Shoujo Suggestions

Postby Kireihana » Sun Apr 04, 2004 6:45 pm

I've really only been reading shonen manga, and decided to get into shoujo. I'm already reading the Azumanga Daioh books, but that's a short series so I'm wondering what to read after that. These are what I'm considering:

Tokyo Mew Mew
Kare Kano
Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne
Fruits Basket

I've heard good things about all these titles. So does anyone has any suggestions/critiques/add-ons for this list? Which series should I buy next? Which is the best? Or suggest another series? :eh:

I have not read any of those titles, but the CLAMP titles Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Angelic Layer are all excellent. I would recommend them all, starting with Cardcaptor Sakura.

Azu Manga Daioh is great, isn't it? I'm looking forward to the release of the anime!

Yeah I love it! My favorite character is Tomo!

Yes, CCS is one I should probably read. I think I got a bad introduction to CardCaptor Sakura via the US anime dub "CardCaptors". And Tokyopop is just re-releasing that series in the "un-flopped" format, too! But now you've reminded me that I've got to save money for the Azumanga Daioh anime! Why are [anime] DVDs so expensive??

I like Rurouni kenshin...it's funny, interesting, and a change from the Anime (for me atleast).

Yes but I don't think RK is shoujo, lol...

Could someone tell me a little bit more about Kare Kano and Fruits Basket? I know Fruits Basket is about boys who turn into animals when they get hugged, but that's pretty much all I know, lol...

Get the ones by Yuu Watase. She's considered quite definitive in shoujo manga. But mind, hers are serious stuff involving very in-depth emotions (and sometimes rather adult situations, so you might want to exercise some discretion at times). It's not all fun-fun joyrides; it's mostly very angsty and very serious. But then hey, not all shoujo are supposed to be cute and funny and it would be nice to expand your horizons. ^^

I personally say Fruits Basket because one I love it and two its the only one I have of the four. I've never been good with "explaining" things and giving opinions and such so I don't know what much to tell you. In short, boys turning into animals when hugged - there doesn't need to be any more explinations ^^; Sorry, I know this wasn't much help at all if any.

I have a list of shoujo manga. *giggles* I like shonen manga, but shoujo is awesome.

Fruits Basket: Definite awesome. Great, exciting storyline.
Tokyo Mew Mew: Read all six that are out. Own all six, actually. They're greath too.
Fushigi Yugi: It's okay, but Miaka, the heroine, can get annoying.
Alice 19th: Great.
Card Captor Sakura: Too adorable for words.
Wish: I'm told it's a little controversial, but I liked it. (If you want the reason I've heard it's controversial, I wrote it out on the thread about the Wish manga by chibi-chan.)
Suki: brand new by CLAMP. It's great. (I actually reccommend all of CLAMP's stuff. They're great)

Ah, Fruits Basket. How shall I begin. I've only read the first two manga, but that's okay for an explaination. Wouldn't want to give away the whole storyline, now would we?

Tohru Honda is the "heroine" of this story. First thing you see of her is her living in a tent. She happens to see this house in the woods while she's walking to school. She goes to investigate and sees twelve little ornament decoration thingies painted like the Chinese zodiac. Shigure Sohma sees her, since it's his house and all. They talk. Minor flashback. Yuki Sohma offers to walk Tohru to school, since they go to the same school. Through weird twist of fate, Yuki and Shigure find out Tohru's living in a tent. They invite her to come live with them. After a little protesting she does. Kyo Sohma (he is a Sohma, right?) shows up. Let's just say chaos ensues. Kyo's the reason she finds out about their secret.

That's basically the first half of the first manga in a nutshell. Did that help at all?

The choice has been made. There's no looking back. I won't let up, back up, give up, or shut up. My focus clear. My path is straight. My God, reliable. I'm a disciple of Christ.

Gods plan is like the sun. its too big and bright to look at directly, and sometimes the rain clouds cover it, but sometimes the plan dapples through the clouds and we can see beautiful glimpses of what he has in store for us.

Yup, its Kyo Sohma. And you don't have to make it seem like its all his fault XP *huggles Kyo* Its not yo- ... :shady: fault.

I tend to be fairly shoojo in my tastes, and I definitely enjoy(ed) Furuba the anime -- and from what I've read of the manga, it's just as good. I'm still holding out for the second "season" books, though.

I'm rather leery of Kare Kano because of one major occurrence in the plot, in which
the two main characters sleep together out of wedlock
. I think what annoyed me more was that it seems to have been treated so casually. I don't know if this appears in the manga or not (this is just from what I know/have seen of the anime).

I guess I'll go ahead and add that I also enjoyed Fruits Basket very much. Definitely a good choice.

My top picks for shoujo manga:

I agree with Swordskill about Yu Watase. Right now, I'm enjoying her "Alice 19th." I've never read any others of hers because of the reasons Swordskill gave.

CLAMP is great for shoujo. I'm really getting into "Suki," right now. It's very cute. But, by far their best works are Magic Knight Rayearth and Cardcaptor Sakura.

Fruits Basket, I'm told is fantastic by my daughter. I haven't started reading it yet. I loved the anime, though.

Kodacha is fantastic!

Marmalade Boy, I just finished and it's made me want to look into buying the anime when it comes out soon.

She Got Game, is very good.

That's all I can think of for now.

YOU SEE

You see into the deepest part of me ---

beyond the fog I hide behind.

You cast your light upon the shadows

that stretch like cobwebs in my mind.

You ease the pain when I am hurting,

and morbid visions from my past

pierce into the realm of Reason

as though I danced on blades of glass.

You grant me strength when I have fallen

and, once again, I've lost my way.

You take my hand in Yours and lead me

into the promise of a brand new day.

You bring order to all my chaos,

yet set my well-laid plans awry.

You place me on a firm foundation ---

then give me wings so I can fly.

You sand away my roughened edges

and polish all the dullest parts

until I stand before Your presence...

a newly-sculpted work of art.

You see into the heart within me,

right through my motives and selfish will.

And yet, in spite of all You see

You say You love me even still.

Okay thanks for all your suggestions, guys! Fruits Basket sure got a lot of points, lol. Now that I've got some more ideas, I'll be able to find exactly what I want instead of picking through everything on the shelf (which annoys my mom to death)

Lol. Nowadays my mom makes me figure out what I want ahead of time, so we can rush in and rush out, which I think defeats the whole purpose of a bookstore... I might as well shop online.

Anyway, I think Marmalade Boy looks really interesting, but I can see where it might have some controversial stuff. It is clean, right?
