So, tired old [CLASSIFIED INFORMATION] memes + Christian + anime = genuine entertainment? :P Ok let's give it a spin.

I resent the Death Note - Zodiac one as I hated to yawns the latter while loving the former.

Spoiler about both the anime and the manga's endings
It never really advances past them figuring out who the traitor is and killing Dung Beetle (in the anime, not the manga... Dung Beetle dies as a pilot in the manga.) They have a sort of happyish ending in the anime... sort of, but they never find the people responsible, and these fights keep happening, with kids that keep dying... There is a complete lack of hope in this series. And for what? Because there's just too many darned universes? I mean, come on... Too many universes is an excuse to abuse and kill children this way? I think the author (also wrote Naru Taru) just has something against kids and takes pleasure at seeing them go through trauma after trauma...
There's enough despair in my life, I don't need it in my entertainment.

EDIT: Oh, and it's Bokura no, despite what all the official listings say... I know the title doesn't have any spaces in Japanese, but that's because there ARE no spaces in Japanese. Boku = I or me for a young boy. Bokura = we. No is a possessive particle, and therefore a separate word. Bokura no means "ours" Gets on my nerves when I see people (and even official translators) put Bokurano... You don't say Hotaruno Haka or Higurashino naku koroni.

Your point is valid. I however have no issues with a sad ending in anything.
I loved Grave of the Fireflies and recently purchased it.

..anyhow we are getting off topic.

I didn't mind that Bokurano was basically just a tear down of the whole Little Kids Have A Giant Robot Friend genre, and a lot of the character development chapters were really well written (Yō]Entire universes are eradicated on a regular basis by cruel design of no particular god for the lulz, so there's nothing you can do but hope it isn't your turn. That was a load of crap.

Doesn't help my opinion of the series much that just about the only character who survives unharmed into the future is Chizu's teacher. That made me want shatter a stone statue with my fists.
Though granted, some people could just replace the third panel with another picture of Alan Moore.

I see your Bokurano and I raise a Saikano. Wait, should we start becoming wary of series ending in -ano?

Well, while I prefer bittersweet to sad, I also think Grave of the Fireflies stands on its own for a number of reasons:

The historical setting.
The fact it's basically a true story with the names changed, and one of the deaths purely metaphorical (because Seita is basically the author of the book)
As such, it was made as a catharsis for the Author, who felt guilty about said sad event. He wrote the book as an apology, and the end of the movie has
Seita and Setsuko together, overlooking modern Japan. This image alone is one of hope and peace, even though she was certainly dead by that point.
While it was certainly sad, I don't feel it was as despairing as Bokura no. There's a difference between sad and hopeless, though it may just come down to point of view.

For what it's worth, I own Grave of the Fireflies, too. It's the 4th anime purchase I made (first 3 being Final Fantasy Legend of the Crystals VHS, Nadesico tape 1 VHS, and a gift of the Blue Seed DVD set for a friend.)
