Comedy Central orders new Futurama episodes!

Postby Roy Mustang » Tue Jun 09, 2009 8:20 pm

Sci Fi Channel wrote:As rumored on Collider.com, Futurama will return to TV on Comedy Central six years after being axed by Fox, Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello reported.

A spokesperson for 20th Century Fox Television confirmed the pickup to Ausiello, who reported that the cable network has ordered 26 new episodes of Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's animated series, to begin airing in 2010.

WHAAAAAAAAT? Really? I loved watching Futurama when it came on AS(And still watch it on CC from time to time.). It's just hard to believe they ordered more episodes after such a long hiatus. I can't wait.

FINALLY !! ITS ABOUT TIME! I honestly really couldn't care less about family guy. I mean yes it hilarious but i like story lines to episodes not random momments filling 90% percent of episodes. Some futurama episodes are generally very moving. So hecks yes to the 10th power and thank you comedy central. Maybe Fry will finally get leela

@ Grubb-I thought that Fry already got Leela.

[spoiler] You know, in the last episode that was shown with that weird windinstrument and the robot devil? http://www.tv.com/Futurama/The+Devil%27s+Hands+Are+Idle+Playthings/episode/165490/summary.html [/spoiler]

I am so excited about this. The Futurama movies were really great, so I have no doubts that the quality will remain good.

Futurama voices to be recast?

Postby Roy Mustang » Fri Jul 24, 2009 12:43 pm

This maybe some bad news.

Sci Fi wire wrote:No one was more thrilled than us at the news that Comedy Central was resurrecting Futurama with an order of 26 new episodes, to begin airing in 2010.

But now comes news on Forces of Geek that 20th Century Fox Television, which produces the series, may be considering recasting the voice roles. Say it ain't so!

Here's what the site reported:

According to no less than cast members John DiMaggio [Bender], Phil LaMarr [Hermes] and Maurice LaMarche on their Facebook pages, a casting notice has gone out to replace actors DiMaggio, LaMarche, Billy West [Fry] and Katy Sagal [Leela].

Recast Fry and Leela?? And Bender??

It seems clear that Fox is trying to cut costs for the show by hiring lower-paid voice talent—either that or trying to get a leg up on salary negotiations by sending out recasting notices to scare the current talent into rolling over on pay.

But fans may recall that Fox TV tried to muscle the original Simpsons voice cast in a similar fashion. That didn't go so well, so here's hoping the original Futurama cast remains intact.

I don't support a recast. The voices of Fry, Leela, and Bender were all great. Im sorry, but going the cheap way is not always the right way. They might as well not even make the episodes.

I have a feeling that the creators wouldn't do a new season if the original cast didn't return. And yeah, considering the article said they already tried to do it with the Simpsons cast before, I don't see this going anywhere.

Don't you just love how in the US, voice actors are considered disposable?

Seriously, if they're going to recast all the main characters then they probably shouldn't do new episodes at all.

I really hope that they keep the old voice talent. Honestly, when you can do this:

Then you know that there's something really great and important about the voice actors.

In Hubert J. Farnsworth voice, Good news everyone!

Sci Fi Channel wrote:[Updated: The Hollywood Reporter says the deals for Katey Sagal, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, John DiMaggio and Billy West all closed with 20th TV on Friday. "We are thrilled to have our incredible cast back," Futurama creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen said in a statement. "The call has already gone out to the animators to put the mouths back on the characters."]

Good news, everyone!

Remember that report that Fox had sent out a casting call to replace the voice actors in the newly resurrected Futurama episodes that will air soon on Comedy Central?

Seems it was a bargaining ploy after all.

Futurama star Maurice LaMarche, who voices a number of roles on the show—I counted 126 of them on IMDB.com, including Kif Kroker—confirms that that the original cast will back when the show is resurrected in 2010.

"Officially, my deal is done," LaMarche said Friday in an exclusive interview with SCI FI Wire. "While I can't speak for the rest of the cast, I see no reason not to expect all the others will do the same by day's end."

LaMarche's comments confirm a report in the Toronto Star.

The newspaper reports that the entire voice cast has just signed a new contract with Fox after weeks of intense salary negotiations:

As late as last week, the network was threatening to replace the original voices of Matt Groening's cult-hit cartoon, to the point of actually announcing a casting call for voice actors to replace them.

The compromise agreement, with the studio paying more and the actors accepting less, comes after the announcement of a 26-episode pick-up here by Comedy Central.

"I am extremely grateful to all the fans of Futurama who signed petitions and sent e-mails, both to Fox to profess their dedication to the original cast, and to me, personally, to express their support," LaMarche said. "All the love has been great, and it has meant the world to me. I know how very fortunate I am to have found a career in this profession, and even more fortunate to be working with such incredibly talented people as Matt Groening and David X. Cohen. And I'm hugely grateful to 20th Century Fox TV and Comedy Central to be back working on the funniest and most original animated show in prime time! Futurama am the greetest! And me am returning for a not no good raisin!"

At this past week's Comic-Con in San Diego, the producers of the show said that they were trying to come to an agreement, despite reports that 20th Century Fox Television was considering recasting the voices when the show returns to Comedy Central next year.

In addition to his multitude of roles on Futurama, LaMarche voiced the Brain in Pinky and the Brain and numerous characters on King of the Hill, Johnny Bravo and, of course, The Simpsons.

I dunno about this. I mean, bringing back Family Guy after such a long hiatus was a mistake, most of the newer episodes aren't that good. I can't help but feel Futurama will suffer the same fate.

Of course, I guess it largely depends on the writers. Different voices can be forgiveable if the show itself is still entertaining. Here's hoping for the best.

Oh thank goodness! Yes, that is fantastic news.

@ Htom-Well, let's try to be positive about the new episodes of Futurama. Yes, they could do the same as Family Guy, but I don't think it will. So I hope they still focus on storylines(With some funny things here and there like Bender's sometimes crazy antics.) like they did in the episodes before.
