't seem to be very original, usually I could see things coming 5-6 episodes in advance. What impressed me the most was how it was told. No magic abilities, prophecy fulfillment, super powers, etc, just allot of refreshing realism. The show is honest enough to show life as it really is: a mix of good and bad, chance and consequence. Given the pacing I think almost any detail would be a spoiler so I won't say much more. I will say this, the later episodes have allot of flashbacks and the pacing felt awkward when a couple major plot lines came together.

Kodocha episode 5. Somehow, I found myself really getting into this one. Maybe it was seeing more of Hayama's family and a greater depth to Sana. Or maybe I'm just getting settled into the way this crazy anime works.

And I also managed to watch Trigun episode 17 or something with my mom. After many months of not watching it in between....

I've been working on my backlog recently.

For whatever reason, I'd left the last third of Casshern Sins alone for about a year. It's a really good show (although it's pretty slow). Like I've said before, the art is fantastic. I've enjoyed Madhouse's productions best when they're more experimental, like in this show and Kaiba. The ending was pretty good, although there was some disjointedness in the last few episodes.

I didn't enjoy Ichigo Mashimaro as much as I'd expected. It's alright, but the characters' personalities weren't interesting enough for me and I found Miu annoying and loathsome.

Kamichu was fantastic and I like to call it Shinto Moyashimon. It's a cute and light version of those episodic shows where the characters run into youkai mixed in with a lot of school life stuff. My favourite episode was the one that focused on Miko and Shoukichi and I was kind of disappointed that we didn't get more episodes focusing on them.

So now, all that's left on my backlog is Pani Poni Dash, Detroit Metal City, and the Ichigo Mashimaro OVAs.

I am currently rewatching Serial Experiments Lain. I think that the last time I watched this, I was in High School, so all of the Godard references were lost on me at the time. I might actually like it more now.

Watched the first 6 episodes of Kanon tonight. I don't know why I didn't really get into it the first time I watched it - must just not have been in the right mood, I guess, since I only watched one episode - but I am very intrigued and looking forward to more. So far, it's very pretty, very mysterious, and I keep having to remind myself that the main character's name is Yuuichi, not Kyon. lol.

I started rewatching Earth Maiden Arjuna.

This could be one of the best shows ever if it wasn't so darn preachy. The animation and story pacing are amazing...But the preachy-ness kicks it down from amazing to just really good.

Just finished Kanon 2006. Wow. Very glad I gave this one a second chance! So beautiful! And pretty clean, too. Highly recommended. Now, I just have Clannad to go, and I'll have seen all of Kyo Ani's moe power trio. So, if Air is summer, Kanon is winter, and I believe that I heard somewhere Clannad is Autumn...are they planning a spring one, too?

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

This is one seriously, seriously, messed up anime.

My school's anime club marathon-ed it, and I ended up having to take quite a few bathroom breaks during the shows colorful portions. Very intriguing plot; I still have little idea what the heck is going on. I have yet to decide whether it is worth subjecting myself to Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai to find out the answers, though.

Since Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai consists of the final two Answer arcs and much more explanation of what's going on, there's far less of the brutality from the first season. I know that if you've only seen the first season, it'll be hard to believe, but the major themes of Higurashi are trusting in your friends and overcoming destiny. You can see hints of it in the final arc of the first season.

These particular shows are based on light novels by Key. There are a bunch more games that don't correspond to any seasons. Clannad doesn't really correspond to a season because it takes place over a much longer period of time (years) than either Air or Kanon. And, important things happen at all times of the year. The other games are Planetarian (post-apocalyptic), Little Busters!, Tomoyo After (alternate Clannad ending), and the upcoming one, titled Rewrite. So yeah, no real nice season correspondence beyond those two.

Thanks for the heads up. If the second series is tamer, perhaps I will give it a shot. It kills me to not know how things turn out.

I did notice the "trusting in your friends theme" but it, like most of the rest of the show, freaked me out. I mean, at some point it makes a lot more sense to just turn your friends in to the police than it does to trust them. Trust they did, however, which eventually led to "overcoming destiny", but not without a few deaths first.

Just finished the first season of Nodame Cantabile. As someone who has studied classical music and played several instruments, I was very impressed! Probably the first time I've ever watched an anime where it really looked like the characters were actually playing their instruments. The comedy and chemistry were also great, and I'm very much looking forward to Paris and the Finale anime for this show as well.

I've heard this compared to La Corda D'oro, and while I can see why...I don't really think there's much of a comparison, honestly. Don't get me wrong, I love La Corda...but it really doesn't come close to Nodame Cantabile. This one made me want to get serious about music again - something I haven't felt in a long time. Thumbs up!

So, Katanagatari has been pretty divisive. People either love it or think it's boring. I liked it and couldn't really find anything wrong with it. I mean, I can see how people might find that it's boring since it is very dialogue heavy, but you can tell that the writing is definitely Nisioisin's. Like Bakemonogatari, I found the writing entertaining, so I have no problems with it. I like the art style too, which is something else that is causing division of opinion.

20 episodes in... I think the writers are trying to kill my heart.

But in a good way! Like Kanon, Clannad can have me legitimately crying one minute and laughing out loud the next.
