Bible: Where do I start?

Postby roadoffew » Sat Oct 18, 2008 10:19 pm

I'm a Christian who has "backslidin" and rarely prays or reads his bible.

I attempted to start tonight but as usual I just don't know where to start. Why is it so hard to decide where one should start.

Can you guys help me out?

Just like with all great things.. You should start at the beginning ^__^

Take it a little at a time :) Don't overwhelm yourself, because that will actually turn you away from it ^^

I felt like you did at first. The best thing to do is start at the beginning like Tsukuyomi said :) I found it easier than from starting in the middle with no clue as to what was going on

When I started again on the Bible, I forst read the entire NT , now am on the OT , the New international version, then onto the KJV.

Go with the book of John. Or more importantly let God guide you

Godspeed:)
Some of my favorite scriptures.

Psalm91
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

Hebrews 4-4
1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

James 4
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Revelation 22:14
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

I suggest starting with the Gospels. Don't start with the Old Testament. I tried to do that and I couldn't. Someone told me to start with the Gospels and first really understand who Jesus is. Then finish the New Testament and then work on the Old Testament.
That's what I did, but its really up to you. ^_^

Ditto on what Gabriel and sharien chan said. Start in the New Testament, because that's what tells us about Jesus and about our faith as Christians. And you really need to get a foundation for what you believe as a Christian and why you believe it, and the New Testament is where to start. If you try to start in the Old Testament, you're probably going to get bogged down pretty quickly... not to mention that it has a lot of laws and stuff that don't really apply to us as Christians today. I'd suggest starting with John, then going to Romans.

And I'm lifting you up in prayer, brother. Just know that even though you may feel like you let go of God, that doesn't mean He ever let go of you.
Theme Scripture: Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. (Galatians 5:1)

And a verse for all us single folks: Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? (1 Corinthians 9:5)
