Feeling let down by mates

Postby DrNic » Sat Apr 24, 2004 4:49 pm

Me and a bunch of my mates went to a christian disco a few hours ago and I can honestly say that the music was...less than average. But anyway, some of my mates went up to dance to songs such as the Cha-cha Slide and YMCA even though they hated the songs and were just having a laugh. I didn't feel much like it seeing as I really don't like that music... at all.

Anyway, near the end the DJ suddenly plays 'Sleeping Awake' by POD and I imediatally jumped up and began headbanging (rock is my passion)

On the way home I was telling my dad how the music 'sucked' and there was only one good song. My loyal friends suddenly started telling him how embarrasing I was and how I shouldn't mosh because it looks stupid. I tryed telling them that they were doing the same thing with all the dance songs but pretty they much started telling me that I should have been dancing to the pop music and not moshing to the music I liked.

What was the point in telling you all that? Well its just that most of my friends either like pop music and dress in mainstream fasions or aren't really hardcore rock fans. Because I like different things to them (and everyone else) they always treat me like I'm inferior to them, sayin stuff like 'cut your long hair', '...just because you like crap music' or 'buy some better clothes'. They just think they're having a bit of a laugh.

I don't know if I'm just being paranoid but Im beginning to wish I had different friends, friends that were more like me. Or that my other friends would start treating me better. I dunno, what do you guys think? (thanx if you read all that :) )

I don't think there's anything bad about having friends who are different, but if they are treating you like crap it might be time to give them the boot.

You'll find that no matter who your friends are there are going to be differences that you have from one another. In fact, eventually you will find that no matter how much you think you know about a future mate (spouse) once you are married, you will find that there will be differences. Dress, length of hair, music preferences...these are relatively minor differences. I grew a beard recently. My wife doesn't like it, but I think it looks pretty good. How do we handle this difference. We tease and laugh about it. It seems your friends may be having a bit of fun with you. Show them you can laugh it off and don't be afraid to tease them a bit. You'll find that a smile and laughter will bridge more gaps than a frown and anger will. Let me assume that as this was a Christain disco that you are all believers. Remember your faith in Christ is the most important thing that you all have in common. And look at the friends that Jesus surrounded himself with (the disciples). Talk about a bunch of guys that didn't have much in common. Yet, because of their relationship with Jesus, they were able to work together overcoming those things that otherwise might have driven them apart.

If they are really hurting your feelings, I think that you should tell them to stop; or at least tone down the wisecracks. Otherwise, laughing it off is probably the best idea.

I do have one question: if these people are so different from you, how did you meet them in the first place? What do you have in common (other than Christianity)?

To be totally honest it was mainly what one of my mates was saying to me. The others didn't really say much. It just really bugs me sometimes...
Oh well, at least I'm gonna be able to let my hair down (no jokes please) when I go to Ozfest this year. Im really looking forward to that. I wont be the only one moshing fer once!

Off Topic: By the way, does anyone know if AFI are thinking of coming to England anytime in the not-too-distant future. Ive been checking their site every other day and so far... nothing. Shame really. They're my fave band. I even managed to get my dad into them , lol.

Hi DrNic. Have you tried talking to your friend about how much his comments hurt your feelings? He may not even realize it. He's probably not trying to hurt you, so if you talk to him about it he may tone down the teasing.
