Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Gurren-hen: You can't watch this if you've never seen the TV series, even though it's a compressed version of the original.

The first episode was cut well, the part where they get Gurren and fight Viral is awkwardly cut. The part where they meet everyone is some sort of musical montage that doesn't really show anything and suddenly we have new characters. The attack on Dai-Ganzan and Nia's introduction is the same. Everything after, is different and I thought it was better than the corresponding episodes.

The movie ends with Simon defeating the four generals and doesn't cover fighting the Spiral King. I hear Lagann-hen will be out in theatres pretty soon.

Yes. Higurashi, the game, is split into eight arcs: four question arcs, and four corresponding answer arcs. The first season consists of the four question arcs and the first two answer arcs. The second season consists of an anime-only arc and the final two answer arcs.

Personally, I consider the two seasons to be along the same lines as the two seasons of Code Geass, Gundam 00, or ef. That is, two halves of one story, rather than a series and a sequel.

Negima Ala Alba: An OAD that covers the arc where Negi and everyone prepares to head to the country of magic. It starts with the last fight between Negi and Chao and ends with them flying to England. Basically, it confirmed my hunch that SHAFT needs to make a Negima anime based on the manga storyline. I'm pretty excited now for the next OAD, which covers the magic world arc.

Well I finished Gankutsuou.... Whenever they get to the last few episodes on a lot of these animes, the endings always seem extremely rushed compared to how thought out and developed the rest of the show is. This was really no exception. It was ok but they should have dumped the last episode and spread out episode 23 over two episodes or something.

Anyway, I still think this easily sits at least in my top 5 anime series of all time.

Have been going back and forth over whether or not I should watch Baccano and Monster. Have heard some disturbing things about the content in both of them - Baccano for violence, and Monster for nudity/sexual situations - but both story lines sound fascinating.

Both are awesome, but as you said have some bad content. Though in Monster it's mostly tastefully done there are one or two instances...And yes, Baccano is totally rad but has some over the top violence. I love both shows, but go with your conscience on this one.

They use a lot of interesting animation techniques as the series progresses, actually, and it seems to be tied into the mental state of the characters. Interesting series. I was a huge fan of the original Tetsuwan Birdy OVA, and although this is a different story, it's been a good one.

I'm pretty sure they are setting up for more. They were beginning to pull in the name of the chief bad guy of the original OVA, and I don't know if you realized, but the fight scene in the basement of the tower was a remake of a flashback scene that was in the original.

Speaking of unusual animation, I've been watching "Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto". They appear to have videotaped all of the backgrounds in RL, processed the colors and such to be animation-like, then did all the vehicles and people in animation. (I think there's some motion-capture involved, such as a guitar player who keeps showing up. Her hands and mouth move suspiciously like motion capture stuff you see in music videos.) It makes for a very surreal overall effect.

Yesterday I watched Phantom ~ RftP episode four and Ergo Proxy 1.. I just watched Gunslinger Girl 2 episode one. I have to say that I'm quite disappointed by the art in this season. It's no where near as realistic as the original show, which is one of the aspects that I really loved.. =/

So without having watched the original TV series, I decided to watch the Pani Poni Dash OVA that just came out. And well, I'm amazed at how close it was to what I was expecting. I guess I know how SHAFT rolls now.

And after listening to the Macross F Vocal Collection album for a few days made me want to actually watch the show, so I've ventured into that. I sort of put it off because I found the concept (MECHA BATTLE superimposed with SINGING POPSTAR) stupid and I didn't like the CG, but after actually starting it, those two nitpicks don't seem to have been particularly aggravating so far.

Yes. Although they rendered the name with an R and a B instead of L and V in the OVA's official English sub.

I've never seen the OVA, but I am somewhat curious about the differences between the two.

It's worth finding. There is a little unnecessary fanservice a couple times, but by and large it is a quality story with (for the time) excellent animation.

Tetsuwan Birdy is kind of an odd duck, because the mangaka started the series years ago, grew tired of it and toddled off to do Patlabor intead, then went off to do another long running series, then decided to come back to Birdy. Except, instead of picking up where he left off, he started over from scratch and wrote a new story, with a similar set-up but a whole new plot.

The OVA, done in the 90s, follows the 80s manga, which would look very old-fashioned today, but was good work for that era. Anime follows the first story arc fairly closely. The "Decode" series derives from the new series, but diverges from that story a lot, so there are essentially three different TBs. The character designs for Birdy, Tsutomu, Birdy's boss and Gomez (the tall blond guy with the mustache) are pretty much unchanged through the three versions. Everyone else changes.

Plowing through Buso Renkin - REALLY odd, all over the place series, especially when one compares it to Rurouni Kenshin. (They were written by the same mangaka.)There are so many things about it that are utterly ridiculous, and yet, I'm still interested enough to keep watching...

I guess that's just proof that if there is a character (or several) in a movie/series that I care about, I'll put up with an awful lot of absurdity to see what happens to them. Though I seriously doubt this is something I'll ever watch again.

Oh, and Mr. Hat'n'Clogs? Careful with DNAngel. It's like Pringles - once you pop, you can't stop! Seriously though, it's a great series.
