They basically stranded their cast in the original. Some information you might care about: apparently, Natsu no Arashi was done by the same mangaka as School Rumble, which I hear ended poorly. Also, Eden of the East is done by Honey and Clover's mangaka.
Finally, after reading more of peoples' impressions of Pandora Hearts, it seems like the general consensus is "I have no idea what it's about, but I'll give it a shot anyway."
