Most underrated/unknown anime titles

I haven't seen it yet, but it's actually getting on my nerves because it's freaking EVERYWHERE!

I feel the same way about Lucky Star.

The other day, I dug up a bunch of old, obscure mecha series. I will now blather on about a couple of them-- briefly.

Ougon Senshi Gold Lightan looks ridiculous. Here, just look at it. The thing is a giant golden Zippo. Literally. A little boy finds a gold lighter which turns out to be Gold Lightan. I can't decide if that's incredibly awesome or incredibly lame.

Then there's Toushou Daimos, which got one of those US hackjobs in the 80s called Starbirds, but I've never seen it around and I don't think anyone else has either. It's part of a trilogy that also consists of Voltes V and Combattler V, which are equally obscure.

And that's all from me for now.

I remember that Lain seemed to be pretty popular back in the late 90s/early 2000s, but there probably aren't a lot of people nowadays that know about it.

Hey, I've seen Betterman. It's a very different kind of show. I'd call this one underrated.

Oh yeah, Haibane Renmei! I completely forgot that as an underrated title, but it really is! SUCH a good series, my third favorite!

ok, i'm glad that u mentioned Haibane Renmei because i was considering watching the show but i let someone else's opinion of the show keep me from watching it. i think i'll take some time and watch it real soon.

A Wind Called Amnesia was made in Dec of 1990 and was directed by Kazuo Yamazaki, which he and Mamoru Oshii directed Urusei Yatsura and then Yamazaki directed Maison Ikkoku.

Because that was a list of shows on Anime Unleashed. Now and Then has been on TV, but that was on Sci-fi's Ani-monday block. But yeah, I liked Now and Then. I'm definitely considering picking it up.

What I loved about it was that the characters all legitimately aged over the course of the show, even if they all should have started as college students based on the book. They do seem to make all the characters younger in those series than they were in the books they were based on.

Granted, there were some concepts I wasn't particularly happy about in the story... Moreso in the original book than in the anime version, in which the philosophies of the book aren't quite as clear. I still loved the story, though. I wonder if they'd ever do the sequel in anime form... Probably not...

BTW, I don't find Lain to be underrated or overrated... Just... Rated, I suppose. Also, many of the titles beind discussed here aren't so much underrated as they are obscure. Obscure != Underrated.

Monster for sure. I picked that one up and was absolutely blown away.

I can't recommend it for anyone under 16-17, though.

I need to read Monster someday. I'll add it to Da List, which is going to take me approximately 50 years to complete at this rate. @_@

I found another very obscure oldie that looks...interesting. It's called Saikyo Robo Daiohja. Basically, Prince Mito and his faithfuls Scade (Sukeedo) and Cox (Kaakusu) travel around the Eden 1 galaxy putting corrupt lords in their place with the giant sword-wielding combining robot, Daiohja. Sounds entertaining, but then again, I really like this old stuff. XD

I am hooked on the extremely campy opening song. Songs this catchy should be illegal. The ending song is also really nice. I found a video of both of them; check it out if you want.

Mahoraba. This was my first anime. Well, not counting Pokemon. It's so funny, and the story is so sweet, but I never see anything about it anywhere.

And I second Haibane Renmei. Or third, or fourth, or fifth, or whatever. I love that anime. I need to watch it again.

It's a weird little anime about this guy who wants to be a gym teacher in this school, which has a strict "No Male Teacher" rule because it's thought that only females are capable of loving their students. So what does the main character do? With the help of his landlady, he disguises himself as a woman and gets the job and oh, the havoc that ensues.

Kudos to Crispin Freeman for acting AND directing the english dub and doing a bang-up job with both.[/SIZE][/font][/color]

I actually saw Galaxy Express 999 waaay back when Sci-fi showed anime movies that were actually worth watching, instead of Psychic Wars, Vampire Wars and other movies.

Well, since the first two Harlock series (Space Pirate Captain Harlock and Endless Road SSX) were never properly licensed in the US, you should be able to get them fansubbed for free ^.^ And Yamato is different enough from its American Starblazers version that I think it's fine to download as well.
