Dynamic Entry!

Postby Maokun » Tue Apr 21, 2009 6:43 pm

Howdy, kind lads and lasses. As per the prophecies foretold by the ancients, I have come. Now things will never be the same.

I bring with me tidings of good will and gifts of random data that may or may not provide useful insight into the mystery that is Maokun:

-He's an anime veteran. Which mostly means that he'll shake a walking stick in your general direction, ranting that none of your newfangled anime can possibly compare to classics like Seton no Banner, Arbegas and Heidi of the Alps. Then he'll sneak away to giddily follow the adventures of Naruto when no one is watching.

-He pretends to be a conosseisur of everything anime. He'll talk extensively about series and movies you haven't even heard about while scoffing at you for favoring mainstream series, then will end most sentences with "the manga was far superior, nevertheless". He'll also invariably call series by their japanese names and raise an eyebrow if you pronounce "anim-ay". In other words, he's a hipster poseur. Also, now he wishes he hadn't mentioned his abherrant fondness for Naruto in the previous point. Very smooth, Maokun.

-While he has a soft spot for japanese narrative, his true passion is storytelling as a whole. As long as it has a good setting, character depth and compelling storytelling, he'll be a sucker for it, no matter the media. Books, Comics, Videogames, Movies, Interpretative Dance, you name it. He can enter into full Suspension of Desbelief mode at will, in about 0.62 seconds. He also fancies to think of himself a bit of a storyteller. Fantastic worlds spins inside his head and now he's honing his writing skills to some day be able to give them shape into our world. Whether he'll succeed at it, the prophecies don't mention it.

-He's a Christian, loves God and the Bible but is in no very friendly terms with the Church and other christians, after many experiences too depressing or ridiculous to recall to memory. However, he loves to have his beliefs challenged by science and philosophy, though he still has to hear something that really shakes his conviction and he doubts there will ever be. Please feel encouraged to prove him wrong if you believe so, as he loves to argue, provided the argument is kept polite and respectful and hopefully intelligent. ("LOLOL!!1 u believe in b1g magical guy in sky ROFL ur stupid" theses shall be met with scorn and not dignified with an answer.)

-Seeing all his love for videogames, sci-fi and fantasy, he realizes he's a huge nerd but at least he tries to be cynical and/or hypocritical about it. However, he'd like to reassure you that he's not an extremely obese man complete with nachos breath and neckbeard, clad in a sailormoon outfit and stalking hacker skills. Really.

-He believes that third-person writing can grow old quick and that this introduction is already long enough, so further factoids will be provided probably later if there's demand for them.

Anything that can go 40+ volumes in English must have something worth reading in it. Anyways, welcome.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May He cause His face to shine upon you.
May He lift up His countenance and grant you peace.

Maokun: Ninjas or Pirates? (Vikings are not a valid answer, sorry)

EricTheFred: Vikings are always a valid answer.

Hmm, I see, no debate. Oh well, your loss, now you people shall miss the one and only Apologist Magnifico in gracious combat!

Also, how come that the board won't let me upload an animated .gif as my avatar? :stressed: I see Tsukuyomi has one, is this some sort of discrimination against us newbies? *shakes revolutionary fist* I refuse to use a non animated avatar in a board dedicated to japanese animation.

Ah, another fan of the old school! We need more of those around here. XD

You like Albegas/Arbegas huh? The only exposure I've had to it is the opening and closing songs. Fun stuff.

What other old series do you like? I'm a big fan of the original Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy; I just finished Densetsu Kyojin Ideon (or Space Runaway Ideon, whatever you want to call it XD) and I really enjoyed that. I'm working on watching Hyakujuu Ou Golion and that's pretty fun. Yeah...we're mostly a giant robot household, but I also have some of the World Masterpiece Theatre series sitting around. :]

Oh, by the way, we do welcome civil discussion about faith, but not "arguing" per se, heh. Definitely read the FAQ for more details.

Anyway, it's good to have you here.

Hey I like the classic anime too. I like Astroboy and I've been watching Galaxy Express 999 on crunchyroll.com

I have to admit that of all the old school anime I watched during my most tender years, the mecha genre was my least favourite. I could only really get into the afforementioned Arbegas and the mandatory MazingerZ. However I'm impressed that you know Arbegas, other mecha-fanatics I've talked with haven't even heard about it. I leant mostly to the heart-warming stories (read: life-scarring drama that was one of the main causes of me becoming an incurable and stupid romantic) like Heidi, 3000 leagues in search of mother, Honeybee Hutch, Seton no Banner, and the adaptations of Tom Sawyer and Edmondo de Amicis's Heart.

Ah, yes, Astro was magnificent. GE999 is cool, but somehow the character design of Matsumoto-sensei has never appealed to me, I cannot exactly tell why, which is a pity because he's a great storyteller. Captain Harlock was probably his most enjoyable work for me.

Excellent, I've been given offerings of pocky as foretold by the ancients. Everything is falling in place.

Haha, I really only know Albegas because of my husband, who knows at least something about practically every mecha show that ever came out of Japan. XD I haven't seen Mazinger Z yet because there aren't any good English subs available and I haven't been brave enough to try watching it with the unintelligible subs. My Japanese isn't that good yet...
