Well, she's the reason I actually knew what the word meant. Although that doesn't the rule out the possibility that she misunderstood why she had the streak, I suppose.

I think insanity and destroying the world for the heck of it are excellent reasons.

I'm not really a fan of magical transformation sequences, so I don't really watch magical girl series. I'm sometimes also disappointed with non-romance romance situations or romance situations where no real affection it shown, but this may be resolved if I actually watched more shoujo series. ]

Yay for Abridged! =D

Insanity and destruction are great reasons, but just overdone. I wish villains actually had personal depth to them, though. I think the tragedy in them is that they're so flat. Forgive me for my Blue Sub. 6 craze, but that's why I like Zorndyke. He had a realistic reason, and I felt some sympathy for him.

For some reason, Yugi from Tenshi in Tokyo (remember that?) came into my mind.

The antagonist motivates the protagonist, and also makes the story more interesting. The protagonist shouldn't have every drop of the writer's attention.

Nate wrote:Guys remember TV Tropes. Old ideas can be used to great effect sometimes. And sometimes, even purposely avoiding cliches can become a cliche itself.

Plus, Mary is right. If we avoid stereotypes, then the things we use to avoid the stereotypes will become stereotypes themselves.

Actually, isn't that what happened? Japan wanted to avoid the stereotype of big manly men saving the world, so they had girly girls saving the world. What did we end up with? The magical girl genre. In avoiding a stereotype, they created a new one.

I have a couple entries:

1. The inability of characters to fight back if they've been slapped or otherwise punched. I mean, I'm a peaceful person, but if someone hits me, even if it's a "snap out of it" kind of hit, I'm gonna hit back!

2. The mother who dies in childbirth. I mean, come on! Either Japan's prenatal/postnatal care system is shot to pieces, or the doctor is delivering these babies with rusty forceps.

3. The father and/or mother who is conviently on a business trip in America. Yeah...that's a good way to get him/her out of the house for a couple months to leave our main character unsupervised and untethered.

4. The train/fight/train/fight cycle. This annoys me the most. Main character is fighting a bad guy. He loses in the worst way. He goes off on a training quest with some master, learning a super-secret, hidden technique to make him stronger, he goes back, fights said bad guy, wins, then relaxes for an episode or two until it starts all over again. Oh, and you better not ask for any help whatsover from your unbruised friends gawking at you from the sidelines because this is a "fair fight" and honor must be secured. Oy.

Trust me, if I were one of those spectators, I wouldn't be gawking. I'd join in the fray.

1. Maybe not all people would hit back if hit? Everyone reacts differently.
2. Even with modern medicine it is still possible to die in childbirth.
3. I got nothing on this one.
4. They're called "fighting" series for a reason.

I fail to see how number 4 is any different from the Rocky movies. He fights Apollo Creed in the first movie after training, then in Rocky II he trains again for a rematch, then in Rocky III he trains with Apollo Creed to fight Clubber Lang, in Rocky IV he trains to fight Ivan Drago...

And those are some of the best movies ever made.

Find annoying and idiotic? Maybe not. I mean, I could just say that I find the big eyes idiotic- we need a change.

Much better.

Okay, that's a bit too far; the "big eyes" part is almost a fundamental quality of anime, pretty much. But I don't think what you and I find stupid needs to die. Some may like it, some may not. There will be some stereotypes that can be executed better like others said, and some stereotypes that might need a slight change instead of a better execution, but really- I've seen some perverted character types that DO make a character out of themselves. Just not all, and not too many.

I like the big eyes in anime. Eyes are the windows to the soul, after all.

"Big Eyes" is a cliché cliché. Where do you trace the line? Are the eyes in "Monster" really that big? I'd believe that bug's bunny eyes are much much bigger. Is Mike Wachowski the epitome of anime-ness? And so on.

I was of course, totally joking about the big eyes; It doesn't seem to matter so much whether the eyes are big or slanny. I actually like the big eyes when you can use them on the perfect character. I use them all the time.

I also noticed that the eyes on the poor little girls were still oversized.

Saying "fanservice" is a stereotype is like saying "horror" is a stereotype.

Stereotype: a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group: The cowboy and Indian are American stereotypes.

I can't stand it when almost all the main female characters are portrayed as a bunch of wimpy what-nots who can't do anything for themselves. You know what I mean. It seems so chauvenistic. (how do you spell that?)

Have you watched anime in the last 20 years?

Also Mary-Sues are the OVERPOWERED anime characters who do everything because they're God incarnate.

Might want to double-check your terms.

Yeah got my terms mixed up. :P

There are plenty of strong female characters in anime.

Rukia from Bleach
Haruhi Suzumiya
Tomoyo from Clannad
Revy from Black Lagoon.
