Cowboy Bebop live-action... with Keanu Reeves?!

TV, Movies, Sports...you can find it all in here.

[quote="Cognitive Gear (post: 1276347)"]I've heard this a lot recently, and I do understand the sentiment. After all, it seems like the remakes and adaptations rule.

But I do have to contest the idea, based on the evidences that have been set before me in my local theater:

Pixar's films, Lost in Translation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Children of Men, No Country for Old Men, There Will be Blood, The Assassination of Jesse James, etc.

There are a whole lot of movies that are quite "original". The problem is, a whole lot of the movies that deserve attention just simply do not receive it. Like it or not, movie making is a business, and it's much easier to make another Batman move which is a guaranteed success than to spend those same resources on something fresh and new.

If we are really honest, though, movies have been like this for far longer than we've been aware of it. Even Casablanca, frequently credited as one of the best of all time, was based on an unproduced play, Everybody Comes to Rick's.

As they say, 90%]

Yeah, even the movies you listed are mostly drawn from previously written source material. There Will Be Blood is based on Upton Sinclair's Oil! and No Country for Old Men and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford are both film translations of books. Hollywood's been playing this game for a while. I'd love to see more original content in film... more movies written for the sake of being movies, though I'm okay with book to film translations as long as they're well-done. It's a shame, even so.

Yeah. The key to creativity and "originality" in movies is not in the story, but rather in how the story is told. Which is why those movies, while not being original in plot, are heralded as being amongst the best of their medium.

Mina really hits the nail on the head, though. Singling movies out for being "unoriginal" is unfair, as if you really wanted to criticize them for it, you'd also have to criticize a large portion of humanity's art.

Ow! My brain! Don't ever do that to me again!

Cowboy Bebop would make a great movie, I think. It has everything you need for a great story period. The thing is, of course, the transition from small to big screen. Part of what made Bebop great was the pacing and cramming a whole series into roughly an hour and a half would require talented screen writers and I worry the project wouldn't get the high level handling it deserves.

No Keanu Reeves unless he plays Jet's ex-girlfriends loser boyfriend.

My reaction to hearing about a live action Bebop remake:
"Aww, not again. Bad idea!"

My reaction to the suggestion of Keanu playing Spike:
"Nooooooooo!"

I've never seen him play a role which suggests he could be right for the part...he's just not witty/suave enough. But generally I'm not enthusiastic about a remake in the first place. Why do we need one? The story's already been told and 90% of remakes fail to tell a better version. More often than not they tell it far worse. (And that is perhaps because 90% of remakes are made simply because they are viewed as 'guaranteed money'.)

I dunno, I think a live action Bebop movie could work if it told a separate--but still good--story. Not a retelling of Spike vs. Vicious or Vincent, but a new story altogether. Again, with the right cast and director, I could see it being pretty good. Unfortunately, while it's not like all of Keanu Reeves's roles are bad or poorly acted, I just don't see him fitting the role of Spike. XD But hey, I'm willing to be surprised. XD

By Jove, I think he's got it! His acting skills are great and I think he can pull off Spike's dry sense of humor and mannerisms. They just have to find the right guy to play off him as Jet.

I think that Keanu will either do it great or it will be an epic fail. I honestly think he could pull it off really well. The question is will he though?

It official, Neo is Spike.

Yeah, I actually don't think its that bad of a casting call, My only problem is well... His voice. Steve Blum really made that characters with just the sound of his voice as much as the acting itself.

But yeah, Not that bad.

Well I still have faith in it because Shinichiro Watanabe will be co-producing it and it's his baby, so I don't think that he'll let it get out of control.

You can keep your live-action sentais and dramas, folks. I'm holding out for the LA Hare Nochi Guu

I have no issue with a Keanu Reaves Spike Spiegel. I cringe, however, with what Hollywood may do to Faye Valentine.

Yeah, ditto. I saw that, and I felt REALLY relieved. I won't make expectations in either direction, but the "oh noes, teh Hollywood" feeling has been expelled.

So for, there hasn't been any news on casting at all for the movie. The rumor that Zac Efron playing Light Yagami from an article in Anime Insider Magazine who would be a look a like for the part and then it showed up on Wiki.

Since then, it was remove from Wiki, since the rumor was not true at all.

Meh... *raspberry* I still think Keanu is a crappy pick. I don't think he can act well and I don't think he can pull this off. Spike has more personality than Neo and Neo is the only type of character Keanu is capable of playing.

Personally, Spike's cockiness and look has always reminded me of Ben Affleck. I'm no Ben Affleck fan but I thought he would have been perfect in this role. Ben can also be quite dry and witty even if he does come off as a pompous windbag at times.

Unfortunately, though Affleck is a good actor and has some fight experience, he's built like a football player. He probably couldn't come anywhere close to Spikes build or look no matter what he did.
