Gurren Lagann: Sub or Dub?

Postby Elycien » Sun Sep 06, 2009 3:31 pm

I'm thinking about watching it next with my grandparents and I'm wondering which version to show.

I only have watched the sub, which I enjoy quite a bit, while the dub clips I've seen seemed kind of lackluster to me. HOWEVER I know better than to judge on clips, particularly when I'm accustomed to the Japanese voices so much that anything else will probably sound off. After all, my response to FMA dub clips was "eh, okay" - and I ended up adoring it when I re-watched in English.

So~~ I am asking everyone else which their preferred version is. :3

and I'm sure I can ask this question without people sub/dub bashing, right? we're all mature enough here, riiiight?~ I just want to know which you personally prefer and why. :3 hopefully this sort of discussion isn't too ~*dangerous*~ xD

I'm afraid Kamina's English VA does not bring enough burning spirit to the table. That seems to be the only part that really sticks out to me. I hear English Leeron is fantastic, though.

Either is perfectly fine. I like the sub a little more because of Kamina's badass voice in Japanese but I think the dub helps bring out some of the other characters more than in Japanese.

Also, are your grandparents actually willing to read subs while watching this very animated anime? None of my parents or grandparents are willing to read anything, so I'd be a bit surprised. xD

The question is, have your grandparents sat down and watch anime sub or dub. It really doesn't matter which is better. Which versions have they watch before, if they have.

Really? English Leeron was going to be the one shining example of why to go with the Sub, for me.

So wait, I'll admit I haven't watched it in Japanese yet, but I thought Kyle Hebert did an amazing job as Kamina, especially in seven and eight.

Dub Kamina is pretty cool yeah, but compared to his sub counterpart, there's just no real competition.

Well, I haven't heard it myself, but that's what I've been hearing.

I do want to emphasize that Katsuyuki Konishi's Kamina was spectacular and very distinct, kind of like Hirano Aya's Haruhi, Fukuyama Jun's Lelouch, or anyone that Norio Wakamoto plays ever. It will be very, very difficult to even approach that kind of performance. While his English voice may have been objectively fine, it's clear that it doesn't match the greatness of the Japanese voice.

But all this is moot in your case, because Roy's advice is the one that makes the most sense.

I've only seen the Japanese dub, though of what I've sampled of the English dub it's pretty decent. General consensus seems to be that the English cast is mixed on talent, with some great casting and a some not so much. However, as reading subtitles detracts from Gurren Lagann's visual assault on the senses, I'd probably go for dubbed over subbed, unless you just cannot stand some of the English voice acting.

Your grandparents are willing to watch subbed anime? Wow they're awesome.

I've only watched the sub so I can't judge the dub.

I've only seen the subbed......but Kamina is amazing in Japanese. So amazing I would go ahead and go with subs. Also, Leeron in Japanese is awesome, just cause his voice actor plays Vash the Stampede as well :D

By myself, I tend to lean a bit toward the sub side, but for watching with other people - particularly people who aren't trained anime watchers - I'll pull out the dubs. Especially with older people who may not have the eyesight to read subs comfortably.

If it has Vic Mignonga in it, generally I'll watch the dub. It just depends on what kind of mood I'm in.
