Offline, single console, 4 player Co-op games?

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

Offline, single console, 4 player Co-op games?

Postby Cognitive Gear » Mon Nov 24, 2008 12:48 pm

Recently, myself and a few friends have made a habit of playing 4 player co-op games once a week.

So far, we've played through Hunter: The Reckoning, and Hunter: Redeemer. We are now looking for more 4 player co-operative games to play on a single console. We have access to all three of the latest systems, and all three of last generation's systems.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good games of this type? The only restriction is that it needs to be 4 players, offline, and on the same console. We are fairly open to any genre (except anything musical), though a good non-split screen hack n' slash is preferred.

Thanks!

We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things."

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles?

Kudos for playing co-op, I find it's an under-appreciated gem of the video game experience.

I think the following titles might be what you're looking for:

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (1 and 2)
X-Men Legends (1 and 2)
Justice League Heroes
Super Smash Bros Melee / Brawl

By the way, is Hunter: The Reckoning any good? I had it once but traded it in as I didn't really play it. However if you recommend it I might consider getting it again. Thanks.

The Tales games handily qualify if you're up for a longer RPG experience.

The Legend of Zelda Four Swords Adventures (this is the game for GC, not the FS game that came with Link to the Past GBA game) is awesome IMO. The thing is you need four GBAs as well but if you can get the four GBAs and the connectors, I'd say its well worth it and even though you are required to work together to work through puzzles and stuff, it can get quite competitive. Not to mention you can pull a few dirty tricks here and there to make your friend lose a heart or two :P

(I know many didn't care for this game but I suspect many of these didn't play with multiple players which GREATLY effects the enjoyability of the game. Playing alone the game is not much fun but its great with four players)

Then since you have the connectors, you can try Crystal Chronicles. Getting the GBAs and the Connectors for CC alone is NOT worth it but if you already have the GBAs, might as well give it a shot. It is a fun game but gets repetitive extremely fast. I did enjoy it none the less but meh... I'd really just play this game by myself to be honest. People just tend to get in the way otherwise.

Phantasy Star Online has a classic 4-Player Co-Op mode, so I strongly recommend it.

Unfortunately these are only two player games, not four.

I forgot about Four Swords Adventures though. It's short, but I highly recommend it.

That it is! That could be fun, I'm just uncertain of if we could all work together long enough to create a cohesive level. XD

Good suggestion, though. I had completely forgotten about that.

I think that most of us have already played through that at some point or another. Co-op is the greatest aspect of gaming, in my book.

I'll have to check out X-Men Legends and Justice League Heroes.

Hunter was fantastic, though I do tend to be very partial to hacking zombies into bits. It has a lot of problems, though. The camera is pretty bad, and the combat isn't anything really fresh. However, the first game required more communication and teamwork than any co-op game I've yet played. Add in a perfectly "B movie" storyline and you've got yourself a good time for 4 friends.

Just a word of warning, though: Everyone playing needs to be a decent gamer. This is one of those games were one bad player can really drag down the whole group. Especially during boss fights.

As much as I love the Tales series, the simple fact that it has a world map really prevents it from being a truly great co-op experience for us. :(

Sadly, we only have one GBA. If it ever gets remade on wii with DS capability, we'll be good to go, though.

Oh man, I played PSO to death about 3 years ago. I loved that game so much. I should see if the other guys would be wiling to give it a chance. That could be a lot of fun.

Thanks all!

Lets see here...I got to remember the many games I've played XD.

For now I'll suggest these for you:
Legend of Zelda Four Swords Adventures
Halo
Halo 2
Halo 3
Gears of War( I hears Gears of War 2 is way better)
Rainbow Six Vegas 2
Tales of Vesperia( still got to finish, haha)
Conflict Desert Storm
Conflict Desert Storm 2
Timesplitters 2
Timesplitters Future Perfect
Mario Kart Double Dash
Some of my favorite scriptures.

Psalm91
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

Hebrews 4-4
1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

James 4
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Revelation 22:14
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

Unfortunately, both the Halos and the Gears games are not coop fourplayer offline. I don't know about the rest, but those are not.

Mario Kart Double Dash IS four-player offline, and can technically be co-op. In the sense that one person on the kart is the driver and the other is the "gunner." But two people would still be against the other two. So I dunno if that would be good.

The 360 version of Left 4 Dead has split-screen co-op and is quite good.

As for 4 player hack and slash games, the only one I can think of that hasn't really been mentioned is Tales of Symphonia...however it's still geared more towards being a single player game then anything else in my opinion. Phantasy Star Online has very good split screen co-op that can actually be quite addicting...

And, as my friends and I learned last night, Left for Dead is only splitscreen coop for two people. The others have to be on a separate box... We were sad, but it's ok. We played halo.

Even the old NES gauntlet games supported 4-player play.

Nuh-uh. Coop isn't supported with more than 2 players unless you have multiple 360's.
