Let's play Oregon Trail!

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

As I recall, no one in an Oregon Trail game ever took swimming lessons. I only once made it to Oregon with all 5 members still alive. It CAN be done, people!
BTW, Fish, I hope you're using the meager food setting. It'll make whatever supplies you still have last longer. There's also the "bare bones" option, but that'll really kill some people.
Too bad there was never a "lord of the flies" option where you could eat each other.

SolRonin losses his balance as he walks across the wagon to get some bacon. He falls into the vibrant blue waters, and in its weightless wonder remembers his days as a young boy, playing in the ponds with Jessica his childhood sweet heart. The dream flashes forward six years, both lovers in their late teens, tears running along both faces. "No trek or trail is far enough to keep me from you..." fumbling for words "I'll make it back to you, you just wait you hear.".

Fast as it came, the dream left his mind. He rose up, SolRonin was always noted for his height, the waters only managed to reach his waist while standing, chucking he began to make his way to the raft. Fish was standing in wait.

"Toss me a line, mate!" Sol said, still giggling. Fish didn't reply, his expression didn't change, the grip on the rifle stiffed. Sol stopped only two feet from the wagon ... "What? ... Whats wrong!?"

"Sol, that was a silly mistake you made, and in this part of our journey such silly mistakes can be chuckled at and look on upon with fond memories! But very soon this trail shall show its true face one of bitter cold! Hunger! Thievery! and in the most desperate times Heresy! And in times like those one cannot afford to repeat such silly mistakes..."

Journal entry: March 13, 1848

Nearly a whole week has passed since the loss of our companion, which has graciously passed safely and peacefully. We have arrived at the Big Blue River, which has left us a bit wary of floating the wagon. Thus we have agreed to ford the Big Blue, as it is a mere one third in length, and one half the depth of the Kansas River. Just the same, we have decided to wait until conditions are perfect before proceeding.

Our journey will continue on in safety, God willing.

Journal entry: March 16, 1848

We awoke to find Big Blue had receded nearly a whole foot. With hearts and heads full of optimism, we began our trudge through Big Blue. As we sloshed through the clear green waters, I felt a sudden peace, knowing that all would be preserved.

The moment proved to be fleeting, as I was soon overcome by horror. The barrel of ammunition, sold to us by Matt, sprung yet another new leak. As the bullets fell into the river, I cried out to Solid Ronin, "Look out! Don't step..." but I was too late.

The bullets had sunk down to the rock bed of the river. Solid Ronin suddenly fell into the four foot depths of Big Blue. All of us scrambled to help him, but alas, we were too quick. The sudden excitement spooked our "un-spookable" oxen, one of which broke free from it's restraints.

For a moment, we had hope. Solid Ronin had recovered himself, and was working to retrieve the great beast. It was not enough. The beast broke it's own leg on the rock bed, falling into the fourth foot depths and dragging our friend with it.

This is our second loss of life. We must press on, in honor of their bravery.

RIP Solid Ronin. His courage will not be forgotten.

So you started out with ten sets of clothes.

And you lost them all.

It is going to get cold up in those mountains.

Which really doesn't make a lot of sense, actually.

I mean, we must have been wearing at least some of them during the crossing, right? Did the currents just suck them off our bodies?

Image

A.K.A. First fort in the game, and the first place outside of Independence where you can actually buy goods. Like all the stuff we just lost.

Yes, we lost two wagon members before we even reached the first fort. I hate this game sometimes.

Image

If it isn't always something.

However...

Image

Banker from Boston.
> Carpenter from Ohio.
Farmer from Illinois.

Bring it game. I'll take whatever you can dish out.

Image

Suck it up, you're still alive.

And not waterlogged.

Image

Sure, I could use the occasional bleak reminder of the fragility of life lost senselessly.

Oh wait, two guys already died.

Image

He died as he lived, I'm sure.

Image

"Swordfish."

Image

For a fort it doesn't seem of any particular strategic value.

Image

And we're in the clear. The first chapter of our journey is finished.

Image

You know, I should probably take care of this clothing shortage. Problem.

Cognitive, you stay behind to watch the wagon.

RD, you stay inside the wagon.

The fact that Cogi gets typhoid, then you pass a grave site right after wards is a bit unsettling. But then again, after losing two members already, we should be ready for anything.

A carpenter was always one of the better jobs in OT, I recall. I think being a banker just gave you more money and being a farmer helped you when you finally got to Oregon.

Being a farmer was just asking for the game to make it hard on you. You had only $400 to spend, which you'd blow very easily at the general store. Which sucks because that's the only money you get in the game. That's why I never was a farmer.

Basically how it works out is banker is easy mode, carpenter is moderate difficulty, and farmer is hard. The banker, of course, allots you extra funds to start your trip with, but that's really just a question of how to stretch cash. Carpenters have less money (and farmers even less), but you can fix your wagon whenever it breaks down, which saves you a bundle. But then, the farmer receives the highest bonus multiplier, so you get what you pay for.

Though on one occasion of playing I did pick carpenter and didn't buy any spare parts. Consequentially, my wagon broke down not 18 miles outside Independence and the game told me I failed to fix it and would have to trade for a replacement. Which nobody offered, effectively stranding me right at the start of the game without actually killing me.

Sometimes the random number generator is a little too random for my tastes.

Journal Entry: March 19, 1848

Once again, our group is facing hardship. This instance is faced by none other than myself. I sweat out all that I drink, I run a strong fever, and face other problems of which it is not proper to speak.

All of this, despite the daily Health Pills sold to us by Matt.

Journal entry: March 24, 1848

We have finally arrived at Fort Kearney. We thank the good Lord or bringing us here. Fish has decided to go trade for some much needed goods. He has left me, despite my illness, to stand watch over the wagon. As I surveyed the area, I saw many other travelers here, of which most are full clothed, healthy, and full of energy.

There was, however, one other group I saw. When I last saw them at Matt's shop, they were enthusiastic; full of life and optimism. When I look upon them today, however, I see just how fortunate we are.

Praise the Lord for delivering us through these trials.

Will Cognitive survive?

Will they be able to cross the next river without someone dying or losing half their possessions?

Will they ever get more sets of clothing?!
