The Jesse Tree

Talk about anything in here.

Postby Roy Mustang » Tue Nov 24, 2009 5:23 pm

Think of this way, how would you feel if someone made fun of a tradition that you hold dear?

I'm Catholic, but I don't follow this tradition, but I know people that hold it very dear to them and I feel that its very disrespectful to do that in a malicious intent.

No one had to post in it as it may not be a tradition that others understand. I do think that it will make others think before wanting to join the board, if they feel that a tradition they share may get a butt of a joke around here.

Not to long ago, some of you posted in that We need change, but its getting old with those threads. Since people will be good for a bit and then go back and start doing this again.

I think the previous posts could be taken as mean or offensive, but I think there was absolute no malicious intent in making a lot of image puns.

But perhaps to each his own.

As for the issue of posting relatively harmless images in a relatively harmless thread: how does that have anything to do with being a jerk? Who said the thread was even "derailed" in the first place? They didn't come in and post off-topic nonsense, so I fail to see how this was a derailing.

And some of you guys seriously need to develop thicker e-skin, because if you're asking someone to post a picture of Jesse in a thread, then you had to have known that the first thing that would come to a potential poster's mind would probably be John Stamos. Also, try visiting one of the other 100 million forums on the internet and gain a little perspective on just how nice it is here.

Furthermore, is it really necessary to start issuing strikes for such minor offenses (if they are that)? Sure, people do deserve some discipline now and then, but for this?

I don't know about anybody else around here, but Nate and Andrew are my friends and I'm tired of seeing them passive-aggressively singled out for supposedly doing such Bad Things™.

It becomes more and obvious to me every day that CAA is not cured of the ills that were spoken of in the past; in fact, I only see it getting worse. And that's why I decided not to take this to PM with anyone-- this involves far more than just two people.

From what I see in the first thread, I think it should have been clear that this thread was meant to be serious. He really wanted people to post the photos listed.

They might not have meant any ill-intent, but you still have to be careful with traditions. Some people won't care and some people will.

"Also, try visiting one of the other 100 million forums on the internet and gain a little perspective on just how nice it is here."

Also, as a Christian forum, we are not supposed to be comparing ourselves by the standards of other message boards. We are supposed to compare ourselves by the standard of Christ.

While I'd like to explain what went down in here, my timing is pretty terrible. I won't be free to adequately discuss it until nine, assuming the increasingly worsening condition of my Internet won't have barred me from CAA by then, also assuming the increasingly severe tone of this thread doesn't get it locked by then.

Unless, of course, some people aren't really interested in actually discussing this and just wants to lock it to move on, which is sort of irresponsible, but whatever.

In any case, please think of this post as an I.O.U. and don't lock the thread.

First off, hats off to the mods for the thoughtful approach they are taking in this matter. Thank you.

Perhaps it is just me, but reading the OP gave me no indication that the topic was to be something serious. Maybe this is because I am not familiar with this tradition, and don't hold any of my own traditions to necessarily sacred, but I didn't feel that the (now apparent) seriousness of the tradition was conveyed in the OP.

(I'd also like to note that those of us who are not directly involved should try to be responsible and not get this thread locked. It might be best if this could get resolved in the open.)

EDIT: So Fish made a note about not getting the thread locked before I did! Now I am posting to agree with him.

If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things."

Annette, I'm making this public because you made it public. I offered a chance to deal with this silently, but that chance is now gone. Here we go.

As far as I'm concerned, people think this forum, and others, are purely for screwing around in. No: that's what Goof Off is for. Certain members are popular because they show up in threads and, essentially, wreck them to the delight of others. I'm not naming names, but I think most people know whom I'm referring to.

When people do that in Goof Off, it's acceptable and even encouraged. This wasn't one of those threads; it was an honourable and serious post, and it and other General threads are going to be taken in that light from here on out. There is also a subtext here which I am not getting into, but has been reported by other users who have observed the phenomenon and reported it privately to the moderators concerning some targets in particular.

This is what happens now:

- This thread gets back on topic. I'm intentionally not locking it.

- Comments disagreeing with this decision posted publicly will cause that user to be banned, immediately, irrevocably. I didn't make this post for my health, and I'm really unhappy to be put in this position, but moderator actions will be honoured whether you agree with them or not. If you complain publicly about this, you will be purged, and I make such threats seriously. I don't care what people PM me, but in public, moderator actions are final.

This is the nuclear option. Don't make me exercise it.

Jesse Tree

This will help a bit and more of the meaning to the Jesse Tree.

Image

Picture was a little to big, so I had it in small size.

This would be December 4 Noah: Gen. 6:5-8, 13-22; 7:17, 23, 24; 8:1, 6-22 Symbols: ark, animals, dove, rainbow

So, just out of curiosity, for us uninformed non Catholic's, what's the deal with this Jesse Tree thing? I've never even heard of it before today, what is it's significance?

Oops, didn't notice Roy's link, sorry.

As a follow-up to the earlier note, in PM I've discussed the issue with others involved. The images earlier were not posted out of malicious intent, but it was agreed that this was not an appropriate thread for them given the importance of the tradition. As far as I'm concerned, the matter is closed to my satisfaction.

@Mr. Rogers: Jean-Jacques Rousseau's main message was that humans are naturally good, and that civilization is the source of evil. Not a particularly Biblical message, but it did give inspiration for the character of Danielle Rosseau on Lost.

Not sure if that picture quite represented Jean-Jaques Rousseau, however.

In any case, Rousseau was a pretty cool lad. If you're interested, Jim, look up Social Contract Theory.
