Shocked at the lack of any discussion on Blade of the Immortal

Postby Chapel » Fri Feb 20, 2004 12:22 pm

Han can no one have even brought up possibly one of the greatest manga novels of all time. Blade of the immortal is an amazing story about a wondering samurai who was in a way cursed with immortality by an old Christian woman, whom apparently has been alive a very long time. Anyway the art in this novel is unmatched by anything I've seen the only one who comes close is Akira. THe characters look so real and feel so real. THere is a bit of blood and cussing, but wow the imagery, the sword fighting, the swords. The whole think is what Kenshin wanted to be. Bad turned good to kill bad. Discuss.

I had a wallpaper on my desktop from Blade of the Immortal for a while, but that's about it. How many books is the series?

The series is really quite long, but the story never dulls. Ten graphic novels or more so far. I just had a thought, had anyone else realized that Christians in anime alwasy have like great amounts of strength and power. Wolfwood, the old lady in blade of the immortal, one of Kenshins advisaries, Helssing corperation and the Iscariot corperation both from Hellsing, Which hunter Robin, and theres probably more I just can't remember Jesus in super book. Just a thought.

Well, actually I'm a big fan of this series, despite the brutality. What drives me nuts is the fact that I can't really hate Anotsu. There's a big conflict between the traditional samurai ways and the Ittoryu ways. I can't make a decision yet coz I've seen both sides of the arguments (as to which is the right way) and I respect the good intentions and bad consequences behind each 'way'.

I like most of the characters, especially the female ones. The impression that I'm getting from this series is at those olden Japanese times, "there's no female rights" and "Everyone's gotta fight to survive." I like Hyakurin (her past was so sad) and Maki (she's so powerful but depressed). But they are very strong women.

Just a warning, it's not for kids and weak stomached. There's quite an amount of violence, gore, suicide, cold-blooded murder, depression, rape and sadism. But I still like it coz the author never portrayed these occurrences were good or glorified them.

Oh, I LOVE Blade of the Immortal. And, hey, I love Aonatsu. I feel sorry for him... his family honor thing... his childhood as portrayed in "Dreamsong".

Part of the reason why I love it... the art. It has a very fine-art style, not typical of manga. Some scenes are drawn very sketch, some very realistic. A lot of scenes are done in pencil, rather than ink. It's very nice, and gives the manga such a wonderful, real, and artistic feel.

Um... the lady who cursed Manji.. Yaobikuni, I think her name was... I don't think she was a Christian. Wasn't she a Tiebetan Bhuddist priestess?

Anyway... I also really like the whole portrayal of the violence in the manga. It's not shown as "good". The characters really struggle with the violence in thei world, and committing acts of it. I think Manji likes killing his enemies, but it is a huge emotional strain on Rin... though Rin feels like she has to because she needs to avenge her family.

My favorite character in the manga is Rin, possibly followed by Aonatsu.

I picked up a few issues when Dark Horse started publishing it. It is definiatly beautiful artwork and an interesting story line. Question are the graphic novels cut up by the artist to read left to right like the Dark Horse comics, or do they now retain the original orientation. For that matter, is Dark Horse still distributing them, or did someone else pick it up?

Ah, Blade of the Immortal is my all-time favorite manga series. Manji is such a great character, and I really love Rin!

Dark Horse is still the U.S. publisher. And the graphic novels read left to right, just like the individual issues.

It's shonen. . . . *begins convulsing madly as she flees thread*
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Mave Blade of the Immortal is so gorgeuos you will honestly overlook the blood n gore. THe Manga for Hellsing was interesting I own it I really like vampire things. However. Hellsing deals with a subject matter altogether different than that of Blade of the Immortal. Hellsing is just pure unbridalled distruction of demonic entities by different organzations. Blade of the Immortal is about a man seeking redemption in so many words. A man who killed so many people that he has now dedicated his life to killing only bad guys to make up for his past transgresstions. However he runs into the same problem Kenshin ran into who is bad. Mangi is immortal though so this adds another level of intensity. Basically it depends on what about the series you don't think you can stand. The art is unbelievable, However the manga deals with rape, murder, cussing, and many other things. Its twisted and I wouldn't recommend it for anyone under age, but if your up to it. Great plot, great art, and great characters. The fight scences are really good too.

Alot of manga and anime are violent just for the sake of being violent. The violence is extremely gratuitous, and there's no substance underneath.

Blade of the Immortal is violent at times, but the story has quite alot of substance and features wonderful, three-dimensional characters who you grow to really care about. So yes, there's violence, but there's also a good solid story with depth and heart as well.
