The Sky Crawlers: it's a metaphor for otaku. Pretty cool flight scenes though, except for the awkward flight-only engrish.

EDIT: I guess I should write more about this and Sword of the Stranger, since they're both pretty good and are both also known as those two anime films that lost to WALL-E at the Academy Awards.

The Sky Crawlers takes place in an alternate history where the main populace lives in relative peace, but there are genetically altered humans called Kildren. Kildren never age past adolescence and they're essentially made to fight in planes against each other in a neverending war for the peacetime societies' entertainment. The planes and flying are all done in CG, a lot like Last Exile, except better, because it's Production IG and not GONZO. The dogfights and air battles are excellent. The rest of the movie can get pretty philosophical; this is the GitS director, after all. The story is supposed to be some sort of metaphor for otaku and is representative of the repetitive nature of the modern anime market or something.

Sword of the Stranger takes place during the Sengoku period and is about this former samurai who ends up protecting this kid who's being hunted down to be used in the creation of an immortality elixir for the Ming Emperor. To make it a bit more interesting than evil guys trying to kill a kid, there's a bit of maneuvering between the two main factions, with the samurai and kid trying to avoid them both. The fight scenes in this movie are beautifully choreographed and are definitely the reason to watch this movie.

Ah right, I watched the first episode of Umi Monogatari, the first show of the summer season. It's about some mermaids and some darkness is going to be enveloping the earth or something. I expected it to be a bit more slice of life about mermaids since it's directed by the same director that did Aria. I'll probably see where this goes for a few more episodes. Also, this is show 1 of 6 this season that has Yui Horie in it.

I finished Darker than Black last night with episodes 19 through 25. I quite enjoyed it.
I was sad when Novermber 11 died, and Mao. I liked him.
Today I watched episodes 1 to 7 of my new FMA boxset. :)

(Kyaaa Darker than BLACK!)

Kuroshitsuji [complete]

I want those 8+ hours of my life back please.

It got repetitive and the symbolism was extremely weak. The conflict resolution was ineffective and the ending resolved little and was unsatisfying.

But I hear the anime is much better.

this anime is truly something else. I can't believe I never saw this back when it was on tv. Then again maybe I wouldn't have appreciated as much as I do now back then.

More summer season stuff.

Aoi Hana is drama and yuri. I've not seen Marimite or anything, but it seems to have fulfilled all of the stereotypes I associate with it that I got from Maria+Holic. The director did Honey and Clover, Kimikiss, and Nodame Cantabile and since it's drama, I have a feeling I'll get bored of it and drop it within an episode or two. I forgot to mention that Umineko was show 2 of 6 that had Yui Horie in it, and this makes show 3.

Taishou Yakyuu Musume is about girls trying to form a baseball team in 1920s Japan, coincidentally known as the Taishou era. It began with the main character singing about how great 1920s Tokyo is in a sort of musical number. It's amusing enough that I'm going to keep an eye on it.

The preview episode of Yokuwakaru Gendaimahou was streamed last week and takes place in the middle of the story, so nothing made sense. It doesn't seem like something I'd be watching, except that the premise is that modern magic is done through programming. That makes me happier than I should be, but it made me recall the first chapter of SICP, in which the author equates programming with sorcery. I'm probably going to endure through this just because of that. Otherwise, it seems pretty generic, with the main character being the girl who sucks at magic and all.

Finally, I watched the second episode of Umi Monogatari, where it is made clear that it is nothing like Aria and is actually mahou shoujo with mermaids. Dropped.

EDIT: And some older stuff.

Sengoku BASARA was pretty entertaining. It's a very liberal interpretation of the Sengoku period in Japan, what with generals flying around everywhere and blowing stuff up. Over-the-top and very hot-blooded, spawning many great inside jokes like Date Masamune's awesome engrish and his motorbike horse.

Also finally got around to watching the extra extra Clannad episodes that explored other routes (Kyou and Tomoyo). Both of them were pretty interesting in a sort of "what if" kind of way, but too short to develop anything substantial. People who are familiar with the games will be pleased with this sort of glimpse at what their favourite routes would have looked like if animated. On the other hand, they'll despair at the fact that the real routes likely will never be animated (although, I'd say that a Tomoyo After OVA is something that sounds plausible, since it got its own game).

Well spoken. Let me know how you like ep. 18, which is my top #1 anime episode among the thousands I've seen. :)

As for myself I finally finished s-CRY-ed. The end was cool but the epilogue kind of unsatisfactory. Good shonen overall. Also, got around watching Mamooru Oshii-sensei's Jin-Roh. I usually don't like political/militar intrigue but this one was masterfuly directed, using beautiful metaphores and excellent animation so it fared quite well in my book despite the slow pace. Oh, and Death Note ep 25. One word:

I recently finshed DBZ, starting at the Frieza Saga all the way until the end. That show is still awesome, besides the 5 minutes of screaming every episode, haha.
I then watched Dragonball GT, which was alright O.o...I really didn't like Baby though...I mean, his name is Baby for one XD And he's just like the past what..3 bad guys who can regenerate if even one cell survives? That was a little annoying that they used that trick again, but at least the Shadow Dragons were more unique and interesting :D

But as of right now, I just started Dragonball Kai :3

Finished off the last of the one-cour spring shows I was watching, Hatsukoi Limited. Super fanservice-y, it's a series of short stories about first love. I picked it up since everyone seemed to like it so much, but it was pretty mixed for me. I enjoyed the stories for characters that I liked and hated the ones for characters I thought were stupid. It averaged out over the course of the show. I think I probably would have enjoyed the manga more.

Just in case you didnt know: GT was not created by DBZ's author but by the production company in a shameless attempt to milk the franchise just a bit longer.

Anyway, I just saw two movies: Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence which was an awesome visual experience but the DVD seems to be scratched (though not in a visible way) and I could only get a butchered glimpse of the last half an hour, which does not really help an already contrived and complex story. Hope I can watch it in its enterity soon.

The other movie was Whisper of the Heart, one of the few Ghibly movies I hadn't seen (most likely because unconscious distrust at it not having been directed by either Miyasaki or Takahata). It was really good, but more importantly, inspiring. I would recommend this movie to every young person undecided and afraid about their future. I just wish it had an epilogue.

Haha, glad to see others liked it too. I am not actually such a big Yin fan, she doesn't do very much, although I liked her backstory episode. I really like Hei and how he "changes" almost completely when he "is" Li-kun.
