I'm sold.

On unrelated matters I'm finishing School Rumble manga. I'm surprised of how superior the anime is (even with the infamous omission of episodes 1-24 of the "third term".) More than half what makes the anime really funny are the clever directorial choices and penchant for parody. Even the few anime-only stories are quite good (with the possible exception of the cruise one which was quite trite.) I'd like to hear the opinions of those who actually read the manga first, though.

I actually rather like Endless Eight so far... It could use a little more creativity in the different renditions (it would have been cool if each was shot in a distinctly different cinematic style, for example), but it's cool to see how they change it a little each time, and how the actors change their delivery a bit.

When I finish, I actually think I might watch it again to see all the details. Maybe there's a way to watch all 8 at once!

Finished Endless Eight!

There were a lot of times that I thought "Hmm, if I were the director, I would have done it this way." I guess I'm not qualified to say that though. I would have liked to see some of the variations, like the SOS Dan not going to Obon or doing different jobs. Sugita could have varied his delivery a bit more, although maybe not as much as Ono and Hirano Aya sometimes did. I also would have liked to see Mikuru in more non-pink yukatas. Most of the swimsuits were really cute though! I want Haruhi's from Endless Eight 2...

My faves were 2, 4, and 7. 7's more playful tone was kind of cute, 4 had some cool cinematography in the revelation scene, and 2 because of overly-gratuitous Kyon's fanservice.

I agree, Yuki stated that there were a few iterations with different activities, they should have added more variety to the mix.

Anyway, watched eps 2-3 of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and ep 1 of Darker than Black. Sensei is still a bit too weird (and too hanged in nuances of the japanese language for my taste) but I'm giving it more time to grow on me. I expected a bit more from Darker than Black from what I had heard but after the first episode, it seems pretty standard futuristic anime fare: Cataclysmic and misterious event changes the world and gives a few humans powers, police force is righteous but too strict (except for laidback rookie), unlikely hero becomes some sort of masked vigilant, enter silent/emotionless girl, etc. Let's hope that it gets a bit more interesting than that.

I just started inflicting Death Note on a friend of mine, so I'll probably be watching a lot of that in the next few weeks.

I'm on episode 4 of Kemono no Souja (Erin). It's starting to grow on me. The art is unusual and the setting is a bit different from the average slice of life. There is the beginnings of a plot so I'll have to see what develops, maybe it's just building the context for her life.

Started watching Chrno Crusade.

Just recently finished Peach Girl. SO CUTE!!!! But what a rollercoaster of emotions, wow. I don't know if I can handle another shojo like that.

I loved watching Peach Girl! The entire time I was like, "WHEN will Sae get what's coming to her!". You're right though for a shojo-fest of anime you need to detox after watching. ^_^

Favorite Anime/Manga comedy yet. If you can, watch it dubbed, the jokes come out way better. Also, give it a four episode try out (which should take just as long as watching a single episode from most other series); the first two episodes are not representative of the amount of objectionable content in the rest of the series. For fans of Monty Python style humor.

Up to Ep 6 of Darker than Black. I have to confess that I sort of dislike the "2 episodes focusing in a new girl" scheme as it feels rather forced and detracting of good storytelling rather than adding. However the underlying, slowly unveiling plot and the strong recurrent characters are enough to keep me watching. If the remaining, loose ends of each mini-arc come together at the end in a meaningful way, then I'll have to wholeheartedly approve.

As with most original BONES productions, most of the first part of the show is for throwing you into a world that's already been built and exploring that world, while the last chunk is for explaining what's going on.

Completed Fantastic Children this morning.

A sci-fi epic masterpiece. 10/10. In addition to how great the journey/build-up is, this anime has something that much anime does not...a well-done ending! You (and the characters) get some CLOSURE. Nothing about it is rushed or out of step with the rest of the show.

If you like sci-fi, a good mystery, character-driven shows, and don't need a ninja kick every five minutes, you will really like Fantastic Children.

The ending of the second season is a little more Eva-esque, so your miloage may very if you watch the second season of DtB.

I'm still holding out for a third season though, so who knows what will happen?

In other news: just finished the second episode of Ergo Proxy. Very, very interesting so far. I love the Blade Runner/I Robot style world. Definitely got its hooks in me...just waiting for the metaphysics and psychology angles I've heard so much about.

The problem with the Fate/stay night anime is that it really is the first part of a larger story, and less than a third of it at that. And even in that context, Fate (which is what the anime covered) is the least popular portion of it. Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven's Feel make it much more clear that the story is about Shirou, not Saber, and each portion of the story represents different stages in his growth as a character.

Anyway, winter has started and I've started it off with So Ra No Wo To. The reaction to the character designs has generally been lol K-ON! and if you're willing to take as many liberties as possible in analyzing the characters, then yes, So Ra No Wo To is K-ON! in the same way that K-ON! is Lucky Star and Lucky Star is basically Azumanga Daioh. Basically, it's a really laboured comparison and it's stupid and the only reason it makes sense is if you're giving yourself an excuse to hate it just because.

I thought the production was pretty good. The characters do fit into the particular slice-of-life archetypes, but they're not carbon copy of characters we've seen before. The setup is reasonably interesting and I'm really looking forward to exploring more of the world that they've created. With the way things went, we're probably not going into comedy territory, but more drama or iyashikei/mono no aware.

Ah, thanks. I'm glad to know I won't be watching 50 episodes needlessly. Honestly, I put it on my to watch list months ago and completely forgot everything about it other than that I wanted to watch it. I haven't seen Eureka Seven (yet) but I take your point. Give it lots of time .

Working on finishing up Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles Season 2. I'd only watched until the Recort (Recolte, Recorte...whatever...) Library episodes before I actually got my boxset, since that's where the filler starts, and the Tokyo Revelations OVA takes over from there. Since I now have the whole season, though, I decided that I'd at least watch the filler eps once. I admit, I didn't believe everyone's moaning about how dismal they were...until I started watching. Dismal indeed. Now, I haven't seen all of them yet, so I could still be surprised, but what I have seen has been really weak. lol. Ah well, the eps that follow the manga still made the purchase worth it - I just would not have purchased the last few volumes individually.

And I'm up to episode 3 of Kodocha. I'm really starting to like this despite myself.

Oh, and I watched episode 22 of the original FMA, just because. Wow, I'd forgotten how jam-packed with emotion it was!

Over the last two days I've watched 3-9 of Ergo Proxy. ...Wow. Totally into it. I have read a few negative things about Vince's character. I actually find him pretty fascinating.

*Edit So's not to use up a new post...I've just finished Volume 4 (through episode 16) of EP. Apart from the awesome [spoiler]encounter with the mimicking proxy episode[/spoiler]it proved to be a really fun disc with [spoiler] the Nightmare Quiz Show and a day-in-the-life of Rei-I episode.[/spoiler] What an enjoyable change of pace. I'm ready for things to get back on track, however, and get the main plot rolling towards the finale.
